Give yourself a break from it all in a real Irish country home which overlooks Lough Ree.

It’s a basic cottage that boasts a very large garden with wrought iron gates - which makes it a safe place for children to run around. It is a perfect location for families or friends to share.

We are close to Glasson Hotel (2min drive) and Glasson Village (5min drive). Our rural idyll is perfect for a number of situations including family holidays, golfing, fishing, boating, walking.

The space

Our place is a three bedroom cottage and has two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. The third bedroom has bunk beds and a 4 foot pull out sofa bed which would fit one adult or two children. There is also a separate toilet and shower.

The kitchen is a basic country kitchen. *Please note: there is no dishwasher. There is a washing machine in the utility room available for guests use. The living room is also small (cottage!) and has magnificent views overlooking the lake. Any day is a pleasure here. There is a fireplace for rainy days or cosy nights. We have WI-Fi, Sky TV, and a smart TV where you can watch Netflix etc .

The decor is country cottage, with many antiques and we do not have much in the way of mod cons. It has been recently redecorated and is very comfortable for a relaxing time away from the everyday hustle and bustle of life.

We live in the middle of farming country so the fields around the house are farmed with cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks etc. You will often see cattle grazing in the field in front of the house or hear sheep behind us.

The local area has plenty of great walks with Portlick Amenity Area only 2km away, where there are lovely walks through the woods around the lake. There is plenty of wildlife to be spotted or heard in the woods, and it is a carpet of bluebells in the spring.

There are also the options of boating or fishing with May fly fishing on Lough Ree being hugely popular with fishermen around the world. There are also plenty of horse riding options in the area and golfing in Glasson Country House Hotel which is a 2 minute drive away.

The local picturesque village of Glasson, which is only a five minute drive away, punches well above its weight when it comes to cuisine: you have choices of the award winning Villager bar and restaurant in the middle of the village, or the well-known and much loved Grogan’s bar and restaurant just across the road. The Village Inn restaurant is great for a Sunday roast and often has specials featured on the menu. And we also have the award winning Wineport Lodge, which lies nestled among the reeds with beautiful lake views. Many will know this restaurant from the TV series ‘The Restaurant’.

Going the other direction and only a two minute drive from the cottage are the Killinure Chalets, (bar and restaurant - open April to October) which is locally famous for its steaks and its somewhat relaxed service and setting: don’t expect to eat in a hurry but as we say in Ireland, “the craic is mighty”.

The river Shannon flows south of the lake (Lough Ree) through the town of Athlone. Athlone is a substantial town and has everything on offer shopping wise. Visit Athlone castle or take a trip on the Viking boat up river to Hodson Bay or south to the monastic settlement of Clonmacnois. Savor a pint of Guinness in the famous Sean’s Bar which is in the left bank area overlooking the river - right beside the castle and where the Viking boat leaves from. There are a great range of excellent restaurants in Athlone including the Fatted Calf, Thyme and The Left Bank. Athlone town is only 12 km from the cottage or a 15minute drive.

Guest access

All the house and grounds are available for your stay. There is plenty of parking for any amount of cars.

Interaction with guests

We want you to have an enjoyable stay while you are our guests. We are available by phone any time and can usually come to the cottage fairly quickly should any problem occur. If we can not make it, we have friends in the area who would be able to help.

Stunning lake and sunset views from a lovely house in a rural location with a huge garden for the children to play in, and a barbecue area for al fresco meals. Highly attentive host who was in contact throughout our stay. If you like to get away from busy towns and television, but still have the convenience of wifi and nearby shops (brand new Supavalue on way into Athlone is very good), then this would be a good place to consider for a stay. As regular visitors to the Midlands, we will certainly do so next time we are over.

Very enjoyable trip to the midlands, the house was a very handy location to explore the area. The views of the lake were lovely to wake up to.

Fiona and Philip are the perfect hosts, they just leave you speechless as to how you can describe them. They respond in minutes for any query even before booking, and they made sure my whole family is happy with them. The place is huge and brilliant for the kids, a car is very recommended to getting around(Although the Taxi from Athlone is a 20 Euro and the shop is not so far away). This is the perfect family retreat home, with a fantastic Barbecue place and a sight that would leave anyone lost for words. The lake nearby for a small picnic and explorations. It is an absolute blast over there, I'd definitely recommend at least a week over there. Everyone loved the host(Fiona even played with the kids when she visited a bit, which was so nice of her) but my mother specifically asked that on their next trip, that we would ask Fiona and Philip to rent their place for a month. That is how much everyone enjoyed it, I am even tempted to not say that as I wouldn't want the place to be fully rented for next time. :P But, they were so helpful and if you rent with them, you will know what I mean by perfect hosts. :) Also, a strong WiFi there helped a lot during quiet nights, haha! :)

Communication was very easy using whatsup. We managed to setup the heating as we got 11°C the 31st july. We really enjoyed the house as the weather was awful. The walk around Portlick is very nice and the food at Villager was just great.

We are a married couple and love travel of all sorts whether it's a short city break or a longer and more exotic break. When we go to a city we love to stay in an apartment as opposed to a hotel. We like to get to know the local people and get local tips when we stay in a new place. One of our favorite destinations was Guatemala where we were immersed in the traditions and foods of the local people.

We love our food, love good wines, good company and are both competent cooks. I love to finish a good meal with 4 drinks in front of me: a tasty wine, a quality water, an after dinner liqueur and an espresso - bliss!!

We like to collect art and antiques and dabble in a bit of furniture restoration and renovation.

We used to go out frequently but are now older (maybe not wiser) and spend time now on other pursuits - walking, furniture restoration, traveling, playing bridge (is that sad?!).
