About this listing

I have been a host in my own house for 2 years and I am now also hosting the upper floor of a duplex, just two blocks west, in the same safe and attractive neighborhood. It is just around the corner from the Rice Village with shops, restaurants and pubs. And it is very close to Rice University, the train to downtown, and the medical center. It is minimally furnished, has no personal effects, and is light and attractive, with many windows and lovely views of the trees.

The space

This apartment is the top floor of a large duplex in a wonderful, safe neighborhood. There are two bedrooms and one bathroom. As this is Houston and the summer is almost here, I should say that the central a/c is new and wonderful. The entrance is from the front door, with the stairs just inside. The downstairs unit is accessed from the side of the house. Both units are completely self-contained.

Guest access

There is no washer or dryer in the apt but if you stay longer than 3 days you may use the facilities in the garage behind the house.

Interaction with guests

The keys will be in a lock box and I will meet you there if I am available. My son and his wife live in the lower unit and they will check on you if you like. They will be happy to help in any way, but they both work, whereas I am retired so am more available during the day. My son has two dogs, one small, one large, but no dogs have ever been upstairs, so people with animal allergies will be safe. And the dogs bark rarely...possibly when people come in, and when the mail is delivered.

Other things to note

The kitchen has everything you will need if you want to cook. I will make sure there is milk, eggs, butter, marmalade, jam, and bread for breakfast. There are many wonderful and varied restaurants just around the corner. As we are so close to the Village, there is no parking on the street at any time without a permit. There is a parking permit for you to use just inside the front door...please hang it from your rear view mirror immediately!

It was a most wonderful stay. Too comfortable that we almost did not want to go to our Rice tour. Walking distance to rice village, which had lively college atmosphere. Super clean and beds comfortable. Host met us to give very clear instructions-easy to coordinate with. Wifi and apple tv for our use. Generous check out time allowed us to not rush getting things packed before our tour; we had ample time to do so later. Clean floors and super soft rugs made us feel spoiled.

The basis of a good experience while visiting a new city is the accommodations, and Olga's rental in Houston is fantastic. The place is very clean throughout and the kitchen and bath are stocked with everyday essentials you would otherwise need to bring with you. Olga is very pleasant woman and attentive to any questions you may have. She made herself available for check in as soon as we arrived in Houston so we could get settled in. No late afternoon check in like a hotel. Would recommend Olga's place in a heartbeat.

A delightful place, airy, very clean, in a beautiful tree-lined neighborhood and walking distance to food, shops and Rice University. We will definitely be back! Olga was very helpful and available, worked with our travel plans and gave detailed instructions.

Olga User ProfileOlga is a superhost.

I have recently retired from working at the Texas Medical Center running a graduate program for physicians to learn to do clinical research. I miss my students, but I love meeting interesting young (and older!) people through airbnb.

I am originally from Wales, and I have three grown sons, and one little grandson. They live in Houston, Denver, and New York City, and thankfully I see them often.

I live with one large dog and find myself talking to all the dogs I meet on my travels. I also love children and am especially happy when guests bring a child or two. (June, 2017: My dog's name is Bamba, but I must pronounce it funny in my Welsh-Texan accent...because I received a thank you note the other day from a particularly lovely guest addressed to "Olga and Boombah." I love it! So full of zest. So her name is now officially Boombah.)
