Description

The Tumbleweed Tiny House is located at the Solar Living Center (SLC) in Hopland, California. The Tiny House is a compact 89 square-foot, self-contained building on wheels. All proceeds benefit the Solar Living Institute, a nonprofit organization.

The Tumbleweed Tiny House is located at the Solar Living Center (SLC) in Hopland, California. The SLC is the home of the Solar Living Institute (an environmental education non-profit organization), and the Real Goods Solar retail store. The site of the Tiny House (the SLC) is a 12-acre renewable energy and sustainable living demonstration. The property features various photovoltaic solar arrays, permaculture gardens, and an integrated, aerating water system that mimics natural streambeds, and includes an oasis that is positioned in accordance with the four directions. There are many interesting and educational attractions at the SLC and we encourage guests to fully explore the property.

The Tiny House is a compact 89 square-foot, self-contained building on wheels. It was completed in 2013 by a group of Solar Living Institute (SLI) interns. It is now managed by SLI staff and current interns. Downstairs there is a compact kitchen, including a sink, mini-fridge, and stove-top. There is also a small shower downstairs. Upstairs there is a cozy, full-sized bed. The bed loft is accessed via a wooden ladder and is not handicap accessible. Wireless internet is available on the site under the domain name Real Goods.

NOTE: The toilet for guest use is outside of the house and is the public restroom for the SLC. Please do not use the toilet inside the house as it is not set-up.

Towels and bedding are made from organic materials. There is heat and AC available in the Tiny House. Due to the area, ants are common on the 12-acre grounds. We have noticed them in the house and are dealing with the issue (during the summer months). We ask guests to not leave food on the counters.

Minimal interaction required with guests. Staff, interns, and visitors to the Solar Living Center will be on site during normal business hours.

We are located off the 101, so it is inevitable that guests will hear some traffic noise at night. You can find more information about the general layout of the location by visiting and selecting the tab for Solar Living Center. The map of the site is found under accommodations and is also sent via email to confirmed guests. Tour maps for site visitors can be found various places throughout the SLC as well as inside the Tiny House.

A car is recommended.

We provide coffee, tea, sugar, honey, granola bars, and a few bulk food items. The kitchen has cups, plates, utensils, a french press, and other essentials. The Real Goods store has a selection of snacks and drinks for sale.

Bathroom: There is a shower in the Tiny House. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided or can be purchased in the Real Goods store. Please refrain from using toiletries that are non-biodegradable. The toilet does not function. Guests are to use the public restrooms (women and men separate). The restrooms have individual stalls and sinks. Guests can also use the outdoor kitchen and shower area in our volunteer-camper area. The shower area has an indoor and outdoor shower. Review the map found on our website for complete details.

Our guests have full access to the site when it is closed. SLI interns and caretakers live on the site.

Wonderful little tiny home located right near the SLC. A base to explore Hopland. Make sure to explore the Piazza de Campovida as well as the Campovida winery (amazing gardens!).

If you ever wanted to test out the tiny house idea before getting one, now's your chance! Spoiler alert: This place is great, you can do it! Spend a cool spring night in the glamp tent first to really appreciate just how functionally house-like the tiny house really is.
