My husband and I live in this old sea captain's house on 2 acres at the water's edge, which accommodates 8 guests in 5 rooms: Garden View $75-1 twin bed; Walter's Comfy Room for 2 $150-1 King or 2 Twins, & chaise; Captain's Room $125-full bed & love seat; J's Cozy Room for 1 or 2/full-$100 for 2, $75 for 1; C's Tuck-away Room for 1/twin-$63. The rooms share a bathroom on the second floor of the house, a first-floor lav, and a private outside shower. Guests have use of our kitchen.

The space

Our home, one of the Stone Sloop Captains' houses built in the mid-1800s, is situated on a lovely property in walking distance of the CTC Ferry, Stone Wharf, beach, museum, library, restaurants, and store. Our property is smoke-free, inside and out, but feel free to bring along your favorite beverage to sip while you sit on the back bank and watch the birds and boats or just relax in the hammock. There are flowers and trees, two cats that live in the owner's quarters, and a large white poodle to add to your enjoyment.

We have beds for a total of 8 guests in 5 rooms (3 two person rooms and 2 one person rooms) on the second floor of the original sea captain's house. When booking all 5 rooms, the cost is $500 per night. If you wish to rent specific rooms separately, each is listed separately on its own Airbnb page.

Two 2-person rooms and one 1-person room have total privacy. The two rooms, adjacent to the Captain's Room, are "Pullman" style, similar to a train in that you must walk through one room to get to the next. The Captain's Pullman suite is perfect for a family or close friends. The first two rooms have full-size beds. The third room has a twin size bed and access to the secondary staircase to the first floor. All beds in our home have memory foam toppers, plush mattress pads and at least 400 count cotton sheets.

The rooms, on the original second floor, share a bathroom centrally located at the top of the main staircase. The outside shower (available April - October), private and constructed with blue stone, and a first floor lav are also available to guests to help streamline readying for scheduled events.

Guest access

Guests have use of our public rooms and grounds, including the "back bank", which is a great place for sitting and sipping while watching egrets, herons, belted king fishers and the MV Islander's comings and goings. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the kitchen, dining room or backyard, depending on guest preference and weather. Dietary preferences and requirements are taken into consideration when I'm informed in advance.

Guests may use our kitchen, bring food to prepare, order a food delivery from Whole Foods in advance of arrival, pick up prepared foods or groceries on Island, or order fresh caught lobster directly from a local lobsterman. If you'd like, accomplished professional chefs and gourmet cooks, who make their home on the Island, may be available to cook up a special meal for you. Fresh lobster is available from local lobstermen throughout the year if you'd like a traditional steamed lobster dinner. Breakfast foods and supplies are available, let me know how I can help you manage lunch and dinners.

Groceries can be purchased from Doughty's Island Market, open all year and just a short walk down the South Road, but you'll find frozen meats, not fresh. Doughty's is also a great place to pick up a sandwich, a slice of pizza, a cup of coffee and if you're lucky - Julie's award winning chili or beef stew. It's closed on Wednesdays except during the busy summer season.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. Our formal living room doubles as our media room with a 10' screen and surround sound. There are water color paints and art paper, board games, chess and playing cards, as well as many books for our guests enjoyment. Relax in the sunroom, put your feet up and take a nap.

Guests may use our washer and dryer and laundry supplies following my "tutorial".

Interaction with guests

Our home is spacious and provides opportunity for quiet privacy as well as camaraderie. I follow my guests' lead. I can move about the house quietly, without intruding or comfortably interact with guests. Most guests sit back, relax and make themselves at home. I'm always available to answer questions or tend to concerns.

Other things to note

Chebeague Island is all about community, it is not necessarily a tourist destination. If you're looking for quaint shops and cafes, check out the Old Port in Portland before or after you visit Chebeague. Many artists and craftsmen make their home on Chebeague Island. I will be happy to organize a personal studio tour for you if you are interested in viewing paintings, sculptures, wooden bowls and vases, wooden carvings and signs, hand made toys, original jewelry, and more.

