Description

The space

A favorite room for many over time, this lovely room really does seem to warmly embrace you when you enter. It's cozy enough without being teeny & gracious enough without being stuffy. It has a nice bright private bathroom with a very good shower & tub and a gas fireplace to keep cozy on cold nights.
This Historic Queen Anne Victorian has original lacework & wraparound porch has 4 footprints dating back to 1839 and has been lovingly and tastefully added onto by each of the former residents preserving it's Landmark status. The woodworking is remarkable and the wood is rare and beautiful ~ including clear chestnut, blistered poplar, black walnut, cherry, white oak and heartpine ~ gracing walls, floors, ceilings, 6 fireplaces, stairs & rails. And it's for sale, too! Inquire within.

Guest access

There is a separate entrance for guests. Breakfast items such as oatmeal, breakfast bars, fresh fruit, reverse osmosis water, coffee & tea will be available in the hallway between rooms. There will be a small refrigerator to store a few favorite items you might want to bring from home, plus a microwave, toaster oven & coffee maker. If you want a full cooked breakfast, that can usually be arranged: for an extra $15/person a hearty breakfast made with mostly organic ingredients will be served in your room or in the dining room downstairs. Ample notice (48hrs preferred) must be given for that option.

Interaction with guests

Your schedule will be your own while staying here. We value your privacy and also ours! :) We'll most likely be here to greet you while you check in and show you around. We assume that you'll have your trip planned, but if it's wide open, we'll be happy to give you some suggestions of places to visit and see while your here ~ it all depends on you! Art galleries? Hiking? Driving? Sightseeing? Shopping? Fishing? Art Galleries? White Water Rafting? Lazy River tubing? Ziplining? Nightlife? Entertainment? Good Eateries? Golfing or even Skiing!
Let us know what it is you like to do and we'll do our best to guide you to the right place to find that ~ a concierge of sorts. Check out the ever expanding guidebook I've created for you.

The neighbourhood

This is a sweet mix of mountains, farms, countryside & little townships in our neighborhood. We're located just under a half an hour drive from the progressive city of Asheville, NC. Our location is convenient & well maintained. It may snow, but we've never been snowed in here in the 12+ years here, yet enjoy sweet valley views with scenes of moody weather laying around the mountains and mingling with the cattle & sweet houses around.

It's beautiful here in WNC, no doubt about that ~ There's something about these mountains that nurtures the soul and spurs creativity. We try to never take for granted that we live in nearly the oldest mountains on the planet, a temperate rainforest & some of the most biodiverse regions on the planet are here. The house is conveniently situated in an agricultural neighborhood 33.3 blissful driving minutes from downtown Asheville ~ 45 minutes from Mount Mitchell ~ 20 minutes from Wolf Laurel Ski Resort ~ half an hour from the Appalachian Trail ~ 25 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway... all yielding some of the most beautiful hikes with no shortage of views or waterfalls... Many ways to satisfy your soul ~ If you're a photographer, like me ~ you will feel visually blissed constantly... And ~ on a clear night ~ you'll be able to see the Milky Way.

"I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright." Thoreau.

Getting around

Located off Hwy 19 less than 30 minutes from Asheville in 1 direction & 35 minutes from Mt Mitchell in the other, there are beautiful drives whichever direction you go from here. We are located around 8 miles to Burnsville to the east and 8 miles to Mars Hill to the west... which are where you will find the grocery stores & gas stations live...

Other things to note

These mountains are home to many productive Artists & twice a year, many of them open up their studios to the public ~ Locally, it's the TRAC Studio Tour of which I participate in & join a neighboring studio about 5 minutes from the house. It's always fun visiting the artists private space when their expecting you! Great to see the 'behind the scenes' of many of the pieces you might see in the local galleries. Great people, very good art, in a really beautiful area!

We ask for a minimum 2 night stay on weekends but are flexible during the week.

New Rules! ;~) But seriously folks ~ please abide by the following:

#1 This is a non-smoking household. We understand the desire to puff, but please ~ No smoking inside! We do, however have an ashtray on the covered wraparound porch in front ~ please use it if you do. Thank You!

