A comfortable sofa/couch/double bed has been moved into the cottage as a place to sleep while the loft is being worked on. The loft is available now only to those willing to climb a ladder to the second floor and deal with construction going on around the chimney area. New roof was a surprise to us in 2016 as hail damage claim on the jeep rescue garage ended up including a new roof on the cottage. Wow! New trim boards had to be added many places as they had either never been there or had fallen off during the hundred years of the cottage existence. Looks like this roof could keep it for another hundred years. By staying with us Air bnb guest have helped to pay for the lumber needed to fix the trim under the roof so the roof could go on.

Come experience pioneer life for yourself in this state historical society farmstead cottage. Coal and wood cook stove works! Near a creek for short hikes and adventures on "Huck Finn Island". Within an hour of Garden of the Gods, foot of Pikes Peak. Sleep on sofa or pull it out to make a double sofa bed. Primitive bathroom chamber pot. Use of bathroom with shower moments away in the main house. Loft with queen sized air mattress is rented separately or can be included for additional $.

The space

Built in 1914. Your stay in the cottage helps make its rescue possible. View of cottonwood trees, front range Mountains and distant Pikes Peak. 1800's wood and coal cook stove /heating now has triple wall chimney and new cap so it is safer than it has been for the last 100 years. Sofa couch can be comfortably slept on as is or folded out into a double bed. Attic loft (which must be booked separately) is accessed by ladder which guest must be willing and able to climb ladder and fit through small window. Large elm & cottonwood trees nearby. Raccoon, white tailed deer, Great Horned Owls, Great Blue Heron, English doves, frogs, bears and bobcats have been seen recently nearby. Parking is very close and free. 20 min to downtown Colorado Springs but country living. Small refrigerator, microwave and electric heater have been added for convenience of guests. An electric two burner hot plate and toaster oven are in the drawers below the refrigerator for use when needed. The attic loft has a separate entrance and is not tall enough to stand but has a very comfortable queen air mattress. Near a creek for short hikes and adventures on "Huck Fin Island" by yourself. Primitive bathroom chamber pot. Use of bathroom with shower about 15 seconds away in the main house. By special request you can include the loft (which has a separate entrance from an outside ladder) as your bedroom or to just keep the cottage private and all to yourself.

Guest access

Guest may use cooking equipment if requested. Arrangements can be made to use shared bathrooms and shower in the main house next door. Loft area that must be rented separately now usable as an attic room accessible by ladder with a queen air mattress bed that can be adjusted for firmness. We have a sofa couch in the downstairs area. It pulls out into a double bed that could be slept on. There is a thin mattress that has been used by guest with extra posturpedic pad added in fall of 2017. Also an airmatress of queen of single size could be added for comfort or for the third guest. We recommend just one or two people for your space comfort. Food is to be kept in small refrigerator or metal containers.

Interaction with guests

Host lives next door in separate area so you can have as much privacy as you would like. I am usually present off and on during the guest stay and available by cell phone/text if there are questions or needs. We can make arrangements for more privacy if you would like during requested times.

Other things to note

You can search under Simpich and find out more about our family.

Cottage in being rescued. It has been greatly improved by the funds and labor guest have provided. The condition at this point is greatly improved from the before photos shown. There is no bathroom in the cottage at this time but a small one is planned for the future. In the meanwhile an old fashioned commode (porcelain chamber pot) is in the closet. Camping like commode (old porta potty) can be provided but it takes up most of the space in the closet. Showers can be arranged for in the main house.
Ceiling plaster has been replaced with drywall and insulation above it as of September, 2016. Trim has been added and replaced around windows and doors , stove pipe is new and useful as of spring 2017. We have a dog and an outdoor/garage/barn/cat. The attic loft is only accessible by ladder from the outside. We still only recommend that one guest stay for long periods of time but two have stayed happily here for several nights as you can see in the reviews. We do have a child pack and play and could squeeze in a young child or use an additional available double air mattress or camping pad to have a younger child on the floor. We have had up to five people in the cottage and loft for a short time but suggest 1-3 people. Thanks for considering a stay with us which helps rescue the cottage and allows me to spend more time with my grandkids.

As of January, 2017 owners may need to work on construction while you are staying. Insulation is now installed in the loft. The Queen air mattress there is new and working well. A backup twin airmattress is available for those that prefer it or would like to use it in the downstairs of tue cottage. The queen airmatress can be adjust with a battery operated air pump. Ask host if you need to adjust it. Electric lights now usable. A battery light can be pushed on and is to the right as you enter loft. Bringing your own flashlight or cell phone for the loft is also a good idea in case the batteries go out as it is a battery operated light. We loved the simplicity and adventurous feel of the cottage. Cora was so accommodating and thrilled our daughter with a brief horse ride. The creek was fun to hunt for frogs, beautiful rocks and just to simply enjoy a stroll in the country. The quiet was refreshing! It was a unique, off the beaten path experience and great for those who know that less is sometimes more. We will be back! Thank you Cora!

We had such an amazing stay with Cora for our 6 year anniversary! The place has everything you'll ever need from mini fridge and microwave and plenty of plugs to charge devices. There's a creek just a short walk away in the back of the house that is a lovely little spot to explore. Though the bathroom is in the main house, it's a very short walk and whenever we needed a shower it was always free. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a spot close to colorado springs or manitou but don't want to stay in the city. The hospitality is unmatched and you'll feel right at home.

Not as welcoming and Farm House means seriously just that. A horrible old pull out couch bed. A small dining table. And a water basin !

