Part of our old villa home is this cosy and comfortable separate apartment which has been freshly painted, and finished with vintage touches.
We're close to everything that makes Te Aroha special. 5 min walk to shops & cafes, the domain with mineral spas, hot pools, geyser & mountain tracks. And surrounded by waterfalls & waterholes. A 5 min bike ride from the Hauraki Rail Trail. The perfect base for exploring the area.

The space

Our place is a traditional wooden villa home, rich in history. Originally owned by the local blacksmith, everyone from the local nuns to ruffian gangs have lived here. Everyone has a story about this place! It's old, wobbly and squeaky, but comfy, cosy and easy to relax in. Sit on the front verandah and enjoy the sunset or on the back porch and stare up at the mountain...

Guest access

The Blacksmith's Cottage is an old house split into two separate smaller flats/apartments. We live in one side and you have the other all to yourself - with separate entrance and off street parking. Your place is joined to the main house by an internal door (that leads to our office). When guests stay, we lock that door for your privacy.

You're welcome to enjoy all areas outside (including the trampoline!), and we encourage you to feel at home and relax in the space as if you live here too. We're used to people sharing the space or living there for stretches and think nothing of it!

Interaction with guests

We live in the other half of the house, and are very friendly and social. I work at home as a designer and am generally around during the day to assist. We will respect your privacy and leave you to it, but are more than happy to share a coffee or a glass of wine, and get to know you too!

We are very happy to share advice and suggestions about what to do, or about the area. We're kind of new to the area too, so are really loving finding out about the local treasures and hidden gems.

We have a cat called Mittens and a smoochy dog called Pickles who both lurk around wanting pats.

Other things to note

We are close to the historic fire station (as is virtually all local accomodation) - which is very much still functioning! The siren is really loud and can be a bit startling if you're not used to it (designed to be, of course!). It doesn't go off often, or for long, but it's unpredictable. Most people like it, as it's part of rural kiwi life, and exciting to watch the drama unfold! But as courtesy we provide this warning & a set of ear fresh tangerine coloured earplugs for every guest! :)

We had a great stay at Nikki & Damon' place. What a little gem, so much more than expected. Warm, cosy and beautifully decorated. Nikki was a great host who told us of the history of the cottage and township and places to see. She also gave us tips for the rest of our trip, much appreciated.

This is just what I expect an AIRBNB to be like. Premises just like te picture and friendly genuine hosts who welcome you and settle you in. Nikki and Damon were around if I needed anything and the rooms were warm and more than adequate for one or two people. Handy to everything this pretty town has to offer, I would happily stay again.

Nikki and Damon are really relaxed, breezy hosts. The little cottage is spotless and has is fully kitted out, with every little detail thought through. You'll just feel so taken care of! My recommendation for any potential guests - bring everything you need for some good antipasti and just get cozy.

It's a cute little retro themed cottage which as we walked in greeted us with nice and tidy interiors along with a sweet fresh scent. It is very conveniently located, with the city centre and cafes just a few mins walk and the domain and spas another 5mins away. The kitchen is well stocked with all the essentials (white ware & appliances). The bathroom is clean and has all the essential toiletries and ample towels along with a few spares if you need them. Nikki is a lovely host and was super easy to communicate with. She is a beautiful person who does everything in her power to make the stay smooth n easy for her guests. Would love to recommend her and will be back again sometime soon :)

We are a small family with one son, a cat and a dog, who recently left the city after falling in love with our charming old house, nestled under majestic Mt Te Aroha. We are lovers of good food, music, art and coffee!
Nikki particularly enjoys finding opp-shop treasures and might even share a secret spot or two. Damon makes an excellent flat white!
