*Please read our whole listing! This place has a few quirks.*
Our cottage is darling—recently re-done, with gorgeous floors and bright skylights. It sits in our back garden, complete with pear, apple and plum trees. It's a 5 min drive (15 min walk) to downtown San Rafael and Hwy 101, where you can get into San Francisco in under 30 minutes. This is a great home base if you want to experience everything NorCal has to offer—from cycling trails to vineyards to beaches.
This little unit is magic. The photos really don't do it justice. Everything is brand new—the floors, the fresh paint—and it's truly stunning. The light pours in from the main skylights, and you can open the door and let the fresh air in. The garden is our pride and joy and we're constantly out there enjoying the trees, the birds, and the sounds of the creek. It's a super quiet neighborhood, perfect for writers, students, grannies, commuters... Really, I wish we lived there.
This is, however, our home. We're on the property often. We will give you tons of privacy, and there are blinds on all the windows. But I (Marian) work from home so you will see me (and the dog) out and about. Come May, there will also be an infant on the property. You'll be far enough away that you won't hear the baby, but this is a family house. You've been warned.
A FEW HOUSE QUIRKS:
1) There is no real kitchen! We've provided a Nespresso coffee maker, microwave and mini fridge, plus cutlery and a few dishes. However, there is no sink (other than in the bathroom) and no stove/oven.
2) We have a dog. This is our home and the backyard is our happy place. You will see us and Homer (our 3-year-old Samoyed) puttering around. Homer is not allowed in the unit, but if you are allergic or generally not fond of dogs, this is not the place for you.
3) The bathroom is older than the rest of the unit and the door is not particularly.... sound-proof. (There used to be only a curtain there, so we're going to call this a win).
4) AT&T has limited reception in our neighborhood (Sun Valley).
You'll have access to our entire garden, from the fire pit to the reading bench under the pear tree.
Just let us know if you want to use the fire pit and we'll get you some wood.
For travelers staying more than one week, we'll happily give you access to our washer/dryer in the main house.
Interaction with guests
We live on the property and will be happy to help with anything you need.
Other things to note
Parking is super easy in our neighborhood. Since we live in the suburbs there's plenty of street parking and there's no permit required. There's almost always a space right in front of our house!
Okay with dogs? There's a 3-year-old samoyed on the property and you will most definitely see him hanging around.

I'm a 30-year-old writer living in San Rafael, CA. I spent 10 years traveling the world before settling down in California with my husband, dog and new baby. Among the places I've lived: New Zealand, England, Spain and Germany.
I tell bad jokes, laugh loudly and hug often. I'm big into genuine positivity, sharing cultural experiences and cooking yummy food and swapping recipes from around the world.
