Situated in the picturesque village of Villebois-Lavalette in SW France, Maison du Couvent is an up-market, full-service chambres d'hôtes/B&B, offering beds, breakfast, lunches and 3-course regional dinners served with local wines.

The space

In 2012/13 we completely renovated the old barn in the grounds of Maison du Couvent into a modern chambres d'hôtes/B&B, at the same time retaining all the authentic traditional architectural features. With a large terrace, lush floral garden and 11m x 5m swimming pool, we opened in June 2013 and have been busy ever since.

Each of the three en-suite bedrooms have been stylishly restored and have views down the garden, over the swimming pool or the valleys beyond.

Whether you stay in our chambres d'hôtes/B&B for one night, or for one week, you'll always get a warm welcome, up-market accommodation and fabulous food - mais oui, se détendre et se restaurer...relax and restore!

Guest access

Guests will have access to all the facilities of the property, including the swimming pool.

Interaction with guests

Dining has traditionally been a way of socialising in France and we enjoy facilitating that tradition. So come and sit at our table, where some wonderful French dishes await your pleasure - how about:
creamy asparagus tarts, with salade girolles; then,
magret du canard au sauce bigarde, with dauphinoise potatoes; or
salmon en pipolotte, with moon blush tomatoes; and for dessert, we might have a
traditional poire amande and cream; or a
delicious strawberry meringue roulade.

It will be our pleasure to look after you in this magical retreat in France.

Other things to note

Nearly every village in the area offers a range of sporting or cultural activities from para-gliding to pétanque. There are numerous fetes and festivals with attractions like medieval music; dancing; hot air ballooning; giant puppetry; art exhibitions; and of course fabulous markets, which sell speciality wines, food, clothing and are particularly magical when experienced at night.

There are also stunning baroque concerts in the surrounding old Romanesque churches. The acoustics are fantastic and quality of performers outstanding: people travel from all over Europe just to come to these concerts.

If however if you fancy getting that hole-in-one, there is a 9-hole golf course at Pillac and an 18-hole course at Angoulême just waiting for you! The spectacular views from the Angoulême course aren’t to be missed.

It felt like visiting old friends....this, our second stay at Maison du Couvent. We like it here. We like Don and Trish. There were wonderful meals and conversation, and fascinating trips, such as to the replica of LaFayettes ship, in Rochefort. We revisited the chocolatiers of beautiful Angolème and took countless photos of the Tuscan-like countryside. We highly recommend Maison du Couvent.

We arrived here much later than planned because we got lost. It's quite difficult to find and your sat nav WILL lead you astray. The easiest thing to do would be to type in the village name and then call them when you get there. Save yourself time and stress!! When you arrive you will be received warmly by Trish and Don, she's Irish, he's English. They know the area very very well and will be your enthusiastic tourist guides during your stay. Your room will be clean and comfortable and in a separate building to theirs which is nice. There is a full kitchen but it's not for guest use. Trish prepares breakfast there and meals if you wish to find with them - which I suggest you do at least once as they're good company, and she cooks duck well... Mmm.. Breakfast is simple and nice and do remember that's it's a separate charge for same. It will be your job to keep your room clean etc and make your beds. Your linen will be changed if you stay for a week as we did. There is a 10 m spotless pool with shower and very small garden for you to relax in. The area is quiet and peaceful. There are really nice places to visit all within an hour, even cognac is an hour or so away. Bordeaux just about two hours. Trish will happily tell you all the places anyway, so don't worry. The village had one good restaurant , we paid €60 for 3 courses and wine. The tourist office there is very helpful but do nite that there local places to see have strange opening hours and days so plan well! We have no trouble recommending this place to seekers of prettiness, rest and peace and quiet.

A pleasant and peaceful spot from which to base your travels. The hosts are personable and have excellent recommendations about the area. The meals are tasty, tastefully presented, and very good values. The conversation is engaging and overall I'd love, love, love, to come back one day. The area offers something for almost everyone, from castles (complete with moats) to a huge area of wine and cognac production, and seemingly endless beautiful hills and valleys and their tiny and picturesque villages. The photos and representations are exact and I think 99.9999 percent of the guests at this B and B will be happy to have been the guests of Don and Trish. A tomber! Le village et son chateau est egalement tres beau, les balades et le marche du samedi sont pittoresques et sympa. Nous esperons y retourner!
