Ken's home is conveniently located very close to the University of Chicago. Ken is a wonderful host, he went above and beyond in order to accommodate me on a very short notice in addition to being very responsive to messages. The place is clean and quiet. Overall, Ken provided a …

Extremely basic provisions and quite over-priced for the location. Very frustrating to enter since the host did not return my calls when I couldn't figure out how to unlock the electronic front door lock.

Response from Kenneth:
I'm sorry that Larry had a problem. Larry failed to *ever* reply to (any of) our questions in the Messaging Center, and to expected me to be on-hand to let him in despite arriving earlier than he indicated and calling me at 2am local time. Once I knew Larry had an entry problem, I sent an open code for the door, asked another guest to let him in, and send follow-up in the Messaging Center. I'm also sorry Larry felt a lack of value. He paid $52/night (post-tax) on a weekend with a major sports event and concert. That is almost half our peak rate.

I rented Kenneth place for a guest (Tope) due to my place was overbooked. However, after the conversation with Tope, he said the stay at Kenneth place was great. The place was very quite and clean. Tope got a chance to meet some very nice people as the place was shared space. …

The area in which the home is located is very run-down and is probably one of the worst in Chicago. The room I slept in could not lock nor could it even shut completely.

Response from Kenneth:
I reached out to Arlett, a new AirBnBer, earlier today and hoped to discuss, but unfortunately she has not replied and this is the kind of review that needs quick reply. The door is original, solid cherry. With unexpected heat and humidity, it has expanded and had a problem closing. I spent several hours paning it so it would close today, and had she let me know it was a problem, would have done so immediately. The closing mechanism is also original, probably constructed by hand prior to 1910. I’m hesitant to modify in any way that would be destructive. This is also a house and a home. I don’t want anyone here, whom we cannot trust, not to enter other guests’ rooms, much less steal. Equally, this is an community, predominantly African-American, black, with people in poverty. I’m very aware of the crime statistics: violent crime is much higher in Lincoln Park. I’d have been glad to address this with Arlett if she’d asked. But there are issues of prejudice here. As well, Arlett failed to lock our front door on leaving each morning-- and chose to rebook and extend her stay without mentioning her concerns. It’s not a big deal: it’s probably quite safe to leave the doors unlocked here. But many people have worked hard to make this a safe neighborhood, and such a mean review, is quite dismaying.