Another helpful link is our island's website at www chebeague org ... it will give you a feel for the community and access to links to island organizations, businesses and events.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Holt's home. Having stayed there as children, it was very cool to come back. We would definitely stay here again. The Holts were so hospitable! We were provided with everything we needed as well as transportation to and from the ferry.

Mary was a very kind host and accommodated last minute changes in our party size which was greatly appreciated. Unfortunately however there were mismatched expectations between the owner and my group. The listing was very unclear to me that the owners live in the house and would be with us for our stay. I had thought by renting the full capacity (8 people), I had rented the entire house but in fact only rented the sleeping quarters on the 2nd floor. It was a very atypical Airbnb experience for me and my group. Additionally the owners were extremely particular about their home (for example, there were instructions for how to clean dishes, no shoes were allowed to be worn inside the house, certain drinking glasses were off limits, pans could only be heated to a certain temperature etc.) The amount of instructions were hard to keep up with and made my group feel uncomfortable and stressed.

Catherine, this is only the second time in four years of renting rooms through Airbnb that the booking individual did not thoroughly read our listing. Our rental space is listed as "private room" not "entire place". Throughout the listing “our home” is repeated several times. All following notes are copied directly from our listing: In the initial summary: “Guests have use of the kitchen.” In Guest access section: Guests have use of our public rooms and grounds, … Guests may use our kitchen, … Our formal living room doubles as our media room with a 10' screen and surround sound. Response from Mary:
Kathy, it's extremely important to carefully read an Airbnb listing so that you are fully aware of what to expect. I did appreciate that you shared you had not read our listing before you booked our Rooms for 8 or before your arrival. As clearly noted in our listing, three of the rooms are Pullman style and fitting for a family or close friends.

This was a first for our entire family, my wife and my self along with our daughters there significant others and our 2 year old grandson, for this type of vacation together. When I contacted Mary she was wonderful at helping work out all the logistics from who would fit best were to helping with the reservations. The house is everything it shows on the site , wonderful rooms, a great kitchen and lots of space in the yard down to the shore. A few of us even got to catch a nap here or there in the hammock at the waters edge. They were excellent at making sure we could get around on the Island with Mary taking us down to the Musem and letting everyone look aroundon Suday morning. Mary & John seemed to always be avaliable when needed and always willing to help with things like we're to get fresh lobsters for dinner at locals cost. We were extremely sad to leave but again they made it easy with 7 of us we needed extra help and 2 cars to get to the wharf. I am very sure we will be back and would recommend it to anyone as the quite of the Island lends to some very relaxing days.

Mary and John take great pride in their home and in being thorough, thoughtful hosts. We were a group of eight in our late 20s and early 30s looking for a low-key but fun weekend in Maine. John and Mary set the expectations early in the trip and shared the house rules from the beginning, but it was hard to ensure that all eight of us followed suit at all times. We did our best to be clean and respectful, and overall it was a wonderful experience. The property and area are absolutely beautiful, and there is no shortage of charm or scenic views. John and Mary picked us up from the ferry and were in communication throughout the weekend, offering assistance through text message. They gave us the number to order fresh lobsters, and we had an incredible feast. We rode their bikes and used the garage with a pool table, and we lounged in the spacious sun room full of art and antiquities. The home is chock full of rich history, and we enjoyed learning about John and Mary and their families. Chebeague is a hidden gem among Maine's many destinations, and John and Mary's home is a special experience for the right guests. We are very grateful to have had the opportunity for such a sunny, relaxing weekend to unplug.

I enjoy sharing time with friends, family and guests. Whether gathered in the kitchen or seated around our dining table, I'm energized by conversations that evolve and find satisfaction in knowing that folks are able to comfortably share ideas and experiences. I'm pretty easy going and welcome help when offered. I'm not easily frazzled by large groups of visitors. I love to laugh and my husband and I have many interests, including travel, visiting museums, viewing architecture, attending theater and cultural events, volunteering with community organizations, walking, biking, sailing and eating tasty food.
