The Prospector's Cottage is a simple century home 1/2 way bet. Halifax & Cape Breton Island. One of our guests called it "apartment therapy", surrounded by nature, wildlife, peace and quiet. A retreat but not remote! Come write your novel, paint, breathe...

The space

The Prospector's Cottage is at Necum Teuch Harbour on the river estuary beside a scenic and pastoral coastal highway to Cape Breton. We are about 1/2 way between Halifax and Cape Breton Island. The property is secluded and private - a 4 bedroom, two bath century cottage that we have been renovating bit by bit. So far, there are two double bedrooms available, one downstairs with a full bath and one upstairs with a 1.5 bath. One single room upstairs could be readied if needed (children, etc.) The other large bedroom upstairs is not quite ready - still being painted, etc. but we do have other accommodation close by if needed. Loads of wild camping space too! Well, not too wild I hope ;-)

Please note that the Prospector's is a housekeeping cottage - all the basics are there, including coffee, tea and fresh fruit but you need to bring the rest if you plan to cook. Be sure to make a stop in Sherbrooke (heading west) or Sheet Harbour (heading east) and stock up on groceries. There is a convenience store within walking distance with LCB etc.

We aren't always here to respond quickly and with no cell service, 24 hrs is just a bit too tight, AirBnB! We'll get back to you as fast as we can.

Guest access

The house is yours! At times, you may be sharing it with other guests unless you've booked the whole house, but this is rare. Includes kitchen, living room, bathroom, den, etc. as in pics. The great outdoors is yours to explore and we can help you find forest trails and ocean vistas that most tourists never see.

Interaction with guests

We'll pop by and see that you're settled in and if there's anything you might need. Do you want to know about the area, best hiking trails, best places to swim, fish, kayak etc. just ask! Otherwise, we leave you to your own resources and respect that you need some down time 'away from the madding crowd'. The Prospector's is ideal for that! Fresh fruit bowl, etc on arrival. We're not far away but usually busy with our tree seedling business at (URL HIDDEN)

Other things to note

The Prospectors is a heritage home and still being worked on (painting, etc) but not when we have guests. Old restored home/cottage. Please just feel comfortable and make yourselves at home. If you're camping winter or early spring, we're happy to let you 'wild camp' if you help with a bit of brush whacking and clean up. Please leave the place better than you found it! :-)

Gail's house (this is a full house or just a room!) very much felt like going to visit your grand-mother house: definitely not award wining in terms of decoration but with everything you might need for a few nights' stay. We definitely enjoyed our breakfast outside and the fact that Gail had prepared coffee and left fruits in the kitchen was very thoughtful. The area is stunning, well worth a visit!

This is such a wonderful and relaxing place to stay. We were touring Nova Scotia and after a long trip from Cape Breton Island- along some dodgy roads found this to be a gem of a find. Not a cottage more a mansion with all the advantages of a home with plenty of ouside space to use. For what we needed this was perfect and it was nice to meet Gail who offered plenty of information and tips. Had the most amazing sunset while sitting on the front steps and sipping a beer.

A wonderfully warm cosy house - we only wish we could have stayed longer. Gail was lovely and made sure we were settled in ok with a pleasant welcome of fresh coffee and milk. We had everything we needed for preparing meals and the bedroom and sitting room were very comfortable. Would highly recommend!

I noticed your thoughtful 'tidying' up touches only after I wrote your review. Thank you so much! I do hope your first trip to Canada will open doors to many more. Safe home :-)

Gail and Jurgen's place is excellent value for money and has everything you need. The Garden/land is stunning and Gail has done a good job in keeping everything natural so you can see lots of wildlife. We got very wet on a walk but the log fire was great to warm us back up very homely! Thank you for letting us stay.

Response from Gail & Jurgen:
I loved your comment, Kate. Thank you. It's always a balancing act to just 'prune' Nature a bit to allow passage for we humans so we hardly notice I've been through. I do plant garden flowers, but it's so much more rewarding to the soul to watch the huge wild flower show and the bees/butterflies enjoying it. That beauty can't be duplicated in a garden! We hope you'll come back and visit again one day! Autumn is amazing!

Having spent the day picking our way along the coast from lunenberg, admiring the beautiful nova scotian houses, we were very happy to find ourselves staying in one! The cottage is nestled in the woods with a beautiful view down to the river; lots of outdoor space and a lovely place to while away the evening - just don't forget your mossie spray (or buy some at the friendly local shop). The cottage is clean, well equipped, and instantly felt like home. There were only net curtains in the windows which wasn't a problem for us as the cottage isn't overlooked. But if you don't like to be woken up by the morning sun, consider bringing a sleep mask. Though we only met Gail briefly, she seemed very down to earth and a lot of fun. Thanks for the delicious melon and other bits! We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend it.

Response from Gail & Jurgen:
Thank you for the heads up on the morning sun, Anna! Since we have never slept in that room, I had no idea! I'll have a look see for some blinds! We don't see many 'mossies' but the blackflies can be ferocious in the spring (they're the little quiet, sneaky ones). Thankfully, they're not around the whole summer. Enjoyed meeting you. Next time, I'll join you for that glass on the front porch!

This house is a wonderful old two story, (ca, 1880's), in a beautiful location. Gail made sure to contact us when we had arrived and made us feel totally at home. Down side? This was the only place during our month long tour of Nova Scotia where we only stayed one night. Poor planning on my part - the house and the area deserve more time.

A semi-retired English teacher and ex-nerd are busier than ever with a wide range of interests from wild foraging and hiking to painting, photography and writing - and of course, our growing tree seedling business at Being immersed in natural surroundings is one of the very best things about living on the East Coast of Nova Scotia. What would you like to see? Where would you like to go? What would you like to talk about? We're university educated and always ready to have a gab about .. well, anything and everything. We love meeting people.
