Gerardo hosted us at very short notice and made sure we were met at the property. We were advised about the stairs prior to arriving, there are 100 steps to climb, this could be an issue for some guests. The apartment was clean enough, but the furniture was tired and some pieces are in a poor condition. The bathroom is a challenge, there is no shower cubicle so the very small bathroom operates as a wet room with a central hole in the floor for drainage. You need to remove the toilet paper prior to showering. The electrics in the apartment worked but do not look safe, the light fittings in the bathroom and kitchen are hanging off wires. The apartment was quiet and we did not hear the neighbours. The area seemed safe although timid or inexperienced travellers may be intimidated by the narrow street. Taxis can not get down the street and will drop you as near as they can. Arriving after dark may be a challenge. The apartment is not high end, this is reflected in the price, but it is adequate and in a good location to visit El Born and the Gothic area.
At the beginning Gerardo was very accommodating, he kindly let us drop our bags off early before the check in time. When we came back after climbing a large amount of stairs (it does mention this is in the description but it still sucked!) we realised that the place was not quite as spacious as the photos show. The main issues we had was that the shower is literally next to the toilet in this tiny room, we had to shower and then dress in the kitchen, and as there was dirt all under the pipes the water from the shower brought all kinds of things around your feet. During the first night the slat bed in the main bedroom collapsed so my parents had a sleepless night. In the morning we had quite enough as we felt the price we paid did not measure the amenities and lack of cleanliness we were expecting for such a high rate. Then having the bed break was the last straw. We contacted both Air BnB and the host with our concerns, Gerardo asked for the chance to rectify the issues and we allowed it and we were partially refunded for our 1st nights stay. This ate into one of our days in Barcelona. We were informed by the host that the previous guest had left a lot of things broken and that because we checked in early (we didn't just dropped bags and came back at check in time) that they were rushed to clean. Unfortunately that is not our problem and should not effect our experience. We arrived back late that night, and in the morning woke up to a message from Gerardo saying that we should have thanked him for fixing a bed he knew was partially broken before our stay, and telling us that we were exaggerating the conditions of the flat, and most people let things like that go and mention is later?? Very very unnecessary and unprofessional. Air BnB has been informed of all communication.
Loved the location. This was our second time in Barcelona and we picked El Born neighborhood again as our stay. If you have small luggage or just carry on and don't mind going up and down 6 floors this place is for you. We didn't mind so we loved it. It gets a little hot at night but we kept the fans on overnight. These place is good for young people.
Nice apartment in a fantastic location, El Born. We preferred this neighborhood, not as touristy as Gothic area (but 10 minute walk to all the sights in Gothic and Placa Catalunya). There were very nice restaurants and supermarkets throughout the neighborhood. The apartment is up 5 stories of stairs but we were told beforehand and it was a good way to work off all the food. If you're there in summer, ask for a fan for the second bedroom.
