After 4 months travelling in South America. Marjon's 'Top of the World ' is the best place we have stayed so far. Marjon is a great character, a wealth of knowledge about Rio and its history. We have spent many an hour chatting over a cold beer and a bite to eat. Marjon has shown us a side of Rio that few people ever experience. The apartment is amazing. Comfortable and homely. It's high up above the city surrounded by jungle. We see monkeys, toucans and lots of birds every day. Christ the Redeemer looks over us for above. Marjon's dogs are lovely. There are great walks nearby and the dogs will love to go with you if you want company. The CITY is close at hand. The buses number 006 and 007 plus others stop outside our door every few minutes. The journey to central Santa Teresa and on into town is awesome. The views!! Santa Teresa is very cool. It is safe and the people are friendly. The entire city is amazing. If you are looking for just a couple of days by Rio's beaches then this may not be the place for you but there is much more to Rio than beaches. We have loved this city and staying on 'top of the world ' and will definitely be back.

Staggering views, really enjoyed our stay. Comforable apartment and Marjon was a marvellous host. Not really set up for more than two people but a marvellous space, in a delightful peaceful setting.

We had a great stay at Marjon's! If you are looking to just hit the beaches this might not be the place for you as it requires some travel to the south side. You get a lot in return however. A spacious apartment with large terrace with a stunning view of Christ the redeemer. It feels like you are in the middle of the jungle, with monkeys dropping by on almost a daily basis. Mirante Dona Marte and Christ the redeemer are fairly close as well as the vibrant Lapa. Also walking down the hill in Santa Teresa there is a lot to see (street art, viewing points). Marjon was a great host that welcomed us with nice cold beers and great stories about the area (those you would expect from someone that worked as a South America correspondent for Dutch national tv and major newspapers). Great spot!

A lovely and welcoming host from the first day. Marjon invited us up to a little gathering of friends and made us feel quite welcome. The location is amazing with incredible views. Santa Teresa is an enchanting neighbourhood. It can be a bit tricky at night coming home late and not all drivers seem to know Santa Teresa well, so ask about before picking your cab home. We tried a few UBERs and they were pretty hopelessly lost in the winding neighbourhood up top.

Response from Marjon:
Some taxi's don't like to up hill. Their pretext is: 'dangerous'. Because that is the only reason they can legally use. Moreover UBER is prohibited in Brazil. But if you use the app. 'EASY TAXI', or '99 taxi' everything goes smothely!!

We had a wonderful stay in this gorgeous hideaway in the jungle! We hardly wanted to leave to explore each day because the home is relaxing, comfortable with the most stunning views. Easy to get a taxi, bus or Uber to restaurants, shopping, bars and touring locations. We loved having our own "Rio pets" with the cats and dogs who came to say hello. Marjon was available anytime we needed and gave great recommendations for places to check out. We will definitely return, bringing friends to rent the other beautiful unit that Marjon has on the same property. Highly recommended!

Passionate journalist since 37 years. Born in Amsterdam, I lived in different parts of the world. Ten years in Italy, Bosnia (yes during the war), and Mexico.
Since 15 years in the bohemian Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Although I travel all over Latin America, this magical place is forever my home.
I just finished building this guest house at the top of my garden. A dream I had for years: to create a tasteful and cosy house, so other people can savour the place I love most in the world.
If you want I can be a source of tips for alternative places to visit and hang out, including favelas. Places I deeply love, and often frequent.
Ah yes: I have two (very sweet) dogs and a bunch of cats. (They don't come in your house. No worry.)
This year I will be at home a lot because of the World Cup, and a book I have to finish writing.
That's me, for now.
