- Hello and Welcome to Upper Casita Azulejos

I hope that your time at Casita Azulejos will provide you with a wonderful, relaxing retreat. The following tips and information will help make your vacation here a smooth and comfortable one. Please note that Casita Azulejos provides wi-fi, A/C in the bedroom only and high powered fans, but does not have a television. VERY IMPORTANT: Only use the AC when you are in the bedroom, Please turn off when not at the house. It is VERY expensive to run.

Transportation: There are a couple ways to get to the casita from the airport: Bus is around 35 pesos. To get the bus you will need to go outside the airport and walk across the pedestrian overpass and take the bus that says Sayulita. It will let you off on the other side of the bridge and you’ll be walking with your luggage on cobblestone streets for about 15 minutes. Taxi from the curb is around $900 pesos plus a tip Or you can cross the pedestrian bridge where the bus stops and get a taxi for less than at the airport curb.

Very Important: Check in time is no earlier than 4pm. Check out time is no later than 11am. This is to insure that the cleaning crew has enough time to get the place clean and the laundry done for the next guests coming in on the same day.

Drinking Water: There are two 5-gallon bottles of drinking water at the house. If by chance you are running low on water, let Jewel know. Water is not delivered on Sundays, please let us know 24 hours in advance.

A personal Chef Can be contacted (not included with Casita rental) Sofia Sanchez (URL HIDDEN)

Neighborhood Cats: There are some beautiful kitties that love to hang around Casita Azulejos, however PLEASE do not let them in the house! My housekeeper is allergic and so might be the following guests.

House Keys: I have installed a lock box with one key inside, the box is located to the right of the entrance gate with the heart on the door. The current key code will be provided a few days before your arrival. Please make a note of this and if you get in after dark, Jewel will leave the patio lights on. There will be one more additional key inside the house when you get in. Please lock the door and return one key to the lock box and close the entrance gate when you check out.

Security: Be advised that you are in a tourist town and with tourists, come thieves unfortunately. Avoid creating the opportunity to become a victim. Keep all your electronics, technology, money and bags locked inside and out of the line of site or use the safe. Also when leaving the house, always lock the door and close the gate.

Critters: The iguanas like the trees surrounding the property and if you look for them, you will see them up there. They unfortunately leave some of their droppings that are not so nice, a quick sweeping or hose down will make your next trip up the stairs that much more pleasant. There are geckos on the walls of the house. You will recognize the geckos by the clicking sounds they make. They are good, don’t be afraid of them. The things to watch for are scorpions. I’ve never seen one yet, but the best thing to do is not leave clothing or towels on the floor and be sure to shake stuff out, including shoes before putting anything on. It’s a jungle you’re staying in and remember we are in their territory, not the other way around, so just be aware.

Town Water: Town water goes off at times but I do have two large tanks above the house so if you hear that the water is off, please be conservative.
The sewer system in Sayulita is very delicate as it is in most parts of Mexico please dispose of TP in the trash container provided in the bathroom. ABSOLUTELY No feminine products should be flushed at anytime. If it is found that feminine products have been flushed and clog the system, you could be charged for extra damages of up to $200.

Noise: Sayulita is typical to many rural Mexican towns with roosters, dogs, cats and iguanas running free I cannot be responsible for any noise at all that is outside the property boundary of Casita Azulejos. Live music at night can sometimes be heard, there are vendors cruising the town in cars or trucks with loud speakers selling food and wares during the day, some times there is a festival, surf contest or other festivities, please check online to see when these events occur when planning your trip so you will know what to expect.

We do our best to keep the house dust free, however, Sayulita can be dusty due to the fact that most roads are dirt or cobblestone, the town is growing and there is construction throughout the town.

The internet is high speed “Mexico style”, it will most likely not be as fast as yours at home, it’s the best we can do.

If you are ok with all of the above then you should have no problem, if these things will bother you, plan accordingly and bring earplugs or whatever you need.

Surfing: If you are a beginner, please take a lesson. Most all the teachers in Sayulita are great. Tigre’s Surf School is my favorite. It is important to follow rules of surf etiquette and to respect the locals and tourists alike. If you don’t know where to surf, just ask at one of the surf stands on the beach.

