Tranquil experience for anyone wanting to get back to nature! Walk on foot to a secluded spot in a private area of woodland were you'll find a 4 metre unfurnished bell tent, fire pit, basic compost loo, water containers, tarp and hammock. Bring your own mats, sleeping bags, firewood and cooking gear. It's off grid so no running water, electricity, lights, flush toilet! Fire grill to cook on, tree stump seats, wash up bucket, fire safety bucket. We also have a 6 person bell tent listing!

The space

You are sharing this wood with foxes, badgers, deer, squirrels, rabbits, hare, mice, buzzards, chiffchaffs, great tits, kestrels, goat willows, birch, many insects and much more which you may spot!

Guest access

We advise having a car to get to the remote woodland, and guests need to be able to walk unaided for at least 5 minutes along narrow paths and uneven ground. Don’t forget you can wander around the wood, some of it is quite overgrown. Outside of the wood you will need to stick to Public Footpaths. Try spotting all the wildlife, following the animal tracks, or identifying and listening for different birds.

Interaction with guests

We'll meet you to settle you into your camp area. Then we'll leave you to it, unless you need something, then just send us a message and we'll help as soon as we can.

Other things to note

There is no actual bed, you need to bring your own camp mats and sleeping bags. It's off grid so no running water, electricity, lights or flush toilet! It is very dark in the wood at night, so arrival before dark is advisable as it will be easy to get lost on the local roads and in the wood. Always have more layers than you think you need, it is always cooler under tree cover. You have your area of the woodland to yourself, there is a second bell tent in a seperate area nearby, and you may sometimes be sharing the woodland with children’s Forest Birthday Parties, they will remain at the educational area, and not be close to your bell tent. Occasional dog walkers wander through or near the wood as walkers are officially allowed access. If you want us to provide your firewood/kindling/firelighters for £12, please message us to order and pay in advance. We recommend a max of 4 adults in the tent, there is a charge of £6 per additional person after that, we advise bringing an extra pop up tent if your extra people are adults. Some guests have brought their bushcraft knives for whittling projects, and bicycles for rides around the local tracks. A 30 litre container of drinking water is provided.

Beautifully secluded, private and kitted out for a night or two in the 'wild'! The belltent was cosy for six, but do-able. Loved cooking on the campfire and nattering, whittling sticks and going on exploring trips, making tracks/trails in the wood. Even managed to wake a deer just minutes from our tent early in the morning. Just be prepared for the weather and take layers and blankets and plenty of firewood!

Tent in the woods was exactly as described. A great opportunity to spend time totally immersed in natural surroundings. We had everything we needed for a night's adventure. Great fun.

Holly's place was absolutely lovely. Really nice and away in its own woodland. We had a great day swimming by the weir and wonderful evenings cooking on the campfire. We cycled there up the route 13 bike path from Colchester station (approx 10mi.) and then on the way home across to Audley End station (approx 30mi.). Both were beautiful rides surrounded by corn fields and more blackberries, plums, mushrooms and apples than we could squeeze into our bags. Would thoroughly recommend!

Great experience! Shhh! Don't tell everyone about this fabulous wild camp in the woods! Go prepared and be organised in taking only the essentials. It's camping at its basic and most enjoyable. While away an evening whittling and drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows. No phone signal! Perfect!

I loved every minute of my stay here. Contact with Holly was easy and regular, she made sure I had what I needed, brought me extras after a torrential 24 hours of rain; everything about the camp is thoughtful and well planned. It is exactly as described - no frills. If you want to live wild without having to travel to the far reaches of Britain, this is the place to do it. Lovely villages and towns nearby. The Swan at Little Henny, Sudbury. And St Stephen's chapel at Bures was very special. Bring a bicycle if you can - I was so happy I did.

I am a Forest school Leader for local families and schools, working in a variety of woodlands in the Stour Valley. We are lucky enough to have enjoyed some wild camps in the woods, and wanted to share this magical experience with other folk who would like to try getting closer to nature for the night!
