Location

Edge Hill, Queensland, Australia

EDGE HILL is the oldest, most sought after - long established & leafy suburb in Cairns - first to be settled in Cairns due to its Hill side views to catch the evening breezes (no air con or fans in those days), dry land and its early access to all year round Fresh water (see Centenary Lakes) a lot of the classic high set wooden Queenslander houses where built and settled here in the early 1940's and lot remain well maintained in tropical Garden settings along streets named after city Mayors and Doctors who also tended to settle in the area being identified (as it still is) one of the Best in Cairns with 10 minutes into the CBD as well as International Airport - the Greenest Oldest Best Suburb also boasts the CAIRNS BOTANIC GARDENS just 10 minutes walking distance - Flecker Botanical Gardens is a heritage-listed botanic garden at Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, Cairns. It was built from 1886 to 1960s. It is now known as Cairns Botanic Gardens, and TANKs ART CENTRE - Pacific War led to the construction of these 3 concrete fuel tanks, completed for the Royal Australian Navy in 1944, and carefully camouflaged under the rainforest shroud of Mount Whitfield to protect them from enemy eyes. The tanks held crude type furnace oil and pumped it through an underground, gravity fed pipeline to a fuelling jetty in Trinity Inlet. The Australian Navy used the Tanks for refuelling Australian and visiting American and British ships right up until their decommissioning in 1987. Now a Community, Visual & Performing Arts Space. 1991 saw major redevelopment to expand the area and broaden the footprint of the Botanic Gardens into a highly attractive, environmental parkland and Visitor Centre. The precinct is a must-see destination for the best in tropical botanical and cultural experiences of the region including TANKS ART CENTRE MARKETS - Sunday Markets, held on the last Sunday of every month from April to November.
Tanks Monthly Markets are a unique slice of cultural life in the tropics and a must-do event on the Cairns calendar.
Everyone is invited to wander our leafy promenade, explore the site and take in the full complement of stallholders offering a blend of quality local art, craft, produce, vintage clothing, collectables and local natural health products. Plus, enjoy local musicians, food and refreshments on this free, family fun day. COST: Free TIME: 9am – 2pm VENUE: Tanks Arts Centre
Please note: This event is always popular. If you can’t find a park, try Greenslopes Street and enjoy a stress-free walk through Centenary Lakes.
