This is the rest of Susan's Review from above. :)
We were told we could kayak over to Christmas Island but didn’t have time. Or, you can just take a lawn chair and sit on the dock – where the water is so clear we spotted a starfish and conch shell moving across the ocean floor. Truly, we did not ever need to leave!
We had some concern as to whether we would hear boat noise, but not the case at all. On the contrary, watching the bay activity along with the adorable small sailboats coming out of the nearby Yacht Club (kids learning to sail) was wonderful and entertaining. It is a short walk from the Villa to larger sandy beaches on Cowpet Bay and to other water toy rentals at the Elysian if you are so inclined.
Our. BEST. Day. Ever: The Villa owner has a fabulous new boat which we chartered for a full day of customized private-island hopping. “Captain Sherman” picked us up at the end of our own dock – so very cool! Absolutely the highlight of the trip, we snorkeled in several private coves off St. John, Christmas Island and Buck Island seeing fabulous fish, squid, a 5’ barracuda, stingrays, starfish, fan coral, turtles, an underwater garden, etc. We packed our lunch and had it on the boat in a private bay. Very comfortable, the boat has lots of room, a freshwater shower, cooler, and easy access ladder to get in/out for snorkeling or swimming. We highly recommend “Captain Sherman” (otherwise known as the Shermanator :) who knew all the island nooks and crannies and showed us an amazing day!
And, if you do feel you want to leave the property, you are very close to parasailing at Sapphire Beach (our 86 year old Mom loved parasailing!), restaurants at the Elysian and Ritz Carlton, and the town of Red Hook with lots of restaurants/grocery store and the ferry to St. John. Justin helped us arrange for a wonderful taxi driver, Warren, who toted our family around for the week … and we were ready to adopt him. If you have a car, you will find everything very easy and close to get to.
Other special features at the Villa that we appreciated were: an outdoor shower, relaxing hammock, a swing chair, 2) yoga mats, 2) safes, brand new efficient washer and dryer, jar for making sun tea J, suntan lotion and bug spray, gallon jugs of water, beach towels, master bedroom robes, fully stocked kitchen (pots and pans and dishes) along with some basic cooking ingredients in the cupboards.
When thinking about any downsides, my sister said “I hate to complain about anything because it was just that fabulous.” The hurricane proof sliding doors are a little heavy, there is a fairly steep driveway down to the villa (which you will find everywhere driving on St. Thomas) and we might have enjoyed a bathroom on the living room – but that wasn’t part of the building style in the 60’s. Really, very little that wasn’t an absolute dream experience.
And, our host Justin was wonderful – very prompt to respond to any questions and to accommodate us in any way he could. He has a lot of knowledge of the island so can without a doubt help maximize your vacation.
This is an extraordinary getaway, a spectacular indoor/outdoor waterfront retreat that has provided a phenomenal life time memory for my family. Having the opportunity to all be together and to also have lots of private space and to maximize the spectacular water view and activities was so very special. I could not recommend Sea Glass Villa more highly.
