The area has been declared a natural and archaeological park due to the many rupestrian Bizantine settlements with caves where frescoes can be admired particularly those of the rocky churches (one of them being called the Sistine Chapel of he rocky culture). It is also possible to visit the Castellana caves with their beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. The countryside is famous for its 'trulli', the houses with cone-shaped roofs and going towards the Ionian sea you reach the ruins of the ancient Greek settlement of Metaponto. Sandy beaches on the Ionio are at around 15km from the house while the Adriatic seaside is at about 40km. Daily excursions can be made to Alberobello (UNESCO site for its trulli), Martina Franca, Noci, Ostuni, Taranto, Bari, Matera, Trani and many other locations still within easy travel for a day out.
