My comfortable houseboat situated in the city centre, perfect to explore York!

The space

Converted from a traditional working boat, "Cranbridge" is right in the middle of York's historic & vibrant centre but totally quiet at night. Perfect for couples. (I can provide a double airbed in the living room which means 4 people can stay but access to the bathroom is through the living room so this would not be a private room as the main bedroom is)! If you're thinking of booking for 4 people please do get in touch first as I'd hate for you to be disappointed when you arrive!

Facilities
The 3 bar power shower is great! not at all what you'd expect on a boat.
The boat is fully central heated so if the great British weather lets you down, at least you'll be toasty warm in here.

This is an old working boat, so isn't a show house! I do keep the place looking nice but If you expect the Park Lane Hilton, better book there!

There's on street parking by the boat, its residents only but I can give you a permit which covers the day you arrive and up to 10am the next day

Guest access

You're welcome to use my printer & wifi but as I use my iMac as a recording studio, I'd prefer it if you didn't use that.

Please feel free to help yourself to breakfast cereals, milk tea/coffee

There's a microwave, small grill oven, electric hob, toaster, kettle, fridge etc so you can cook if you want to.

I don't have normal terrestrial TV so if you need your fix of Eastenders, best record it! I do have a TV which I use to watch movies via a chromecast (I'll show you how it works if you're not familiar) So if you have Netflix or Sky and you can access them from your phone of tablet then you can watch them on my TV. *I'm told Amazon prime doesn't work on Chromecast because Amazon don't get on with (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN), but am happy to be proved wrong!

Interaction with guests

I'll usually be there to show you round the boat when you arrive, but if I can't be there the keys will be in a key box on the door & I'll let you have the current code before you arrive.

If you need tips on good restaurants, bars, nightlife etc I'm your man. Particularly live music which is my passion.
This is my home, so I will be in & out (if I'm not away in some foreign place bringing the rock music to the heathen masses).

Other things to note

Be aware that the entrance gangway is steep and the stairs down into the boat have limited headroom, so if you are unsteady on your feet or have trouble bending down then this isn't for you.
Also there are no guard rails around the boat so BE AWARE, DON'T FALL IN THE RIVER! That said the access into the boat from the road is perfectly safe.

I'll be around to help with carrying luggage but if you can't manage your bags up & down stairs then you should probably look for something with easier access.

This houseboat is in an excellent location for exploring York and,as in our case, as a base for York Races. It is s real home from home and is far more cosy than a drab hotel room! Martin is a great host making you very welcome and offering tips if required (he put us into a fab Chinese restaurant). If you are after all the bells and whistles of a hotel or up market b&b this is probably not for you - but you would be missing out on a fabulous experience!

If you have even an idle curiosity about staying on a boat, this is probably the listing for you: I think you would be hard pressed to find a better experience. The host was warm and personable, helpful and a joy to talk to, especially about local music. York's water ways are quite peaceful and the roads leading up to the mooring equally so, making the return each evening a relaxing and wonderful perk to staying in such a storied city. Definitely do heed the information in the listing, the ramp and steps down are exactly as described! Should be no problem for someone who's even vaguely spry though. Also, docks and boats are a great habitat for spiders so expect to see quite a few, and although they are almost all living outside the boat, if you're very arachnophobic then that should probably be a consideration. If we had the opportunity to do so, we would definitely seek to stay here again in the future; everyone we've talked to about the experience has been fascinated, and being able to return to a warm, comfortable and quiet space really allowed us fit so much more into our holiday. We'll remember it fondly and talk about it for a long time.

Very unique experience to stay in a boat house. The host is very thoughtful and helpful as well. Will definitely stay there again if I'm visiting!

Stepping aboard this house boat, we instantly fell in love with the unique, quirky touches, the gentle swaying feel of the river and of course the spectacular views. The location is perfect - so central and the boat is clean and tidy with loads of handy facilities (teas, coffee, milk; much appreciated and unforgettable to have a morning cuppa up on deck in the early sunshine - great start to a day!) The communication with Martin was fantastic, in both his friendliness and readiness to help in any situation :-) we really hope to be back soon! Thanks for letting us experience true house boat living!
