Neighbourhood highlights

We are in the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood, a residential area of stately brick houses and apartment buildings built shortly after the 1904 World's Fair. Our house dates from 1911. The neighborhood is rated the safest in the city and is known as one of the most diverse, vital and livable areas in St. Louis, sitting in the thriving central corridor near new tech development, the downtown, Soulard to the south and just east of St. Louis County. We are just a few blocks from the main campus of Washington University, University City and a 10-minute drive to downtown Clayton, a modern suburb just to our west.

The Pageant and Delmar Hall are just a two block walk on the Delmar Loop. Further down the street is Blueberry Hill with its famed Duck Room, where Chuck Berry played every month for years. The Loop, rated one of America's great streets, also features a newly expanded independent bookstore, a bowling alley, independent retail shops of all kinds, a rooftop bar at the Moonrise Hotel and restaurants for every taste.

Also in walking or biking distance is Forest Park, where you find trails, three free museums in (St. Louis Museum, Missouri History Museum and Kemper Museum), a boathouse, a free world-class zoo, an outdoor theater, tennis courts, three nine-hole golf courses, all in a beautiful setting that was once the 1904 World's Fair grounds.

And don’t forget to explore the Central West End, another bustling St. Louis neighborhood where you’ll find movies, bars, restaurants and music clubs in an historic setting.

Outside our neighborhood the city is packed with attractions. We have easy Metro access to the Gateway Arch, the Arch Shop and Museum and the new walkway along the Mississippi River, the Dome at America’s Center for conventions and concerts, the National Blues Museum, Busch Stadium and the St. Louis Cardinals, Ballpark Village, and the new St. Louis Wheel and Aquarium at the historic, remodeled Union Station. A major league soccer team is due in 2023 in a new downtown stadium right on the Metro line.

From our house you can easily get to Barnes-Jewish Medical Center, Washington University Medical Center, Saint Louis Medical Center, Children's Hospital, SSM St. Mary's Hospital and Mercy Hospital.

Don’t forget to visit the Anhauser Busch St. Louis Brewery (North American headquarters for the world’s biggest brewer) and see the Clydesdales, have a free beer and take a tour. For the kids there is the Magic House, the Citygarden fountain (for some summer splashing) and the City Museum. Other attractions include the Museum of Relgious Art at St. Louis University, the spectacular Central Basilica, the Pulitzer Arts Center, the Old Courthouse (now connected to the Arch by a quiet park). And don’t forget to get a dose of music history at the Scott Jopklin House.

There’s so much to do you will want to visit us more than once!

My wife Marilyn and I are retired from careers in journalism and education. We were also owners/operators of a restaurant/music club. We discovered AirBnB while travelling and found our house to be a great hosting match with the idea of “live like a local.” There’s much to see and do in St. Louis and we know a lot about music and art and food.
