The space

The loft combines modern comfort with turn of the century charm and offers generous space. It is a transformed attic from an old mansion at the Boulevard Artigas, one of the main avenues in Montevideo. My wife and me designed it for us two to stay there, and ended up staying over vacation periods with our three children (five in total) and, ...nobody wanted to leave. Later a young celebrity couple rented it from us while my family and me were living in Brazil and later in Europe. The couple did not want to move out any more, even after they got their first child.
Once you are there, you don't want to leave, this has been confirmed by journalists that published the space in a regional architectural magazine.

Guest access

Other than the comfortably equipped loft with its two balconies, you will have access to a parking space in case you require it for a (rental) car.

Interaction with guests

The loft is usually rented when I am travelling, that is why I have to point to my sister Benita, she is mostly around and in charge. So any question, comment, or help you need, you can contact her.

The neighbourhood

The Loft is the attic of a mansion located at the magnificient Boulevard Artigas. The neighborhood is very diverse, it includes the University of Architecture, embassies, old residences but also apartment buildings and small businesses. In walking distance there are various parks including the Parque Rodo, and not far is also the centric Golf Club and both limit to the River Plate shoring nice beaches along the coast, ideal for walking, biking or jogging. In the close vicinity of the loft you can also find restaurants and pubs and not too far away you have the large shopping center Punta Carretas.

Getting around

The loft is located on and close to various important avenues (Bvar. Artigas, Bvar. España, Avda. Brasil, and Avda. 18 de Julio) that all offer public transportation with bus lines into all the directions of the city. That is the only important means of public transport other than the taxi. Both, taxis as well as buses, are well affordable, but don't any more offer the standards used to in Europe - the times when all taxis in Uruguay used to be Mercedes Benz are long gone. The public transport you have to pay in local currency and you shall be prepared and have sufficient change. Other than that you can contract remise/limo service or rent cars, nevertheless these are usually slightly more expensive than what you might be used in the US or Europe.

Other things to note

Please be aware that Boulevard Artigas is splendid, but can at times be noisy (one of my many guests reminded me recently). I should also mention that you can get with a lift to the second floor, but to get to the third floor where the loft is, you shall take a stair.

This is a really great place, spacious and very light, with two nice terraces and any equipment one may need. Everything is as described, but a light sleeper might prefer the smaller bedroom downstairs which is quieter and has curtains to make it dark, rather than the loft. The street outside is a major road which can be heard quite well in the loft in the early morning. Other than that the noise is not disturbing. In addition, the small bedroom has an airco system which the main room and loft is lacking. This can be useful in a warm period. A second set of keys would be useful to have if more than one guest.

Our stay in Montevideo in Thomas' loft was fantastic. It was very central and well situated within close proximity to restaurants, shops, and the beach. The loft was well cared for and was exactly as advertised and well represented by the photos. Thomas had arranged for us to be met by his sister Benito who was extremely helpful, prompt in responses and made herself very available to us during our stay. Would absolutely recommend this loft! Thanks so much!

As described and more: Fabulous space, bright and roomy, in my favorite Montevideo neighborhood. Noise from the street was minimal as the building is set back from Bulevar Artigas. Thomas and Benita are first rate hosts. It's true, you won't want to leave.

We arrived late at night, but Thomas' sister was available and happy to meet us to hand over the keys. Throughout our stay she was extremely helpful, answering any questions we had, and ensuring that we knew about any quirks with the apartment. The apartment itself is magnificent. Very comfortable with plenty of light and a great kitchen. The interior design work is outstanding. It is in a great location (~2 blocks from Parque Rodo), and with easy access to the Rambla (~10 min walk) and Old Town (~$4 cab ride). In addition, the Pocitos neighborhood has a great vibe and outstanding restaurants within walking distance. All in all, a great experience!
