I have been using Airbnb for a long time. I have loved the places I have stayed at and have rented both entire places and rooms. I have never had such a terrible experience as a guest. I was told me at 10:3pm, the night of my stay, that there would be cleaners coming early (no specific time given) and that they would need access to the room at 10. Marco failed to disclose this info at check in or during the reservation process. I was up at 8:30, the following morning, from the sounds of cleaning and conversation. It made no sense to me to have people scheduled to clean the house while paying guests are in the house pre-check out. I asked if the room could be cleaned after my noon checkout and that request was denied.
Access to the house was also incredibly insecure. This neighbor hood is lovely but the idea that there was a box in clear view with a key to the house felt unsafe. I was told at check in to enter the unlocked screen porch and grab the spare key from a domino box on a table. A longer term resident told us she would lock the door after I struggled with the lock. The front door did not lock when I came in later that night after repeated attempts with the bottom lock. This made me very uneasy. Finally, the guests who preceded me left the front door wide open while my friend went to the store and I slept. Thankfully it was a short trip for her.
Also once the cleaning began, we lost access to rhe bathroom.
Marco was downstairs when my friend and I left around 11am. He was polite and lying on the coach. I told him about my negative experience and he tried to mansplain what AIRBNB was and that it was not a hotel. We left and I wrote him to him requesting a refund. He responded immediately denying any wrongdoing and refusing my request. I spoke with a lovely AIRBNB employee who listened and reached out to Marco. He said he would refund $10 for my perceived inconvenience. He also also asked me to not write a review and threatened me with a negative review if I did. I know what kind of guest I am so I am not concerned with his lies and threats.
It's a shame, I liked his home. The $65 (with fees) was a great price but buyer beware; it's not worth the bargain.
