Interaction with guests

ABOUT THE HOST
Gabriel’s goal is to make sure that you have an awesome experience in Rio and can focus on the important stuff, like your vacation - not worry about accommodation!
He will normally be around most days and very happy to give you advice and suggestions for getting around Rio and places to visit. Occasionally he has given guests short tours of Rio, but this is not a standard part of the package because of time constraints.
Born and raised at Leme neighborhood in Rio, the mystique of the Chapeu Mangueira’s Favela and the beauty of its people were always present in his life and imagination. As an adult he had the opportunity to work three years with children and families as a psychologist for a local organization called “Casa da Árvore”. As a result, he became completely involved with Chapéu Mangueira and decided to move from his comfortable apartment in Ipanema to live in the community. Always proud of this neighborhood, it is common to see him walking around with friends and relatives showing them the hospitality of local people, the delights of local cuisine, the trails and the panoramic views of the ocean and the rainforest. Working now at Abraço Carioca- Favela Hostel, his passionate and respectful relationship with Chapéu Mangueira has grown even more. His main target is to show our guests the authentic Carioca lifestyle through an unforgettable experience.
He’s proud of making the best Caipirinha in Town, come and judge for yourself.

The neighbourhood

NEIGHBORHOOD
Compared to other favelas from Rio, Chapéu Mangueira is the smallest favela in the south zone of the city (most touristic neighborhood) and has been pacified since 2008 by the government. So for the last 5 years it's been a really calm and peaceful place even safer than some of Rio's most touristic areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.

Getting around

MEET & GREET
Normally, we can come to the meeting point located at David’s Bar (very well-known restaurant in the community) and walk you to the Hostel. Let me know beforehand.

Other things to note

INTERNET
we know that when I travel, internet is not a luxury, it's a necessity - that's why my WiFi internet is 100% free – no extra or hidden fees.

LAUNDRY
You're welcome to wash your own clothes for R$10 reais.
LOCKER
We are happy to provide our guest with locker inside the room to safeguard your valuables.

LINEN & TOWELS
We provide both once during your stay. If you happen to stay longer than a week, We'll be happy to replace this with a fresh one.

Thank you so much Gabriel for letting me stay with you atop the coolest Favela I now know :) The place you call home is truly desirable and the views are simply breathtaking. When I return to Rio I certainly will come back to Abracao Carioca!!!

Gabriel was a very helpful host. He supported us every morning with buns and hints for planning the day to discover the city and was reachable by phone all the time. He took care about the security of his clients. I was there in a unsafe time of the favela. He was very careful and canceled following reservations. He offers all his clients to cancel without costs, but i stayed with some guests. I felt not unsecure in the favela, also at night, but don't forget that is really a favela. Nevertheless many tourists are there and there are many hostels. The view over copacobana is awesome and you can rest in a hangmatt. It needs more than 10 minutes to go up from Copacobana, but the view compensate that. The restrooms were clean. Everything was like it is described in AirBnb. But note the WiFi Internet was disrupted sometimes, if that is really a need, that could be a problem for you, but it is not his fault. If you want to take a flight by hang-glider or other stuff, you can ask Gabriel for some contacts, e.g. he knows Ricardo, he speaks English and he did a good job, when we have been flying together. All in all, I really recommend this nice place to stay in Rio. I have had a nice time there.

I stayed in Abraço Carioca just for four days, I met very nice people and the location was good with a great view of Leme and Copacabana. Perfect for people who'd like to have an experience in a favela without too many exigencies. The hostel wasn't too clean but It's something expected. Instead of this, even if I saw Gabriel for just a few, he has been very disposable and I would like to thank his friend who took care of us everyday! I recommend it!

Gaga was a friendly and attentive host. I did not get the chance to hang around him much during my 2 nights stay, but it was obvious he likes to make sure his guests enjoy their stay in Rio and he advised me on things to do.