Response from Cora:
The cottage is not for everyone. Thanks for trying it. It does make you appreciate those who lived there in 1914 without the electricity, refrigerator and microwave. The couch was purchased with new unused mattress just a few years ago. I now have a brand new Posturpedic pad added that was given to me by a guest to use since he just needed it while he was staying to help his back problems. As I mentioned to you the loft has has a large queen bed air mattress that can be used for as little as $12.50 per more. I can also provide a queen airmatress in the cottage for those who just ask. I hope you were aware that you had the use of the large bathroom with shower just moments away in the main house along with the half bath downstairs in the main house. The large oak dining room table in the main house is also sometimes available for guest to use when requested. Thanks for your honest feed back. Your stay has helped to continue improving the 1914 Cottage for future guest.

Great guest. My apology I missed the chance to give a great review for you as a guest. It has been an incredibly busy time for me for which I am thankful. A brand new carpet piece for the loft was picked up for $1 at God's pantry so your stay not only helped rescue the cottage and buy a rug it also helped to feed hungry people because that is where the money for the carpet will go via God's Pantry. Thanks for the great review. Hope you get to come back soon and use the main floor of the cottage and the loft above next time.

Peaceful stay - very nice couple (hosts). Great breakfast with fresh milk and cherries. However, guests need to know that you have to walk a little ways to the house to use the bathroom which may be a challenge overnight. There was no lock on the front door when we were there. The place was a family place, so we weren't too worried about that. The best part of our stay was talking to Cora & her husband. Such lovely people with a great life story. They seem like honest hard-working people. The little cottage is very rough and unless you are the adventurous type, this one is not for you. The sleeping arrangement is a pull-out couch. You might want to bring your air mattress. I personally hope that these folks can upgrade with a better couch. Maybe someone out there will donate one. They sure deserve our understanding and admiration for trying to fix up this historical place. Their main home was interesting with lots of family things & country things inside. They seem like the "everyone is welcome" type of folks.

Response from Cora:
Thanks for trying the 1914 cottage. We do have locks on the doors that are locked when needed or when guest request them. We were just given a posturepedic matress pad that will make the couch in the cottage even more comfortable. I have several air mattresses and camping pads that can be provided upon request. We also have rooms available in the main house with full Posturepedic mattresses for guest who are will to pay for the additional comfort. Glad you enjoyed the fresh cherries, milk in the pretty glasses, the peacefulness of our place and the sunrise. The loft of the cottage has a very comfortable queen air mattress that can booked for just $13 in addition to the cost of the main floor of the cottage. Loft guest must be willing to climb the ladder into the small attic window to stay on that comfortable queen air mattress. When the whole cottage is booked with the loft included, the couch can be used as a couch and the loft can be the bedroom. Most people have enjoyed this couch which was purchased just a few years ago. Chamber pots are available upon request for those that wish to have them close and available. The cottage is a very special place that guest are helping by their stays and in other ways to rescue. It is not for everyone and we hope guest with needs like this guest will stay in the main house. We appreciate the honest feedback which helps others to understand the uniqueness of the farmstead cottage build in 1914.

Come, visit the beautiful Colorado mountains, and let your mind enjoy a trip back in time with the stories, results and photos of those who homesteaded here. Shady Grove is the place to find a bit of nostalgia whether you are here for business or pleasure. We have several rooming options for you. We offer short and long-term residence.

Looking for a private vacation? The home may be booked for the price of seven guests. The beautifully decorated master bedroom within the house is available rarely through special request. The upstairs rooms and downstairs couch can be rented separately or together.   Laundry and kitchen are accessible with room bookings sometimes. The majority of the house is available when you chose one room for one person.  The quaint 1914 cottage is also offered. This is the homestead of the first family while Shady Grove was being built. There is parking for campers without hook-ups. We can accommodate places to park a car or truck if you want to pull off in a safe area to sleep or park a big rig and travel with a smaller vehicle into the Colorado Mountains. We offer unique items not listed in the boxes that Air BNB offer. Please contact me if you have any questions.

I am aspiring to be a stay at home Grand Mama through serving guests through Air BNB. My husband and I are part of the Simpich Character Doll family.  The artwork my husband and I help to create over the years will be on display. We love music! My husband plays banjo, guitar and harmonica and I play the gut bucket bass. We have played professionally as the Cherry Creek Pickers. With a little encouragement, we might share some special music for you or bring your instrument and join us.  We enjoyed being wranglers and musicians at the Lost Valley Dude Ranch and the Singing Cowboy Dude Ranch in Buena Vista. We have fixed up several old houses in the Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek area. My husband loves trains and has all kinds of information in his head and in books about local trains. He also loves Jeeping especially in 1940 jeeps that he rescues. Airbnb experiences have not yet come to our area officially. We like the idea and have tried to fit a jeeping experience into an Airbnb box. Help us design a trip that works for you. We took a couple from France to dinner in a 1940's jeep. We also took them to Buena Vista and mountain sights near there. We would like to consider creating a special experienced designed to meet your needs. We have many adventuresome stories to share with you. We have traveled around Colorado all of our lives.

My motto for living is to enjoy life to its fullest. We hope you will experience that while staying at Shady Grove or anywhere on this State Historical Farmstead complete with horses. We use some of the funds from host stay to keep and improve this State Historical Farmstead. A small portion of your funds might also helps us to enlarge the farmstead garden project as we are now trying to plant something in honor of each guest that comes to stay so that it will be a farm/garden that others can enjoy in the future. We look forward to meeting your needs as you begin your adventure in picturesque Colorado. We love coming home here!
