Batokunku Village is located in South Gambia. My compound is a two minute walk from the Coastal Highway (beachside). It is a mere 7 minute walk to the best beach in the country.
Batokunku is a beautiful location and is conveniently situated for exploring the best of what Gambia has to offer. Local transport is cheap and plentiful. Private taxis are also available.
The 2 bedroomed cabin is comfortable, bright and clean and very safe.
The compound is a haven for birds, a twitchers delight.
Kerry Kunda Cabin has 2 large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a large, screened, verandah.
The cabin is clean, bright and well maintained. The beds are comfy. The furniture is mainly made locally by African craftsmen. Electricity is the same as the UK system with 3 pin square sockets. The floors have porcelain tiles. The shower cubicles are huge but please note that we do not have have water heaters. However the water is not cold like it is in Europe! The rooms are naturally cool as they are shaded by 4 mango trees, one on each corner. Floor fans are available.
Tea and coffee making facilities are provided on the verandah and there is a fridge with ice box.
Guests can rent one 'private room' to accommodate a maximum of 2 people and the cost will be £20 per 'private room' per night.
However, guests who want to rent the 'whole house' for a maximum of 4 people can do so for £20 per room x 2, i.e. £40 per night for the entire house.
The compound is huge, and, being filled with fruit trees, attracts hundreds of birds, bats and other winged wonders, it is a paradise for bird watchers.
Batokunku Village is in South Gambia. My compound is just off the Coastal Highway and a 7 minute walk down a sandy lane to the best beach in the country!
Batokunku is a beautiful location and is conveniently situated for exploring the wonderful West Coast Region of the Gambia. Local transport (minibus) is cheap and plentiful and private taxis are also available.
Batokunku is home to the luxury White Horse Residence Boutique Hotel, Suleima Lodge and Bendula Lodge. Tunbung Art Village and Gallery is in the next village of Tujereng. There is a local bar/restaurant around the corner from my compound run by Malang and his wife and there are several beach bars all of which offer all day food and drink.
My compound offers travellers the best of both worlds. It is a comfortable, relaxed oasis in the midst of a wonderful Mandinka village where visitors can enjoy an authentic interaction with Gambians and Africa.
I have lived in The Gambia for almost 20 happy years, 14 of which have been in Batokunku.
Welcome to my world!
Guests have access to the whole compound including sun deck.
Interaction with guests
When I am round I'm happy to help my guests in any way I can.
My compound worker, Ousman, is knowledgeable and helpful and he speaks good English. He will be delighted to help guests in any way he can, just ask.
If you have any questions prior to booking please feel free to contact me via airbnb and I will be happy to answer them.
I use Whats app so you can text me. Whats app calls can often be unsatisfactory so it is generally better to text.
I will give you my Gambian mobile number once you have booked.
Other things to note
Kerry Kunda Cabin has two huge bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms which can be rented individually as a 'Private Room' or as an entire unit or as 'Whole House'.
Please Note: There are constraints in how airbnb listings work and I am trying to work within these constraints. Basically I am offering one 'private room' for 2 people for £20 per room per night. However if a guest wanted to rent the second room they would pay a further £20 as that is the amount charged for additional guests after the first two guests. This means the 'whole house' with 2 en-suite bedrooms would be offered at £40 per night. The cabin accommodates a maximum of 4 guests. I hope this is clear. If you have any queries please contact me. The 'entire house' is NOT being offered at £20 per night!
Smoking is ok in the compound but not inside the house.
The compound is a private space and guests are requested to respect their host's privacy. Visitors are not permitted.
The Gambia is a Muslim country with strict dress and behaviour codes. Please acquaint yourself with the mores of the country and modify your dress/behaviour so as not to cause offence.
All I ask is that you respect my home, my staff, the natural environment, the village and the people of the Gambia.
Thank you for your understanding and compliance.
In 1998 I took very early retirement in order to go and live in West Africa full time and spent sixteen years there. Now I spend winter in Africa and the rest of the year in my London home.
I love travelling, particularly around Africa, but also USA and India. I enjoy meeting new people and exploring new places.
I also enjoy reading, going to the theatre, Kundalini yoga, music and gardening. My latest hobby is kayaking! I started in summer 2016 and find it enormous fun.
I am a people person and I get a deep sense of satisfaction from helping others.
My life moto? What goes around comes around, or, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I believe in karma!
