The space
Best of both worlds. Whether you're looking for an overnight stay or short break the cottage is in prime location for ramblers, caving enthusiasts and general lovers of the outdoors. Three miles from the historic town of Tredegar (the birthplace of the NHS), and within ten miles from both Cyfartha Retail Park and Festival Shopping outlets - there's also something for the serious bargain hunter. With travel time to Cardiff less than an hour, and 14 miles from the Abergavenny Food Festival - Quarryman's Cottage is ideal for an inexpensive stay for local shows and festivals.

Originally a stable, the cottage became home to fourteen members of a local quarry family. With no two cottages the same - it has a charm of its own.

Here on'll be assured of a peaceful stay. With excellent 4G coverage and in close proximity to the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone and Circuit of Wales Development.

Where you’ll be

Trefil, Wales, United Kingdom

We're the highest village in Wales...This is what Wikipedia says about us.

At 409 metres (1,342 ft) above sea level. Trefil is perhaps best known for its limestone quarries – The Trefil Tramroad and the Sirhowy Tramroad formerly linked the quarries with the heavily industrialised areas to the south, providing limestone for the furnaces. The former Brinore Tramroad connected the quarries at Trefil with the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at Talybont in the Usk Valley to the north.

Open moorland rises to east and west of the village, the slopes to the west being known as Trefil Ddu and those to the east as Trefil Las. The moorland of Mynydd Llangynidr to the east undulates considerably and contains a number of caves beneath its surface. Most famous amongst these is Chartist's Cave one mile to the northeast of the village

What's in a name..
The village name may derive from the terms 'tref' and 'mil' signifying the 'farm of the lesser celandine', a plant which might be expected to grow in the stream which flows through the place, the Nant Trefil.

Trefil Quarries and Trefil Ddu are noted birdwatching sites; this area is the last remaining site in Gwent where ring ouzel occurs regularly, and other species present include raven, wheatear, stonechat, whinchat, snipe and red grouse.

Arts and entertainment...
The BBC TV series Merlin filmed many episodes at Trefil quarry and the feature film Wrath of the Titans was filmed there in June 2011. Not forgetting, Terry Pratchett's - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Shwmae/Hello from Trefil! The cottage has been in my possession for eight years - from those earliest Sunday bike ride memories to finally fulfilling my childhood dream to have my own 'piece' of Trefil. Most of the renovation work has been done by 'yours truly', and with no two walls the same, has hopefully added an element of charm! I've tried to be conscientious in the use of furnishings, through up-cycling some items. It's early days for Chartist Cottage with plans for raised veg beds in the hope of offering fresh produce in the future. Interests: I'm Welsh speaking, with a huge love of music - the more eclectic the better, photography, climbing mountains (we have a few here in South Wales) and experimenting with hot glass fusion. With the day job working in sustainability my ultimate ambition would be to take Chartist Cottage 'off grid' - I also make a mean chocolate brownie - Look forward to welcoming you!
