Kristian and his wife met us when we arrived, helped with all our luggage (we aren't traveling light on this 50-day driving trip around Scandinavia), and showed us the finer points of the studio apartment we were staying in for two nights.
The apartment was immaculate, all new, and very comfortable. Everything we needed: refrigerator, stove, TV, Wifi, washer, plus countless little things that are always helpful. And the location is great: The apartment is right under Town Mountain that rises above the centre of Alesund, and the view from our front windows was lovely.
The next morning we walked three minutes from the apartment to the stairs that climb 418 steps to the top of Town Mountain to Aksla Viewpoint and a beautiful panorama of the city and surrounding mountains and islands.
Alesund, it is proposed, is "the most beautiful city in Norway." I wouldn't want to get into that argument in any country, but Alesund certainly is beautiful with countless wonderful Art Nouveau buildings erected after the devastating 1905 fire.
And Kristian's studio apartment is a great base to explore the city.
