Part of our old villa home is this cosy and comfortable separate apartment which has been freshly painted, and finished with vintage touches.
We're close to everything that makes Te Aroha special. 5 min walk to shops & cafes, the domain with mineral spas, hot pools, geyser & mountain tracks. And surrounded by waterfalls & waterholes. A 5 min bike ride from the Hauraki Rail Trail. The perfect base for exploring the area.
Our place is a traditional wooden villa home, rich in history. Originally owned by the local blacksmith, everyone from the local nuns to ruffian gangs have lived here. Everyone has a story about this place! It's old, wobbly and squeaky, but comfy, cosy and easy to relax in. Sit on the front verandah and enjoy the sunset or on the back porch and stare up at the mountain...
The Blacksmith's Cottage is an old house split into two separate smaller flats/apartments. We live in one side and you have the other all to yourself - with separate entrance and off street parking. Your place is joined to the main house by an internal door (that leads to our office). When guests stay, we lock that door for your privacy.
You're welcome to enjoy all areas outside (including the trampoline!), and we encourage you to feel at home and relax in the space as if you live here too. We're used to people sharing the space or living there for stretches and think nothing of it!
Interaction with guests
We live in the other half of the house, and are very friendly and social. I work at home as a designer and am generally around during the day to assist. We will respect your privacy and leave you to it, but are more than happy to share a coffee or a glass of wine, and get to know you too!
We are very happy to share advice and suggestions about what to do, or about the area. We're kind of new to the area too, so are really loving finding out about the local treasures and hidden gems.
We have a cat called Mittens and a smoochy dog called Pickles who both lurk around wanting pats.
Other things to note
We are close to the historic fire station (as is virtually all local accomodation) - which is very much still functioning! The siren is really loud and can be a bit startling if you're not used to it (designed to be, of course!). It doesn't go off often, or for long, but it's unpredictable. Most people like it, as it's part of rural kiwi life, and exciting to watch the drama unfold! But as courtesy we provide this warning & a set of ear fresh tangerine coloured earplugs for every guest! :)
You're welcome to use any food and provisions in the apartment, but please tidy up and leave the kitchen as you found it (don't worry about the bedding). Shoes off inside and smokers strictly outside. Please be considerate with noise levels after 10 (our neighbor is the local baker).
Please keep the big side gate shut at all times as it prevents the dog from going on an unauthorised adventure.
Suitable for child or a baby as there is room for a portacot or a single air bed, but please check first. We have an air bed you can use.
We are a small family with one son, a cat and a dog, who recently left the city after falling in love with our charming old house, nestled under majestic Mt Te Aroha. We are lovers of good food, music, art and coffee!
Nikki particularly enjoys finding opp-shop treasures and might even share a secret spot or two. Damon makes an excellent flat white!