Property Manager: Jewel (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (EMAIL HIDDEN) Please remember to tip generously, Jewel and Goyo, the property’s gardener work hard at keeping the place in great shape for you.

Additional service available: If you would like the fridge stocked before you arrive or if you want maid service, please contact Jewel a week in advance. The house will be cleaned weekly (included in cost of rental).
Wireless internet: The name and password is listed at the desk in the bedroom.

Laundry: There are towels and washcloths to be used at the house, and also a couple beach towels, if you take them to the beach, please bring them back. If you stay more than a week, house laundry will be included in the cleaning. Please help us be conservative. Whatever sheets and towels you want changed, please put them on the floor. If you would like linen changes more than once a week, please email Jewel in advance of your stay to coordinate additional cleaning and/or laundry. (There will be an extra fee)

Thanks so much for your help in keeping Casita Azulejos green! With all that said… I can always be reached at (EMAIL HIDDEN) Most importantly, have fun, relax, smile at the locals and if you like Sayulita, tell only nice people about it and come back soon!

VERY IMPORTANT: No children under 12 to be unattended at the pool. Swim at your own risk.

If you would like housekeeping more than once a week, please let us know in advance of your visit and we can plan accordingly. (extra fees will apply).

A/C VERY IMPORTANT Please only use the A/C when you are in the bedroom, it's very efficient and will cool the room down in less than 5 minutes. You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - I have not counted the stairs but I would guess around 15-20 stairs from the street
Potential for noise - You can hear live music from town at night, but it's usually good music! This is Mexico so there are dogs & roosters

About Belle Marko

I am a native of San Francisco, living just north in Marin County, California. I grew up hearing my mother tell tales of living in Mexico and going to art school in Guadalajara during the 50's, it always sounded so romantic and adventurous. I guess it got into my blood somehow.

Today, I am a painting contractor with a degree in fine art and interior design. I too now have that special place in Mexico that I call my home away from home. I love to surf and swim in the warm water of Sayulita or the cool rivers of California.

I enjoy doing improvements each time I visit my home in Mexico as much as enjoy my life in California, I'd say I have the best of both worlds.

I purchased this house in 2004
When I first stepped out of the jeep in the pouring rain in 2000 onto the plaza of Sayulita, It hit me - I had to have a place here, it instantly felt familiar. I later had a conversation on the beach with a man named Javier (d-2005) he explained to me that there are places on the earth that call to certain people, I knew this was one of those places for me. Never once have I had buyers remorse or any regret, Sayulita has a spirit about it that holds me, feeds me and is a place to call home. The people are special, the food is some of the best I've ever had, the sounds at night, the waves to surf, the fireflies in October, the interesting people that dare to come here all make a magic thing, I hope you feel it too.

What makes this house unique?
Most of all I love how I slow down to human-speed when I'm here in Sayulita, The outdoor shower and jungle garden are a few of my favorite things about Casita Azulejos, I love reading my book in the hammock or falling asleep on the beach and not even having to get up from my towel to find lunch, the tamale lady magically appears just as I begin to get hungry, I love the early morning light as it hits the front veranda or walking down to the beach for a dawn patrol surf session. I love the man down the street cooking chicken and singing, I even love that darn gas truck with it's obnoxious tune - or the roosters any time of the day (or night), I love my neighbors and friends that I've gotten to know over the years, I love all the music and the fish. I love walking to the graveyard, I love the way the Mexican people seem to celebrate anything! I love to hear little kids running in the plaza and laughing, I love snorkeling off the Marieta Islands or riding Manuel's horses to see the sunset on the beach or taking a boat with Tigre to a hard to find surf break in a secret cove, I love the random fireworks for no apparent reason or the rogue carnival that comes to town. I love the shrimp truck, the vegi truck, the plastic broom truck, the fruit truck, the recycle truck..I love doing Yoga up on the bluff under the palapa in Shelly's class - the iguanas and geckos and birds, but most of all I love the way Casita Azulejos feels like a home.
