A half kilometre driveway takes you past creeks and trees to our secluded off-grid mudbrick cottage.

Light the stove and before long you'll have hot water, coffee and heat.

Turn on the water for generator power for LED lights and phone recharging.

Pop your food and drink in the stream because that's the refrigerator.

Walk through our 65 acres and on into the adjoining World Heritage Wilderness area of Quamby Bluff.

After dark gaze at the stars like you've never seen them in the city.

The space
Whisky Creek Cottage was hand- built 50 years ago with a bathroom added 20 years later. It's a beautiful, tumbledown piece of art but it's not to everyone's taste. Everything is either reclaimed or made. The bath and basin are from the 1930s. You have to light the stove for coffee and wait for the water to heat for a bath. But you'll enjoy your bath and coffee all the more because you've earned them!

At night pademelons (small wallabies) scamper all over the block so drive slowly to avoid them.

We'll give you instructions on lighting the range but you will need to collect wood from the shed to feed it.

Our cottage is off-grid but it gets a good mobile reception outside although it's weak inside the cottage. We don't have Wi-Fi. We do have 12V power for LED lighting and recharging your phones.

It's best to arrive during daylight hours to familiarize yourself with the setup or bring a very good torch!

Our 65 acre block is a combination of 100 year old trees and some really old growth trees towering over the rest of it. Man ferns line the streams and there are old oxen paths you can follow up Quamby Bluff. Most of the block is still wooded but there is a clearing so you can see the stars at night. There's also a fire pit and outside counter for cooking outdoors.

Where you’ll be

Golden Valley, Tasmania, Australia

At Golden Valley you are 15 minutes from the beautiful artistic hub of Deloraine.

Golden Valley is also close to Mole Creek Caves and Liffey Falls.

The beautiful Projection Bluff trail is ten minutes from the house and the official Quamby Bluff trail is only five minutes away.

You can journey on up to the Great Lake for fishing (45 minutes), Pine Lake for a boardwalk (30 minutes) or take the back roads to Hobart (2.5 hours).

Woolmers Estate, an old original settlers' house, is one hour away.

Pearn's Steam World is twenty minutes away.

Ashgrove Cheese is about ten minutes the other side of Deloraine.

41 Degrees South salmon farm is 10 minutes out of Deloraine too.

Great Lakes Hotel: About a half hour drive up the hill the Great Lakes Hotel is the pub for the trout fishing huts on the Great Lake. It’s a fun outing on a wet day and if it’s cold enough they have a lovely fire.

Liffey Falls: Gorgeous waterfall half an hour away. Take the dirt road, after going downhill from the cottage and turning right then right. The road that turns left from up the hill is terrifying even in a four wheel drive.

There are also a few short informal walks you can take straight from the cottage.
