The space

Sailfish' is a one bedroom (with downstairs & upstairs studio) home located on the West Meadow of The Sea Ranch. The Sea Ranch is about one hundred miles north of San Francisco and about 55 miles south of Mendocino.
This ten mile stretch of land is an internationally famous vacation spot known for blending architecture with nature. The land consists of majestic bluff tops and accessible sandy beaches, coastal ocean meadows and redwood forested hillsides of approximately 3500 acres. Fifty percent of the land is dedicated to open space, which is shared by all property owners and guests. The Sea Ranch concept is to”live lightly on the land”, with landscape playing a major role in housing design. Architectural review takes place through The Sea Ranch Design Department; There are currently 1804 homes (6/2017). Many activities are available, such as to play a round of golf on a Scottish-style course, hike on the fifty miles of maintained trails, fish, swim, whale watch or kayak. The Sea Ranch has 3 recreational centers, each with a tennis court, a pool and sauna. The Sea Ranch also has a dog park, children's playground called 'One Eyed Jacks' and equestrian barns (no rentals but will board horses for visitors). The nearby town of Gualala provides restaurants, supermarkets, medical facilities and other amenities. For More Information on 'The Ranch' please see the website link ((URL HIDDEN)

'Sailfish' was built in 2002 with the idea of bringing a sailboat to land. It is a unique structure architecturally and has the ultimate privacy from the 'commons (open space)' that exist on three sides. It perches on the side of a slope and has views down & across a thicket of vegetation to the rocky shore beyond . 'Sailfish' (Gilbert House) was one of approximately thirty homes featured in 'The Sea Ranch', a book written by Donlyn Lyndon & Jim Alinder, (2004). It is also included in the 2013 edition entitled, 'The Sea Ranch:Fifty years of Architecture, Place and Community on the Northern California Coast'. The houses they chose to include in this 300 page book demonstrate the Sea Ranch 'vision'. 'Sailfish' was described in it as a 'diminutive shingle castle'. The 2004 edition sits on a shelf in the bedroom and the 2013 edition sits on the blue shelf in the entry, so please take a look. Trail access is just below the house . . . some trails are designated for biking and horseback riding. TSR trails map is also available for guests and will be found in the Guest binder on the blue entry shelf. From the house you can walk to Stengel beach in about 10 minutes and to Ohlson Recreation Center in about 15 minutes. 'Sailfish' has many artistic touches throughout and includes original mosaic wall murals. For those interested in preparing gourmet meals, it has a fully-equipped galley kitchen. The downstairs area is open to the loft-style bedroom above, so the house is ideal for a couple and a well-mannered dog, not for young children. Adjoining the bedroom through a pocket door on the other side of the bathroom is a studio space with a twin size pull out bed. 'Sailfish' has a 'No Shoes Rule'.

An addition was added in August of 2016 that includes an owners' studio and one car garage. The existing deck was expanded and now connects to the new addition. The new deck offers additional outdoor dining space and room to relax on 2 chaise lounges. The owners' studio will not be available to guests (vacant during any rental stay). The new garage houses the bar-b-que and washer & dryer and a key for entry will be available.

'Sailfish' has been described by previous rental guests as . . .
'A special place for re-awakening the senses and the passion that lies within each of us, all too often submerged under the pressures of day-to-day life. A retreat designed & conceived, it seems, for lovers like us to know each other a bit more, surrounded by all that nature has to offer along this spectacular coast.' (Don & Brigitte)
'We have stayed in many places up here and yours is one of the best maintained and equipped that we've had the pleasure of renting. We loved the clever use of interior & exterior space and would recommend this house to other couples'. (Shawn, Susie & Ruby, the dog)

Guest access

Guests will be able to access the main home, carport and deck with enclosed courtyard and fenced yard. The detached studio is owner use only (not occupied during guest stay). There is a key in the house for the garage. The washer & dryer, BBQ is located in the garage. Your booking also includes access to The Sea Ranch homeowners' Association recreation areas with tennis courts, swimming pools, saunas, trails (both bike, horseback and walking). The closest, Ohlsen Center, is only about a ten minute walk from Sailfish. (One night complementary for a seven night booking.)

Interaction with guests

I prefer to speak with potential guests prior to booking so that I can answer any questions.

We stayed at Sailfish in Sea Ranch this last weekend and had a wonderful time. Our short vacation was long overdue and we weren't really expecting to completely unwind and relax. However, Christine's care and attention in providing a charming, comfortable and inviting place to stay helped us to very quickly get in to the spirit of the vacation and relax and unwind. Sailfish is a lovely home with a beautiful view of the ocean. The layout of the space is perfect and the decor is soothing and calming. The open living room, kitchen and dining area open up on to the wrap around deck where there are lounge beds, a dining table and hot tub. There is also a small fenced in garden below the deck where our dog could roam and take care of any pressing business before going out on a walk. There is also a delightful private balcony with a table off the bedroom upstairs. Perfect for a morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. Christine has gone to great lengths to ensure that your stay will be enjoyable and fun. Everything you need for your stay is provided for and all the appliances and cookware are very good quality. We were very impressed with not only what Christine supplied but in how she organized everything to make it easy to find and get to. The guest folder gave us all the instructions for everything and included passes for parking and the Sea Ranch recreation facilities. We recommend Sailfish very highly if you are thinking of staying at Sea Ranch. I wish we were back there now.

Christine's place far exceeded our expectations. It was clean, beautifully decorated and probably the best in terms of airbnb. She had anything you could possibly need and it was a great stay. Can't wait to return. I want to bring my pup next time as it's all fenced in so perfect for a 4 legged friend.

In need of R & R, we found Christine's beautiful Sailfish Retreat in Sea Ranch to be the perfect fit. From our first contact with Christine, we found her to be responsive, welcoming, generous and informative. Upon arrival, we were blown away! The house is meticulously clean, thoughtfully designed and well-edquiped with too many extra touches to describe in detail. Suffice it to say, we had everything we needed and more. The kitchen is better equipped than our own. Entertainment is at the ready with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc. on the main, big screen TV and the WiFi was completely reliable. The hot tub and BBQ made for relaxing and delicious evenings outdoors - at the table or relaxing on the luxurious lounge chairs. The amazing view of the ocean kept our attention throughout our stay. The upstairs balcony is a perfect place for eating breakfast or reading while enjoying the sea breeze and ocean view - also great for stargazing! The fully equipped office with printer was an unexpected bonus. Christine's extraordinary artwork fills the home with beauty and completes the seaside theme present throughout. Sea Ranch itself has trails galore, too many beaches to count, pools to swim in, wildlife to watch, bike trails to ride on and plenty of quiet time for just the two of us. Nearby, the market in Gualala has everything you need and an exceptional meat department (great ribeyes for the BBQ). Perfect place for two, but room for three. On a personal note, Sailfish provided a memorable, comforting place to spend our last vacation with our sweetest of dogs, Riley - the most human little Aussie we've been privileged to know and love for over 13 years. We've had to say goodbye to him now, so the memories we made at Sailfish are and always will be especially fond. With our great appreciation to our host Christine, Tom and MJ
