Our 2 bedroom, old stone cottage is in beautiful Upper Weardale, perfect for exploring the North Pennines, known as England's last wilderness and the 'roof of England'.

Located in Westgate village, the local pub micro-brewery serves evening meals (booking required).

Please be aware that due to the age and construction of the cottage, whereby stone floors are laid directly onto the earth, the humidity levels are higher than in modern houses, and you may notice a slight musty smell as a result.

The space
This is a very old traditional stone cottage, providing basic accommodation. So if you are looking for modern fittings and luxury, this is not the place for you. But if you are the adventurous type, think of it as your own private bunkhouse!

There is electric heating, BUT please be aware that in very cold weather, this kind of cottage is difficult to heat.

Whilst we make every effort to provide adequate heating, it is essential that if you book in the winter, you are willing and able to use the solid fuel appliances to adequately heat the house.
It can can sleep up to 5 persons - there is a double bedroom and a second bedroom with twin beds, plus a fold-out single bed for a child.

The cottage was originally two "one-up-one-down" miners' houses, now joined together. It retains many original features, and has two separate (fairly steep) staircases to the bedrooms. The lounge has a multi-fuel stove and the dining room features a solid fuel Rayburn cooker. A small but well equipped kitchen leads off the dining room; and also on the ground floor is the shower room with handbasin and toilet. The double bedroom also has its own ensuite toilet and handbasin.

Please be aware that the stone flagged ground floor can feel cold and therefore guests are advised to bring slippers.

Guest access
From the village there are many scenic walks, along the river Wear or up into the hills. We recommend the walk up into Slitt Woods, following the course of the Middlehope Burn stream. Details of this walk and many others can be found on the 'Discoverweardale' website.

Locally there is the village pub, where they brew their own 'Weard Ale' beer and serve evening meals. Further down the valley is the market town of Stanhope, for a range of shops and facilities, and the excellent Durham Dales centre, for tourist information, arts and crafts and cafe.

Other things to note
If you book a stay in the winter months, (October through April) you will need to be confident to run the solid fuel appliances - stove and/or Rayburn, to supplement the electric heating. Please note that in extreme cold conditions it can take some time to warm the place up, so if your stay is very short and the weather is very cold, you may not feel warm enough. However for hardy winter guests we provide plenty of logs and coal if you are happy to run the solid fuel appliances.

And don't forget your slippers!

Please note there are no food shops in Westgate village - the closest shop is the co-op in St John's Chapel, approximately 1.5 miles west. For more shops there is Stanhope, 5 miles east from Westgate.

The cottage is an old place, and may not provide the level of comfort that some guests like. If you like rustic authenticity and to get a feel for miners' lives in the 19th Century, this is the place for you. Otherwise, please think carefully before booking!

Location

Westgate in Weardale, Durham, United Kingdom

Westgate is a very quiet village, but is part of the wider Weardale community of small towns, villages and farms. The walking around the area is fantastic, and the lead mining history of the area adds an additional layer of historical interest to a beautiful and rugged area. Upper Weardale is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is also within the geopark, having its own unique geology.
