This is a private home in an old safe neighbourhood of Kolkata. It is conveniently located being about 6 km from the airport and also centrally placed from both the two main railway terminuses (Howrah 10 km approx.and Sealdah 8 km approx.) of the city. Metro is also nearby and accessible.

The space

The room is located at a private corner of the house with easy access to the main gates. It opens to the veranda overlooking our front garden. It is airy and generally filled with natural light. It comes with a private bathroom with toiletries.
The double bed will accommodate two adults comfortably. An almirah for wardrobe is provided.

Our home is located in a safe and friendly neighbourhood with easy access to bazaars, general stores, medicine shops, and even dispensaries with doctors on call for medical emergencies. Eateries of all kinds and taste can be found practically at all nooks and corners. If you have a sweet tooth, then sweet shops, for which Kolkata is acclaimed, can be found almost at our doorstop.
Our neighbourhood also boasts of parks and walk ways around ponds and along canals for relaxing morning or evening walks.
The notable advantage of this listing, apart from all of the above, is its location. From here it is easy to access the whole of the city by all forms of transport (metro, local bus, local taxi and on-line taxi services) and vice- versa, not to mention airport and the railway stations being quite near as mentioned before.
Maps to the city would be provided on request.

Guest access

Guests would have access to our common sitting and dining area, the front veranda, as well as our roof terrace overlooking our backyard lined with mango and coconut trees. If you visit us during mango season you might be lucky to have a taste of the king of fruits growing on our trees only!
The roof terrace can also be made available for sun-drying clothes.

Interaction with guests

Guests are most welcome to seek us out on any necessary matter. We would be available 24X7.
We as a family would like to get to know those who visit us and the beautiful places they come from. Thus if anyone is interested to extend one’s experience of a homestay into more than just renting a room but rather use the opportunity to live with a local family, learn more about the local culture and experience the warmth of our family, they are most welcome.
But if you are a private person then your privacy would surely be respected.

Other things to note

We are an established, reputed family of good standing in our neighbourhood and are closely engaged in efforts to uplift the society around us. We are associated with various forms of social work by legacy and likeminded guests are welcome to share in our experiences.
We are a family who are also interested in practicing the ancient Indian tradition of yoga and meditation. We would be more than happy to introduce our interested guests to such Indian customs.

Response from Avik:
Unfortunately, Claire and Schalk could not stay with us as their train was delayed hugely. However, from the very cordial exchanges we had all along I was pretty certain they would have been nice guests.

We are a family of five living in this neighbourhood for over 60 years now, with our home being one of the first 'brick and mortar' constructions of the locality. We are well known among our neighbours to be kind and hospitable and enjoy a healthy reputation among the locals. We love to travel and host travellers as well as exchanging experiences and cultural ideas.

The head of the family is my father Prabir, a brilliant mechanical engineer who passed out from IIT Kharagpur in the late sixties and then went to the UK for his higher studies. After working in various reputed industries in India and abroad, he started a manufacturing business of engineering products. Our workshop is in the ground floor of our house only. For anyone interested in engineering stuff, we can definitely engage in lively conversations and also give you a tour of our workshop.

The person in charge of all matters regarding our home is my mother Jaba. Having passed out from Rabindranath Tagore’s Santiniketan, she has a unique understanding of life and is a window to our culture specially if seen through the lenses of Tagore’s songs, which are an intimate part of a Bengali’s life. She is a wonderful cook and would be more than happy to share a few tips on Indian/Bengali cooking. She also looks after the day to day affairs of our NGO, which was started by my grandfather about 70 years back.

I am a production engineer from Pune University, a city which also happens to be my birthplace. Apart from being a full-time partner in our family business, I pursue various other engagements like reading (mostly management, technology, spirituality), music, salsa dancing, travelling, doing social work and engaging in deep conversations with people.

An apprentice to managing the household is my wife Shrimoyee, a professor in History in a reputed College in Kolkata. If you are a history buff or simply interested to know the city you are visiting, she would be the go to person. This is more so because she did her doctoral thesis on early colonial Calcutta.

Last but not the least, the youngest and the most important member of our family is my daughter Averi (pet name Anandi). All of 5 years old she is a friendly child who loves to interact with people and enjoys a good company.
