This rustic cottage close to restaurants (15 mins. by car to Rhinebeck, Tivoli), parks (10 mins. to Wilcox Park, with swimming (during summer season), boating, playgrounds), spectacular hiking trails, arts/culture (Bard College/Fisher Center for the Arts 15 mins.) and the Hudson Valley's historic houses. Sports show and Antiques show (May), Dutchess County Fair (August), Sheep & Wool Festival (October)...Bring the kids! Some activities closed due to Covid-19.

The space
Set in the rolling hills of Dutchess County farm country, this 19th-century cottage offers beautiful views. Relax with your family/friends in the open kitchen-dining-living room on the 1st floor. In summer, BBQ outside on the (small) patio with table & chairs. The cottage is filled with funky antiques, and sheepskins from the farm next door. You might occasionally see and hear roosters and hens.... As for other sounds, you will be on a country road with some traffic. There is Wifi but no TV. A/C is in the living room, master bedroom and 2nd bedroom but not the 3rd bedroom. There is no central A/C.

Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire cottage, parking space and grounds up to the fences separating the cottage from the sheep farm next door. Please appreciate that the grounds of the farm, a working farm, are not available for strolling. But there are many walking/hiking spots nearby. Ask me for tips on where to go....

Other things to note
Summer months: A/C units are located in the living room, master bedroom and 2nd bedroom but not the small 3rd bedroom, which has fans. There is no central A/C. Fall/Winter months: the cottage is fully insulated and heated. Also, the farm next door is home to many animals: sheep, hens, geese, dogs and cats. These are fenced off from the cottage, but occasionally some chickens and a cat or two might roam near the cottage. However, no animals are allowed inside the cottage. Anyone with a cat allergy, please take note.

Location

Red Hook, New York, United States

This area is one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit in New York State. There are lots of historic houses to see, hikes to take, art museums to visit, and concerts and dance performances to enjoy. Just 10 or 15 minutes by car is historic Rhinebeck, which features the Aerodrome (aiplane museum and showplace, which is fun for kids and adults alike) and the Dutchess County Fair as well as interesting shops and dozens of restaurants, many of them farm-to-table. Also 10 to 15 minutes by car is Red Hook/Annandale on Hudson, home to Bard College and the Frank Gehry-designed Fischer Center for the Arts. The cottage is in farm country, teeming with local produce and farm stands.

I love it here in Dutchess County, my home for 20 years. Favorite things to do: hike, swim, cross-country ski, eat locally harvested food at one of many great restaurants, drive from one historic town to another, attend roots music and classical music concerts, and grow herbs and vegetables in our garden. This is a bucolic area, with many farms. Which brings me to my favorite classic book, The Omnivore's Dilemma. Enjoy your stay.
