Gaer Cottage is one of two cottages converted from a stone barn built in the 18th century. This peaceful retreat is set in 45 acres of ancient meadow and woodland in the foothills of the Black Mountains within the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The space
Gaer cottage is surrounded by woodland and nature. It is lovely to be able to walk out of your front door on to private peaceful paths and to explore the countryside. Enjoy birdsong during the day and starry skies at night.
Guest access
Gaer cottage has its own outside space with garden furniture. There is plenty of accessible parking and you are free to wander all over the 45 acres of private meadows and woodland belonging to Cwm Coed-y-Cerrig farm.
Other things to note
You will find a welcome cake and our own free range eggs on arrival. We also provide all bed linen, towels and tea towels, plus basic kitchen and household items. Gaer has wi-fi but does not have mobile phone reception. Gaer is served by water from our own spring.
Please note that although the sitting room is spacious, the kitchen is a bit of a squeeze for four people to sit around the table. We've done it and had lots of pleasant evenings and meals sitting around Gaer's kitchen table but it is only fair to point this out - please look at the photographs if you are concerned about this - thank you.

Neighbourhood highlights
Gaer cottage is in a secluded valley in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is on National Cycle Route 42 and close to the Cwm Coed-y-Cerrig Nature Reserve. Good local pubs include the Crown at Pantygelli and excellent restaurants can be found in Abergavenny - which also hosts an annual food festival.

Lives in Abergavenny, United Kingdom
Roy and I moved to Wales in 2015 and love it here. We work hard to look after our land so we do our best for the wildlife that lives here - we currently have plenty of wild birds, wildflowers and quite a few secretive dormice.
We have a few chickens who do their best to provide us with eggs - and we also have a gaggle of geese who keep us amused with their antics. When they are laying you are very welcome to try a goose egg for breakfast for a change.
Our woods are classified as ancient woodland as our hazel trees have been coppiced for centuries for charcoal, hazel sticks and firewood. The dormice live on the hazel nuts and we have a lovely variety of wild flowers in the spring and summer - lots of wild daffodils and bluebells and also orchids, cuckoo flowers, vetch, wood sorrell, wood anenome - the list goes on! We're no experts but we'd be pleased to accompany you on the paths through the woodland. Gwent Wildlife Trust occasionally organise walks on our private woodland paths.
We have been making hay since 2018 to encourage the wild flowers in the meadows and we are starting to see some wonderful results - if you like spotting wild flowers, plan your stay for June or the first couple of weeks in July and you won't be disappointed.
Likewise if you are a bird watcher we are surrounded by bird song in the spring and early summer.
We get a lot of pleasure from sharing our land and cottages with other people and do our best to ensure that our guests enjoy their holiday.
