The Old School House was built as the village school in 1823, and later became the Schoolmaster’s house in 1855, when a new school was built next door. David and Shelagh have completely renovated this Georgian property to create a cosy, welcoming home with many original features and all modern conveniences.
There are beautiful views of Scawfell and Wasdale from the rear, and over Ravenglass to Black Coombe at the front. Set back from the road, it's the perfect place to chill and relax after a busy day.
No. 1 Scawfell View has a king-sized bed, and there is also a desk if you need to stay in touch with work during your stay.
The large, luxurious guest bathroom with walk-in shower and deep, freestanding bathtub is shared with No. 2 Scawfell View; our guests just love the bathroom and don't mind sharing. Bath robes are provided. So, take time out to kick back a little.
Our guest lounge has a cosy, quiet area and a sitting room with TV, DVD player and surround sound. There's a selection of books, TV, games, video and audio CDs. Feel free to enjoy the peace and quiet of the house and garden - treat the place like a home from home. It works best when you're at ease with everything so if we can help with anything please say.
Interaction with guests
We love meeting people, and we're happy to chat about (almost) anything, but our prime concern is to ensure that your stay with us is relaxing and enjoyable - we'll greet you with tea, home-made cake and a smile. We can offer advice on walks and activities in the area, tell you the best places to eat and shop, or share a family meal (additional charge of £10 pp for 2 courses), but if you just want to be left alone, we will leave you to it.
Other things to note
As we are surrounded by fields, you may from time to time be disturbed by our tame blackbird, local sparrows, chattering swallows, nosy cows looking over the wall, the occasional banter between the horse and rooster on the next door farm, and the sound of the grass growing.
