Situated to the north of odiyam beach , perched on the edge of a cliff, in a plantation of banana and coconuts trees, with views of the sea sits Royal Luxury Cottage. There are two other holiday properties here, both owned by Jasar, one currently under construction and the other finished. They are quite close together, as seems to be the style offered by most small resorts along the cliff. Jasar's place is a walkable distance to North Cliff (about a 45 -60 minute, slow walk in the heat) to the centre of the cliff where you will find plenty of great places to eat and while away the hours people watching and gazing into the Arabian Sea. There is an option to order food to be delivered to the cottage, but apart from a tea shop nearby, nothing on the site to pop to for a drink or to eat. There is a fridge in the room and a small sink and basic cutlery. The cottage is furnished in a simple style, with a beautiful big antique bed and a very comfortable mattress (a mosquito net would have been wonderful, but Jasar did provide a plug in, on request). Sharaq is on hand 24/7 and it is he who cleans the rooms every day, provides fresh towels and sheets etc. He will also order taxi and tuk tuk for those longer journeys, if necessary. Jasar comes every morning, in his car, with a small simple breakfast (we have egg curry every morning, for the three days we were there, followed by a very small fruit plate) which is served on the veranda of the cottage (a great place to sit at anytime of the day with welcome shade). The cottage has good wifi, air conditioning, a hot shower and a good loo. There are a multitude of accommodation options along the cliff, varying in price and quality....if you want somewhere simple, away from the crowds, in an area where there aren't too many other people (the odd bike, walker, tuktuk passing on the cliff path 60m away), where you can hear the early morning sounds (starts at 5am and goes on for hours) of the small temple nearby, plenty of bird life and a few local houses in the lane running behind, then it's a good spot. Jasar is keen to share information about the area and was very welcoming. We have travelled around India a couple of times and accommodation varies enormously in quality and price. Definitions of luxury vary according to where you go and don't always reflect what we might consider luxury in the West. The location is what makes this place, that is, if you enjoy being away from the crowds.

Jasar was a lovely host checking on us every morning to make sure we were happy with our stay and brought good Keralan food :) The cottage was incredible - comfortable, equipped with all the amenities you'll need on a holiday, and located in a lovely setting right next to the beach with hammocks and swings. It is right next to a path that will take you up to Varkala beach in about 30 mins walk. The accommodation is a short walk from restaurants and hotels (mostly westernised stuff as you get closer to Varkala beach) but quite far from anything else. We quite liked the isolation but when we wanted to go for a wander it was as easy as getting a rickshaw. There's a little tea stall and a shop at the entrance to the temple (2 min walk) where you can buy snacks and drinks and stuff. Would definitely stay here again.

What can I say, the trip was excellent and dealing with Jasar was a pleasure from start to finish. He is a lovely, gentle and very sociable young man who has the time to spend with people if they are so inclined. We had some fabulous conversations and it is very apparent that he is a keen and committed ecoconservationist and is trying to incorporate this in his vision for the area. The cottage is lovely with everything that you could need for a stay to be restful and peaceful. We had four days here after a hectic trip around India and it was perfect. The place is set in a private coconut plantation next to the sea and I enjoyed my coffee in the morning and drink in the evening sitting on the cliff watching the Dolphins in the surf. Sharif is the caretaker and he really does take care of you without being intrusive. He sets the table in the morning for breakfast on the terrace in front of the cottage ready for your awakening. Nothing was too much trouble as he will help in every situation so thank you very much Sharif. I was there in off season doing very little so did not venture too far except for walks along the cliff. There were some places in Verkala cliff that were closed or being renovated but plenty of cafes and restaurant options although I did not go in the evening. Heading right up the beach there is another restaurant that is within walking distance but take a torch if you intend to come back in the dark. There is a supermarket at Odayama, I think it is called Kollam Store which is the nearest you will get to a western store and where you will get provisions for your stay. Jasar does have a separate annexe with Kitchen although I did not see or use but there is a fridge, kettle, work surface in the cottage for making snacks or sandwiches if you wished. We ate food that was delivered every night because we were being lazy and because it was good and an easy option. The masala fish and seafood concerto particularly nice. Overall, a superb place, lovely host and on call help set in a lovely, lovely backdrop. I can thoroughly recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere a little classier, away from the madding crowd and you just want to do very little. As a side note, there was no beach as it was monsoon but this was not an issue for me. There were some fantastic waves and atmospheric sunsets and suns rises though. Thanks for your hospitality Jasar, it was wonderful.

It's easy to see why Jasar is a superhost. His easy, friendly manner immediately puts you at ease and makes you feel you are going to have a great time. The accommodation was excellent and the daily breakfast absolutely delicious. I believe one of the curries I had for breakfast was the best I've ever had. Jasar's place is better than many other places because he has land surrounding his cottages. It makes you feel you are on a secluded tropical island, with the sea crashing in the distance. I do hope that he has no plans to build more cottages there, as the lack of others there is what makes the place feel truly special. The only negative experiences (No Internet for three days, patchy on others and no sign of the mentioned private beach) was to do with things outside Jasar's control and, even then, he did his best to help out. Clearly, the beach appears and disappears according to the seasons/tides, as does the Internet! Sharaf, the on-site caretaker, is also wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble for him, either. Although he is nearly always there, you never feel he is prying or getting in the way. Thank you Sharaf! All in all, my stay was fantastic. India is a beautiful place and it is well worth staying at Jasar's place if you get the chance.

Thank you Jez for staying in my cottage & writing such a nice review. I am glad to know that you liked the breakfast so much so that you thought it was one of the best. Along the south-west coast of India, the beach is of course seasonal depending up on the tides. Though it took us sometime to figure what was wrong with the internet we have it already fixed. It was nice meeting & hosting you. You are always welcome back. Best wishes...Jasar

From the moment we booked Jasar’s cottage, one day before our arrival, he could not have been more helpful. He advised us to save a fortune by taking the train rather than a taxi and met us from the station. His place was exactly as described in a beautiful location and we can only agree with the points made in all the other 5-star reviews. As well as walking south along the cliff- top path into Varkala with its many shops, restaurants and beaches we went north through more deserted country to surfers’ beach. At the end of our 2 day stay Jasar took us to the station but on the way he gave us lunch including coconuts and jack fruits at his house. Jasar is a generous and attentive host. We would unreservedly recommend this airbnb and hope to return some time in the future.

Being bored by the routine technical work I thought differently. Because I am so passionate about Tourism and my grandparents passed away leaving behind the legacy, a beautiful 5 acres coconut farm land located on a beautiful cliff overlooking the Arabian sea, 2 luxury cottages were built. I am interested in meeting different people and sharing culture, food and knowledge. I treat my guests with the passion and provide them great quality services and delicious local food from my grandmother' kitchen. I would do the best to make my guests satisfied during their stay with us.
