The fenced backyard is a combination of 1-1.2 metre and 1.8 metre fences, with a small gap under the driveway gate. Dogs that are escape artists (either good jumpers or very small and good at sneaking through gaps) may need to be tied up on the back porch if they are to be left alone in the yard.

Guest access

Guests will have access to the entire house and garden. The garage in the far corner of the backyard is locked and only for use by the owners. Usually we don't need to access it while we have guests staying, but on very rare occasions we might need to - in which case we will liaise with guests to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Interaction with guests

We may call in at some stage during your stay to say hello and introduce ourselves if only very briefly. Guests can access the house through a secure PIN code, so you can get into the house immediately on arrival - or we're very happy to greet you if you prefer. We live nearby and are happy to provide help as needed, including advice on Canberra and its surrounds. Recommendations for good coffee, chai and food are included in the welcome pack.

Children are welcome though there are hazards that may not meet child-safe standards. While the house is reasonably child and infant friendly, it isn't a child/infant/fool proof environment, for example regular power points exist (house has safety switches), crockery is accessible on a low shelf, bathroom cabinet has some cleaning products. In the garden heavy metal sculptures should not be climbed on or moved for safety reasons. Parents will need to be vigilant and responsible for their children's safety.
Well-behaved pets are welcome in the yard and the back laundry and kitchen area, but not in the rest of the house please. No smoking inside the house and no parties or functions or large groups in the house please.
If guests generate excessive garbage they must take it away with them.
The house is not for commercial use and any variation to this use must be disclosed and details discussed prior to approval.

Beautiful house and very homely in a nice quiet suburb. Highly recommend walking up to Edgar's Inn for breakfast.

We used this home as a base for exploring Canberra and had a comfortable and cosy stay. The home was exactly as described and Malcolm & Julia are very responsive hosts. Bathroom was clean and modern. Canberra gets quite cold so it was great to have good heating and cosy doonas. Plentiful books and games in the house to keep entertained. Good location being in a quiet residential area but still close to shops and the centre (everything seemed no more than 15mins drive away). We did not cook during our stay but the kitchen appeared well equipped.

We had a great time at Julia and Malcom's place. The house is in a very quiet area, with a park across the road. While we stayed for a work function, the house would be well suited to families looking to stay in Canberra. Ainslie is extremely close to the city center via a short drive or walk. Malcom was very communicative and everything went smoothly for us.

Totally charming house with period details, well maintained, and renovated in the right places to be comfortable. Quiet neighbourhood that's walking distance to amenities.

We spent 4 nights at the Ainslie Art House in June. Canberra delivered very cold nights (-4 degrees) but the cozy doonas and the awesome central heating ensured we were very comfortable. The house is as per photos - an old house, well furnished (especially the kitchen which had lots of pots, utensils, etc and essentials in the pantry), a new bathroom but otherwise homely and welcoming. You can walk to the War Memorial or the Braddon/Lonsdale St shopping/eating area. The house is close to the Ainslie IGA which is well known in Canberra for its great deli / selection of cheeses, salad bar and hot food section. There is easy parking at the house and the district is very quiet. Most enjoyable and the hosts were very responsive. A great stay.

The place was clean cosy and a lovely lace to stay with a big yard for the dogs. Close to the mountain and bike and running tracks. Great stay

We are friendly hosts but we respect your privacy. We can suggest cafes, events, walks and the attractions of Canberra - and we live in a nearby suburb so can help as needed.