#2 We have a sweet and spunky long haired Jack Russell named Rascal... He loves to run like the wind, so PLEASE don't let him out :) He has his own yard to run around in that's a lot more safe. Sorry that your dog is not allowed to come & play with him. It might be fine, but we just don't want to chance any accidents, so that's why the 'No Pets' rule here.

#3 Never leave the gas fireplaces or space heaters on when you leave the room or overnight! The gas fireplaces are pretty much for ambience only… They are vented as per code so the heat goes right out the chimney… It might take the chill off the room and look nice but it would be very expensive to run it the whole time you're there. I ask that you please limit your use to a half an hour before you go to sleep and a half an hour when you wake up. Otherwise, it would not only cost more than your stay in energy bills, but be dangerous for everybody in the house. I know the rooms can get a bit chilly at night, but there are plenty of blankets and high grade insulating curtains to minimize the chill. You can feel free to let me know when you're coming home from your day out & I'll be happy to take the chill off the room for you & turn on the porch lights! The space heaters have a thermostat setting which is okay to turn down ~ maximum setting overnight should be no higher than medium. Best to cuddle up & let your body heat do the job :)

#4 Enjoy Your Stay!!!

#5 I know you want us to remember you, but I promise you, we will! You don't have to leave a piece of yourself behind. I'd say around 80% of guests leave *something* behind in the room. Take a second and even a third look around before you leave.

Happy trails to you!!! I hope we meet again ~~~

Love Always, Judy

Our stay at Judy's home was wonderful! We were making a trip to Asheville for our anniversay and decided to stay outside the city. This location was just about a half hour from the city and easy to get to and from. Judy has excellent recommendations for places to eat in the immediate area, as we got in a bit late our 1st night and decided to not venture into Asheville. Another wonderful thing about the accommodations is that Judy has a small fridge, toaster oven, coffee maker (with a selection of coffees) for guest use right outside the room. She also offers a home cooked breakfast which we chose to enjoy....and boy did we! It was delicious! As for the is a piece of history and Judy shared the history with us, xxwhich was very interesting and made our stay even more special! Judy is a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed. She even made sure the lights were on and our room was a comfortable temperature when we returned each night. We definitely recommend Judy's to anyone looking for a home away from home!

Judy is a gracious most helpful host and her place is a charming delightful old Victorian with beautiful woodwork, a very comfortable bed, and a cute well behaved Jack Russell Terrier. Coffee, cereal and tasty cookies were also provided. A most elegant stay.

The Purple Orchid was a spectacular home in which to stay! It is a beautiful home built by Biltmore craftsmen with exotic woodwork throughout. Judy prepared sumptuous breakfasts for me each morning that were all organic...and delicious! She attends to even the smallest detail...a superb hostess!! If possible, I would stay there again and again! Outstanding!

Judy is a very kind and gracious host. Her home is a gorgeous travel through time. She is very knowledgeable about the history of the home and area. Our room was cozy and had very nice linens. Everything was very clean and well cared for.

Judy's house was as described and Judy was just as nice. The house has a nice antique style to it, victorian (I think) and we enjoyed the energy very much. Judy provided all the things we needed and could ask for at a continental breakfast hotel (Water, Tea, Coffee, and delicious snacks/fruits for breakfast etc). Judy was sweet, an artist and a bit like a mother who wanted to make sure you were well taken care of. Some people may not like that kind of care and attention, but I found it to be warm.

Originally from Bucks County PA, I've lived in WNC since 2002 and a few other beautiful parts of the country before that; the mountains of Colorado, southern NJ near Cape May. I really enjoy B&B guests ~ certainly the most interesting and appreciative folks… so many great stories ~ I have old handmade paper journals filled with smile making memories, and now sweet reviews are filling up the pages of this virtual journal at Airbnb. :)

I'll be happy to help you with your plans while you're here. If you want, I'll share maps of the area & highlight things you might like ~ good hikes, vistas & waterfalls, drives, eateries, entertainment, art galleries/studios, etc.
