Our house is next to 500 acres of parkland & less than ten minutes from downtown, VCU, Carytown, and the Fan. It's ideal if you're traveling with dogs, love the outdoors, want quick access to the city, or just want to hang out.

The space

Dog door leads to a large fenced yard with sun & shade.

Forest Hill Park (next door) connects directly to James River Park. The two parks have wild trails; paved paths around a lake; river access with rafting/tubing/sunbathing/rockhopping; birdwatching; playground.

House has fully equipped kitchen; sunroom with dvd projector for warmer weather; Netflix and wireless.

Within 3/4 mile is neighborhood cafe with good coffee, beer, pastries, and ice cream; several good restaurants; local foods market; drugstores. Within short drive are the city's best restaurants, Bowtie Cinema and Byrd Theater, and downtown cultural events. Summertime presents music festivals and more.

Guest access

Four bedroom house includes guest room in finished basement. Two upstairs bedrooms (used as offices) are not accessible to guests, but remainder of house is available. Upstairs bedroom is shown. Basement bedroom is quiet and private but no separate bathroom on that floor. Half bath on first floor and full bath on second. Living room has futon couch that folds out. Sun room is best used in spring and fall. Two zone air conditioning and two kinds of heat (radiator and heat pump).

No off street parking but plenty of parking directly in front of house (the exception is Saturday mornings in summer when the market is in full swing.)

We have a lock box with keys on the front porch railing.

Interaction with guests

We will be out of town when house is rented but are accessible by phone/email.

Gene & Gayla's lovely home was the perfect location for a reunion with friends. The setting is picturesque and the home is comfortable and inviting. The hosts pay attention to all of the details from a biscuit for your dog and chocolates for you! They were responsive to questions both before and during our stay. They allowed for flexibility with our check out time. Thank you Gene & Gayla!

Wonderful hosts and home, and the location was perfect for a quiet stay! We felt very welcomed and knew we chose the right place when there was water and a biscuit waiting for our pup. She loved the large fenced in backyard. Everything was just as described. Very clean! There was a welcome packet waiting with detailed instructions about the house and Gayle was always quick to respond both before and during our stay. This was our first Air BnB experience and we were very impressed!

Simple place that is in a safe, quiet neighborhood adjacent to 2 beautiful parks with multiple trails great for trail running and stimulating your dog's senses.

I loved staying at Gene and Gayla's house. I rated them high but I think airbnb's rating system is flawed and may incentivize unreasonable expectations. Despite the 5/5 star rating, the house is comfortable and pet friendly. We brought our two border collie mix dogs (one is more lab so he's a big guy). and the location was perfect. LOTS of walking/hiking trails (so bring good shoes.) and a decent park next door with a Sat. Farmer's market. Can't ask for more. I didn't realize until we had been there for a day already that they had a welcome packet for us and had really gone out of their way to welcome us into their home. I really appreciate our first AirBnB experience and will definitely be booking more in the future. Tks.

Location, location, location! We just loved the fact that Gene and Gayla's house was in the perfect location. Not only were we close to downtown, but we were right next door to an amazing park and never-ending hiking/ biking trails. My family took advantage of the adorable farmer's market right next door on Saturday morning and spent the afternoon enjoying the trails. It was the perfect location for everything we wanted to do while we were visiting Richmond. The house itself was also perfect for our needs. It was inviting and comfortable and offered various comfortable lounging spaces in the living room, kitchen, and the amazing sunroom. It really felt like a home away from home. We cannot thank Gene and Gayla enough for hosting us and we look forward to future stays on our next trip to the Richmond area. ~LM

I had a business meeting on Monday morning so my wife and I decided to come up and spend a weekend in Richmond. This home backed up to a wonderful public park and trail system. We woke up each morning to sunshine and birds singing. We brought along our dog and found that this home was perfect with a fenced in backyard, direct access to the park, etc. This is a lively neighborhood with outdoor enthusiasts and activities. A nice bonus was the proximity to a Farmer's Market on Saturday morning--literally only a two minute walk from the front door. Gene and Gayla were gracious and kept in touch just to make sure everything was going well – – which it did.

Gene teaches college, Gayla writes, and we play as a folk duo. We travel when we can get a sitter to stay with our two dogs.
