The space

The Captain Morse House is a classic in town vacation rental. We are just 2 blocks to town and 3 blocks to the beach. There are 26 rooms, 11 bedrooms, 7 baths, 2 kitchens 2 dining rooms, 2 front porches and a very large yard. We are steps from Edgartown harbor and the town docks. Our backyard is one of the largest in town and features a patio with seating for 24. We are one of the best vacation homes on the island with a superb location. I encourage you to contact me to discuss your vacation.

The Captain Morse House is large luxurious vacation rental home, at the corner of Morse and North Water streets. It is one of Edgartown's finest homes having been built in 1840 for Captain John Osborne Morse. This exquisitely detailed home is perfect for your dream vineyard vacation and a superb example of the grand homes built by the New England Whaling Captains.

Modern amenities and central air conditioning mean comfort and relaxation.
The home features eleven bedrooms and seven full baths on three floors, a formal living room and dining room, a family room, a game room, and two new gourmet kitchens all tastefully decorated with period furnishings and artwork. Current accommodations can handle up to 23 people in 14 beds. With less people your vacation is closer to the way that discerning visitors enjoyed the home in years gone by when it was a private summer residence.

Outside of the home on the North Water side facing the water are two spacious porches with partial water views of Edgartown Harbor and the Chappy Ferry. The harbor and Morse Street dock is just down the street. The backyard is one of Edgartown's largest and features a spacious bricked patio where you can enjoy a barbecue, croquet and other lawn games. There is off street parking for three cars (one large and 2-3 small).

We are committed to doing whatever I can to make your stay on Martha's Vineyard a special one. Our house is one of the best available in town and offers any visitor a truly unique island experience. Judging from our annual sell out our guests agree as well.

The rental includes the entire house however we do have the ability to split the front from the back as there are two complete kitchens in the home. This is normally only done during the off season. You will see it mentioned as such in the description.

There is a caretaker who is available for emergencies. I am available by telephone or email for questions.

The home is what is called the Village area of Edgartown. We are perfectly located just 3 blocks from Main St. Edgartown and 2 Blocks from the Lighthouse Beach. At the foot of Morse Street is The Edgartown Wharf and a marina where you can access the harbor just as if it was your own dock. The stately white Greek Revival houses built by the whaling captains have been carefully maintained. They make the town a museum-piece community, a seaport village preserved from the early 19th century.

We provide bikes. There is a driveway that can handle 3-4 cars. (No parking onsite if sharing the back of the house.

Getting to Martha's Vineyard

Make your plans early. Get Ferry Reservations as soon as they are available in January of each year.

Allow plenty of time. If you rush about it makes it stressful for all involved. If you get to Woods Hole early for your boat it is fun to check out the town. Walk over the bridge to the North West of the town and explore the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Have a relaxing meal at one of their excellent restaurants. These are just some of the restaurants along the way – from North to South

Cars are not needed for a trip to Martha’s Vineyard

You can do it all on island without a car. There are plenty of cabs that come when they are called and they use 15 passenger vans for the most part. The MV bus system is really good and a short walk from the house. The cost and hassle of taking a car to the island through the Steamship authority (the only way to do it) is often way more than taking a cab anywhere you want to go (rainy day in Oak Bluffs, grocery shopping etc., out to a bar.) If you have to have your car then there is no substitute for making early ferry reservations on the Steamship Authority website. Take the time to make an online account and do it that way. Waiting on the phone is normally torture. If you have to do errands do them EARLY in the morning.

If you decide to leave the car there are at least five other additional ways to get to the island. I prefer the Falmouth ferry especially if my travel plans can avoid Cape traffic (thickest on Friday and Sunday Evenings). The “Pied Piper” offers valet parking. On arrival they come in at the Edgartown Town Dock. From there the Captain Morse House is only two blocks away and an easy walk. We have a garden cart to carry luggage in the tool shed or a cab is easy to get . When you are ready to leave the Ferry takes you back to Falmouth and your car is ready and waiting for you. This is by far the most relaxing and fun way to go.

If you want to cut out the trip to Falmouth, especially if you are coming from Connecticut or New York then consider either the NE Fast Ferry from New Bedford or the Vineyard Fast Ferry from Quonset Point in Rhode Island. The disadvantage is the parking is a bit harder (drop off bags first) and you are let off in either Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven rather than in Edgartown. The ride from Quonset can be rough so mind the weather.

New service since 2009 is the NE Fast Ferry service from New Jersey and New York. This is the ultimate way to travel to the island especially if you live in the city. Reservations are highly recommended.

For folks who want to travel by Air there are several that service the island. The price is reasonable and will allow connections from other parts of the country. Again once on island you will really not miss a car.

Guest access

The rental includes the entire house however we do have the ability to split the front from the back as there are two complete kitchens in the home. This is normally only done during the off season. You will see it mentioned as such in the description. Some lower rates are based on 14 people where we have a lower occupancy of the home with less wear and tear. Please communicate with me as to how many guests will stay at the house.

Interaction with guests

I have a full time caretaker to respond to emergencies. He is available during normal business hours and on an emergency basis.

The neighbourhood

The Captain Morse House has a wonderful location nearby several beaches. We are walking distance to the town and walking distance to the harbor and beaches. Our guests frequently remark on the perfect location of the house. Families love the fact that the kids can be mobile. Ideally you kick them out of the house after breakfast and only see them back for dinner, or maybe lunch. Kids love the independence and the parents can park the car for the week and not have to shuttle the kids from one location to another. A true vacation.

Getting around

We are close to the transportation center and there are excellent alternatives for moving around. The house contains several bikes that are available to you once a waiver of liability is signed.

Other things to note

The tenant is required to execute our standard lease that takes precedent over any agreements and representations that Airbnb may make. The tenant must place a security deposit directly with us via personal check or wire transfer. While Airbnb has their own system for the security deposit and represents that it is sufficient we have found that it is not and that it does not provide us with the "security" that the rental of this house requires. Your actual rental payments can continue to go through Airbnb. If you are not comfortable with this policy then you should consider other properties. Since 2008 we have run the house this way and have never had an issue with a guest because of it.

I graduated from Tufts University in 1977 and ran an Action Sports / Surf shop from 1974 until 2007. Since then I have managed this property full time.
