About this listing

A beautifully designed timber house set in rolling English countryside with just the hoot of an owl and baa of a sheep for company. Long walks, country pubs, amazing views and total luxury. Beehive Cottage is designed by award winning Architects, it has an eclectic interior with timber exterior, polished concrete floors with underfloor heating and plywood stairs.

The space

Beehive Cottage is a very contemporary architect designed house, what makes it unique is that it is set in a very secluded spot in the middle of the countryside. It is a sustainable design with solar panels, heat pump and solar hot water.

There's an open plan kitchen/living space with woodburner on the ground floor with a shower room, and two double bedrooms at first floor with another shower room.

The two bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with super king (or twin) and kingsize Hypnos hotel beds, we use White Company Egyptian cotton linens, and soft fluffy cotton white towels. We also leave you 'Basic Earth' designer toiletries and hand wash/cream in both bathrooms.

The kitchen is well equipped with oven, hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. There is a Nespresso coffee machine and some capsules, tea, sugar, dishwasher tablets and essentials are included. There is a washer/dryer in a utility room upstairs.

We leave you a welcome hamper with Prosecco, nibbles, chocolate, bread, milk and butter.

Guest access

The house adjoins the main house but guests have their own front door, covered parking and orchard garden, totally separate to the main house. There is a field and brook and you are welcome to use it (subject to sheep and cows). A fantastic walk starts from the house and takes you up a hill to the beacon, then back around the fields to complete the loop.

Interaction with guests

We live in the main house with our labrador Ricky, but the two houses are self contained with their own gardens. We can recommend some great local pubs and restaurants, and some fantastic walks and beaches with cake and coffee at the end of them!

Other things to note

We can arrange the superking bed in bedroom 1 as a double or two twins.

Mark and Liam are great hosts and we enjoyed having chats with them. The house is beautifully decorated with a nice garden and views, and super comfortable beds! The welcome hamper was a great touch as well. The house is perfect for those who want to be in the country side but still have all mod cons. We loved every minute of our stay and would recommend the place to anybody.

We booked a week in Beehive Cottage hoping for a relaxing and recuperative stay in the heart of the English countryside and that’s exactly what we got and more. The location is ideal, if you want to get away from the world – a valley of narrow lanes flanked by hedgerows teeming with animal life and wild flowers, wooded hillsides and spectacular views. But it’s also ideal as a base for visiting the interesting and picturesque towns and villages of East Devon – Honiton, Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis, Bridport and the city of Exeter are all within an hour or two’s drive.  Though just staying put would have been enough to make it a great stay. The cottage is a beautiful and sensitively designed eco-friendly modern building that is a joy to live in, making the most of the bucolic surroundings while unobtrusively using state-of-the-art digital technology to enable the most demanding modern city-dweller to absolutely have their cake and eat it! Very important too with a teenager in tow. She loved the house, garden and the resident dog was a big hit. Mark and Neil are consumate hosts who really couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable, and their written notes and advice meant that no question you might have went unanswered. The orchard had two apple trees heavy with fruit which we were welcome to use. We made 'Brendan's Apple Cake' from a selection of recipes left in the cottage for guests. It was delicious. Don't forget to bring a cake tin with you if you enjoy baking. By the end of the week we were thoroughly de-stressed and already planning our next visit.

We had the pleasure of staying at Beehive Cottage for a full month and by the end of our stay it truly felt like home - we didn’t want to leave! Mark and Liam were the most wonderful hosts and went above and beyond to make our time both comfortable and memorable. They have thought of everything to make your stay a perfect experience with many luxury touches, along with a sophisticated eco design. We loved the bathroom with its big open shower, soft, fluffy white towels and the lovely smelling hand soaps, it felt like we were staying in a boutique hotel! We are normally dying to get back to our own bed after being away for so long, but we slept so well for the entirety of our stay. The beds are incredibly comfortable with the surrounds being so peaceful, that at night the only sound to be heard is of a distant owl, magical! The kitchen is fully equipped with high end appliances, which was great for us as we love to cook! We also got to spend many evenings barbecuing and sitting on the outside deck in complete peace and quiet of the countryside. On the cooler evenings Netflix was an added bonus. We really enjoyed being able to walk straight out of the cottage on one of the recommended loops and couldn’t get enough of the beautiful and expansive views of the countryside. It was also a highlight spotting deer grazing in the neighbouring fields. Staying at Beehive Cottage makes you feel like you are miles away from everything. It is incredibly peaceful being surrounded by nothing but beautiful scenery and nature. The big plus of this, however is that the cottage is conveniently only a 10 minute drive into Honiton town or 20 to Branscombe beach, our favourite spot, with wonderful cliff walks. It really is an ideal place to escape from everything, and a wonderful location to explore the picturesque towns, villages, national parks and the jurassic coast that make East Devon a magical experience. Mark and Liam’s ‘helpful hints’ booklet was a gem. We took much of their advice by eating at recommended restaurants/cafes, visiting particular places and exploring Dartmoor. They have great taste and knowledge of the local area. We are already planning our next trip and can’t wait to return to this little slice of green paradise!

This is a really well designed eco-house in a very special setting in country valley. It would be difficult to tire of the views from the house and the garden, and the house is a great space to spend time in. We ate breakfast and dinner outside on the deck watching and listening to wildlife. We did a couple of good walks based around the south west coast path and taking in Branscombe, Beer, Otterton and Budleigh Salterton, from walk books and maps provided by Mark and Liam. We also explored Seaton/Axmouth and Sidmouth in the local area - both worth a visit. All of these are close by. It is also really easy to get to Dartmoor and the South Hams, as well as to Exeter. Mark and Liam were excellent hosts and, like other reviewers, we really appreciated the welcome hamper. House and setting both exceeded expectations.

This is a really wonderful house - so beautiful inside and out, and comfortable as well. Mark and Liam left a lovely hamper and breakfast things, as well as a travel cot and high chair for our baby. Really this is a perfect place to stay, and the location is so beautiful. Our baby enjoyed looking at the nearby cows and the little stream in the garden. Wonderful, wonderful Airbnb experience.

Thank you so much Mark & Liam we loved our stay at Beehive Cottage and thought you were exceptional hosts. The attention to detail throughout made our stay feel like we were experiencing somewhere quite unique. We appreciated the contemporary décor, simple but sophisticated furniture, the excellent well-designed kitchen along with a spacious bathroom with fabulous walk-in shower. The beds were the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in away from home, with crisp white cotton bedding and romantic ambient lighting. Oh and the blissful views over the garden whilst we drank our morning tea. The dramatic countryside views from each window made the cottage feel quiet and a restful place to retreat, we felt very relaxed after our stay. We watched some great movies and played our ipad music through your sound system, which was a nice touch. We mustn’t forget the welcome basket of goodies and essentials in the fridge, you thought of everything really, we couldn’t fault a single thing apart from having to leave after only 4 days as we could of happily stayed all summer.
