The cottage was originally in Eastern Germany where it was dismantled and brought to Ireland and reassembled about 18 years ago. The frame is about 200 years old. The slates are also old but the rest is modern. A barn, which was nearby the original cottage was dismantled and the beams used within the castle. The former owners lived in the cottage while they restored the castle.

The approach to the Castle was a quiet, scenic drive & a rainbow appeared over it, as we got closer. Cecil met us on arrival & the first thing you notice is that he is very likeable & friendly. After dropping our luggage off in the cottage we were treated to a tour of the castl…

This is a slightly quirky choice of accommodation but good value. The old Black Forest cottage style means there is not a lot of natural light and the staircase to the loft bedroom is very steep ( hence the ropes). However we got used to the latter and Cecil had kindling ready t…

Thanks Jeanette. I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay at my quirky cottage. It is the real deal (not style) as the core of the cottage is over 200 years old and was transported to Grantstown from the Eastern part of Germany 17 years ago. The double bath is huge but as you say it is nice.

This place is just WOOWW! What an incredible experience! We got to spend two nights in the beautiful, historic, spacious, tastefully decorated cottage - a destination in itself. Loved the details, the artwork, the claw bathtub... we couldn't stop taking photos. The cottage is ver…

Our stay was quite magical; first a turn off the castle and then off to our 200 year old house with a view of the castle!

Having qualified as a doctor in Trinity College Dublin I moved to the UK to train as a GP. I had hoped to return to Ireland after completing my training but instead I joined a partnership where I remained for thirty years. Following 'early' retirement from general practice I cont…
