Barrea is a small village in Abruzzo, perched on a rocky mountain spur. An important tourist resort, it is one of the main centers of the Abruzzo National Park, Lazio and Molise. An ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts, a dense network of trails starts from its town centre that leads to the main attractions of the area, including: Lake Vivo, Lake Pantaniello, Lake Barrea, and the Resuni refuge. Very suggestive is the old town that still preserves the traces of an ancient past in which it was used as a frame for defensive purposes. The cobblestone streets, stone houses, ancient churches and palaces surrounded by a defensive belt give it a strongly traditional character. The gastronomic tradition of Barrea is linked to the flavours of Abruzzo cuisine, its simple and genuine ingredients offered by nature. Like the goldsmith, a wild spinach that grows in fenced fields where the flocks are kept. It is cooked as soup with beans or as a seasoning for dumplings of water and flour.
The goldsmith's festival, organized on August 13 in the panoramic square of Mammarino, is a unique opportunity to taste one of the main typical products of Barrea.

The Sunday following August the Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated: the community goes in procession to the ancient Church of S. Maria della Baja for liturgical functions and, during the afternoon, returns to the parish church.
