An unbelievable launch pad or just-stay-around-home pad for your exploration of Southern Utah, Lake Powell, and the Grand Canyon. Amazing views of Zion National Park from the south, Smithsonian Butte and Gooseberry Mesa from the west. Take day trips to some of earth's most majestic sites or stay home and enjoy the giant playroom, private tennis court, or gorgeous views. There is easy access to vast federal lands from this unparalleled property.

The space

This house is eccentric and absolutely remarkable, and the views are breathtaking! The red adobe style gives it the perfect desert feel, but the solid log beams, wood room and ceilings give it a warm and rustic feeling on the inside. With four bathrooms, four dedicated bedrooms, and one semi-bedroom with a pull-out sofa, you can bring a few families or just a large group of friends. And even though some of earth's most exotic geological features are a short drive away, you may not want to leave this memorable vista.

The house offers a massive gameroom, complete with pool table, shuffleboard, foosball, and air hockey. Attached to this space is a carpeted TV room with an xbox for video games, complete with a pull-out sofa for extra bedding. But that's just the start of what makes this home an ideal western retreat.

Enjoy the well-lit private tennis court just above the house looking right at Smithsonian Butte which also has a two hoop basketball court. Enjoy the mesa top breezes from the covered front porch or patio area just outside the front entrance on our comfortable outdoor gathering furniture. Also, take the group or family out for a round of beach volleyball on the regulation size sand court.

But the location and the views may be the stand-out feature. From the front, you are looking at the south of Zion and the entrance to Zion Canyon, arguably the prettiest place on earth. Straight ahead is the majestic Smithsonian Butte, across a bit of ranch land and virtually unlimited federal land, dirt roads, campsites and trails. As the home sits on a rock mesa in the middle of the small community of Apple Valley, you can walk to any edge and see the valley and town below.

It's hard to imagine a more ideal hub for your exploration of southern Utah and northern Arizona, including a short jaunt to Zion National Park, and within 2 hours of the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Anetlope Canyon, Bryce Canyon and just a bit further to Capital Reef National Park. Jacob's lake, just above Grand Canyon's North Rim is under an hour away, while the exotic waves of Snow Canyon Park is roughly a thirty minute drive. Pine Valley, Brian Head, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are just east of Kanab, an easy hour's drive. Hurricane and St. George are your closest full-service towns. This house is a real western retreat, comfortable yet rustic, with panoramic views and a central location to natural wonders.

Guest access

You will have the entire 2.5 acres, fenced and gated, to yourself during your stay. This includes the home, detached playroom, tennis courts, covered space and two car garage with a third detached garage for overflow. There is space to park a trailer, RV, or boat on the property as well.

Interaction with guests

My wife and I are always available to help, advise, share insight on the area and assist in any way; however, if you are here we're in another state. Should there be any issues we have cleaning, maintenance and co-hosting services nearby for quick response.

I highly recommend a stay at the Smithsonian Ranch. For us, it was a perfect spot for our group of 5 to explore the area. Although it's not right in the town of Springdale, directly outside of Zion National Park, the drive to and from is quick and easy, and the seclusion and views at the house are worth it. It's perfect for a larger group, with many sleeping arrangements and many social spaces. Eating and hanging outside on the porch with the views is wonderful. The kitchen is pretty well equipped and having the extra amenities like TV, game room, tennis court make for great relaxation after a long day of hiking.

This house had a great location (only about 45 minutes away from Zion/Kolob Canyon and a bit over 2 hrs from Bryce) and was very welcoming. It includes almost anything you can think of from a game room to multiple sports courts and so you will most likely never run out of activities to do here. Frank and Connie were also very quick with their response times whenever I had a question about the place which is ideal. The house itself was clean however, we did run into some problems with some critters entering the front part of the house but wasn't a major problem. This house is also very pet friendly with plenty of room in the front and back for them to roam around. Overall I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay while visiting Utah. 5 out of 5 stars!!

This house is a true gem: beautiful and cozy, well equiped and very comfortable. Great views from the wonderful veranda, plenty privacy, a dream for active families, since sporty teens and game-lovers do not get a chance to get bored. We loved this house, and wished our stay here could have been much longer! Drive times to Zion and Bryce were good. Supermarket at Hurricane at only 18 minutes.

This place is as good as it gets. If we could give it 6 stars (or 10!) we totally would. It's situated on top of a hill just 2 hours from the Grand Canyon, 2 hours from the Vegas airport, 45 minutes from Zion, 15 minutes from Hurricane, Hildale and Colorado city, and ZERO minutes from the best views of Zion and the surrounding mountains. We took our family out for a week of Zion & the rest of what southern Utah has to offer, and found so much more than we were expecting. Watching the sun set over Gooseberry Mesa from the game room, and then watching it rise over Smithsonian Butte from the side deck - just incredible. We drove the dirt road into the back size of Zion, and our only regret is that we didn't bring a 4-wheel-drive, because those back roads are NOT built for the Ford Fusion Hybrid... We heard coyotes yipping in the night, saw golden eagles, and managed to catch (and release) a few lizards. And he stars were on fleek. The house itself was an absolute dream. The huge jetted tub in the master is not to be missed. We watched a couple movies. And the girls used extra blankets to turn their bunk-beds into personal caves, because teenagers are weird. The kitchen was well-appointed, and the little top-oven-thingie got a lot of use. The tennis court plays great - and the rackets they left us were not too shabby! We played a little volleyball, too! All in all, we had an incredible week, and can not WAIT to come back again. The hosts were super helpful, and the house was basically perfect. Literally, we started pricing flights as soon as we got home. This place is that good.

Frank's place is truly wonderful! The views are incredible and the space has plenty of room! It was very clean as well. The kids loved the game room and the adults loved the outside spaces! Frank was very responsive and easy to contact. We enjoyed every minute her and hope to return!
