The neighbourhood

There is a lot to see and do: Art galleries, exhibitions, dances, the city market, great restaurants, architectural wonders, several theaters, the easily accessible Progreso beach, haciendas, cenotes, Mayan temples, nature parks, and much much more.

Getting around

La Pantera Negra is located south of the Zocalo in the San Juan neibourhood where most of the bus stations are settled; San Juan is very pleasant and more typical including the Santa Isabel ermit chapel. The size and the configuration of this colonial house help us to offer you personalized services in the Centro Historico environment near all the public services.

Other things to note

What is an Eco-Chic hotel in Merida, Yucatan?
First of all, our name, the black panther (pantera negra) is a rare species of the jaguar (a wild animal protected by law) that is native to the Yucatan. Because Jean-Pierre and Isabelle care about the environment, there are special things they do to protect it. For instance, there is plenty of sun here all the year around, so they use it to heat the water instead of using a gas heater. As the drinkable water is always sold in plastic bottles, which are not recycled in Yucatan, they supply guests with a reusable bottle of fresh treated water from the cenote before you leave La Pantera Negra to visit Merida and all the sites. Instead of using an air conditioning system they control the temperature naturally with very high ceilings, and by managing the natural air circulation with fans. The thick ancient stone walls and the constant air flow from the ocean keep the interior comfortable.

There are many reasons they decided to re-open La Pantera Negra in Merida: this city, among the oldest in the Americas (founded in 1542) is energetic and exciting and has a high level of culture; it has the advantages of a large modern city and at the same time has preserved the 2nd largest colonial center in the Americas and has the oldest Cathedral of the continent. It is peaceful and very safe. It is easily reachable by air and is located close to many Mayan archeological sites--near Chichen Itza, Uxmal and a number of amazing cenotes. It's just half an hour by bus or car from the Mexican Gulf and the coastal flamingo parks.

La Pantera Negra is located south of the Zocalo (the main city square) in the San Juan neighborhood where most of the bus stations are found. San Juan is a safe, pleasant and typical area that includes the Santa Isabel chapel. The size and the configuration of this colonial house help to offer you personalized services in the fascinating environment of the Centro Historico. By the way, here there are 339 sunny days in every year and an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade.

Renovations on this colonial house were managed responsibly by recycling the stones and gravel from demolished walls in order to mount the garden walls, the swimming pool and the patio. By keeping the plants, the orange, cashew and palm trees and growing new local vegetation, Jean-Pierre and Isabelle are refreshing the place naturally. While creating a roof garden for their vegetables, they also added a relaxing terrace overlooking the pool and tropical garden below. They collect and recycle rain water in an old cistern in order to wash the floors and irrigate the gardens.

In addition to the other things they do to preserve and respect the environment, they buy locally produced fresh food from the large city farmers' market and use the vegetables from their roof garden. Jean-Pierre and Isabelle invite you to participate with them in a new way to live responsibly but comfortably. Join themon a lovely journey in an urban Yucatecan posada while leaving a low carbon footprint on our planet.

First of all we would like to thank Jean-Pierre and Michèle for everything. They are very nice hosts. They provided us with all the information we needed, gave us a lot of information of Merida and Yucatan and helped us whenever we needed help. Also they prepared nice breakfast which was a surprise every morning. Very delicious and interesting since you get a taste of real Yucatan food! The room was just awesome. We liked the hammock very much as well as our own clean bathroom. The whole house is full of art and so pretty decorated, it's just amazing! And if you need to cool down a little bit, you can make use of the beautiful pool in the garden. All in all we felt very welcomed and liked the positive atmosphere in this house. We will come back soon. Merci pour tous Jean et Michèle! Kristina and Marcel

This was one of the nicest Airbnb's I have ever stayed at! We were not actually in the Blue room, but the Green room, which is right next to the main area as you walk in. Jean-Pierre et Isabelle have impeccable taste and it is reflected in everything they do. The furnishings, decorations and art are truly unique and give La Pantera Negra a really lovely vibe. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic on several fronts - the selection (including freshly made juice everyday), the effort to incorporate local vegetables and fruits, the cooking style, and the effort to make some dishes "lighter" to suit the foreigner (myself :). As they have come to the region as foreigners themselves but have spent several years living there, Pierre et Isabelle have an uncommon combination of characteristics: 1) a deep and thorough understanding of the history of the region and what it's like to live there, but also 2) the perspective of a visitor / outsider which allows for a great list of visitor recommendations. All in all, it was a fantastic stay, and highly recommended.

Good morning Elizabeth and Jose, It was a pleasure to receive you at La Pantera Negra B&B and Gallery. We were very happy to meet Elizabeth and Jose. Jose arrived just the last night and we should like to know him better. Anyway, we had time to talk with Elizabeth and she is very active, energic, dynamic and sportive woman. She took a bike tour and because of that we are able to offer this new activity here. This activity really reflect our like style. (without car) We appreciated your company, do not hesitate to come back and to refer to friends. Good luck. Thank you and best wishes!! Isabelle and Jean-Pierre

Pantera Negra is a unique, delightful place to stay -- clearly a labor of love for Jeanne-Pierre and Isabel who moved here from Quebec. Breakfast outdoors is a highlight, but every detail of this B&B has been thoughtfully executed -- from furnishings to artwork to the garden hammock. Merida enthusiasts, Jeanne-Pierre and Isabel are eager to suggest restaurants and outings, both in town and on longer daytrips. Their location is a short walk from Merida's Main Plaza, so safe we ended up leaving our car out on the street. Due to a large group booking the week were there, we ended up in the Green Room, which was fine, but much darker than the other suites. Anyone who understands B& Bs and Airbnb's in particular will find this a great place to stay -- not a boutique hotel or a Yucatan resort but a relaxing, comfortable, friendly place to stay and a great way to explore Merida.

We really enjoyed our stay with Jean-Pierre and Isabelle. Their house is fantastic - an old colonial building with incredibly high ceilings, beautifully decorated and covered in art (they also use it as a gallery). We actually stayed in the yellow room, not the blue room, but we were very happy with it. It was comfortable and attractively decorated, with an ensuite bathroom and access to the garden. We spent quite a lot of time in the garden and on the roof terrace, taking occasional dips in the pool to cool off. Jean-Pierre and Isabelle were lovely hosts. Very friendly and chatty, and provided helpful information about the city. Their house is close to the central square - less than 10 minutes walk - and in a lively and interesting area of town. The main city market is about 5 minutes' walk along calle 67 and definitely worth going to see. Each day of our stay we had a different breakfast, ranging from crepes and waffles to fritata, always served with fruit, juice, great coffee and homemade marmalades. La Pantera Negra was one of our best AirBnB stays - thanks very much!

Isabelle and Jean-Pierre were super quick to respond initially. Their home is gorgeous and just a short walk from the Zocalo. They were a wealth of information and helped us plan our short stay in Merida. We wish we could have stayed longer and plan to return soon! Breakfast was also a real treat up on the terrace.
