A spacious cottage perfectly located for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Parks. Step inside and you are stepping into history. You will find snowy-white limewashed walls, exposed floorboards softened with natural jute and wool rugs, original beams and wood panelling, exposed stonework and cushioned window seats and those stone stairs worn through the ages by hundreds of thousands of footsteps!
The space
Brontë School House is a beautiful period holiday cottage simply steeped in history: it was the old Clergy Daughters' School attended by Charlotte and Emily Brontë 1824-25 and was infamously portrayed as 'Lowood' in Jane Eyre! The property has now been sensitively restored preserving the historical character whilst also including modern-day comforts. The property is well equipped with everything you could want for a comfortable stay. Enjoy relaxing by the log-burner in the cosy sitting room or taking a long soak in the big roll-top bath after a day’s hiking before sinking into the crisp white cotton bedlinen.
On sunny days you can take advantage of the garden: dining al fresco under the shade of a tree, relaxing to the sound of the water of Leck Beck ( accessible just the other side of the garden wall ) with a glass of wine whilst enjoying the views across rolling countryside - views which have stayed pretty well the same for centuries!. And if the kids are with you they have the space to run around playing out their own games and adventures.
Brontë School House comfortably sleeps five adults in three bedrooms. On the ground floor is:
- a light and spacious Lounge housing comfy sofas, a wood-burning stove, bookshelves laden with books and magazines, television with digital freeview and DVD player with DVDs; a large bay window provides glorious vistas to the garden and countryside beyond;
- a separate Dining Room, with Georgian cast-iron columns and wooden panelling dating from an eighteenth century extension to the original property, housing a six seater dining table and chairs; a cushioned window-seat below a Victorian sash window provides the perfect spot to sit and read a book;
- a Kitchen with free standing wooden units, ceramic hob/electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and fully equipped with crockery, glassware, cutlery and cooking utensils so that you can do as much or as little cooking as you wish!
- a Bathroom with a wonderful claw foot bath for lazy soaks, a separate freestanding shower, toilet & wash basin.
Original stone stairs lead to the first floor where there are three bedrooms and a separate toilet & wash-basin.
- the Master Bedroom houses a king size brass bed with pocket sprung matress, Victorian cast-iron fireplace and dual window-seats overlooking the garden and open countryside beyond;
- the second Bedroom has twin iron bedsteads with pocket sprung matresses, Victorian cast-iron fireplace and window-seat with views to open countryside; and
- the third Bedroom with its exposed stonework has an edwardian brass bed with pocket sprung matress and window-seat with views to the sheep or cattle grazing in the neighbouring field;
There is off-road private parking for two vehicles.

Brontë School House is located in the village of Cowan Bridge in the Lune Valley and is less than 2 miles from the beautiful, historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale; the cottage is ideally situated for exploring both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
The Lake District probably needs no introduction: it is stunningly beautiful and is now a World Heritage Site; the Lune Valley itself is a timeless landscape of beautiful unspoilt countryside & ancient stone-built villages and the Yorkshire Dales is home to the most fantastic limestone scenery both above & below ground! If you like the outdoors you cannot help but fall in love with this part of the country!
Kirkby Lonsdale is an absolutely delightful historic market town home to numerous enticing cafés, bars, restaurants and small independent shops as well as an excellent supermarket. The view of the River Lune, as painted by Turner and praised by John Ruskin as "one of the loveliest views in England", can be seen from St Mary's churchyard in Kirkby Lonsdale.
Cowan Bridge: is a small village with an excellent general store/newsagents and cafe (Cowan Bridge Stores & Tearooms) and the wonderful fine-dining restaurant Hipping Hall - well worth a splurge! And just a half hours walk down a very quiet country lane is the superb Highwayman bar and restaurant in Burrow.
This whole area is a walkers paradise in all seasons. With walks a-plenty straight from the doorstep and many more only a short drive away - you'll definitely need more than a week to do the area justice!
In addition to walking there are any number of other outdoor pursuits in the area: Potholing/Caving, Climbing/Abseiling, Cycling, Canoeing, Sailing, Golf, Fishing, Horse Riding.

I am passionate about ancient buildings and the need to preserve our heritage. It was during the very hands-on two year renovation of Bronte School House (a grade II listed building) that I became quite obsessed with learning about and utilising the materials that were originally used to build properties of this era and with finding out about the history of the building. The link to the Brontes ignited an interest in their literature and I have spent many hours browsing second-hand bookshops seeking out old hard-back copies of their novels to read. The language they use is just so beautiful, it's a shame that much of their vocabulary has now sadly dropped from common parlance. I guess my other main interest is travelling: to experience different cultures, different ways of living, different outlooks on life, different ways of being. I am fortunate to have found a great travelling companion in my husband Malik. We both have a particular soft spot for India and have spent a great deal of time travelling, primarily by train, throughout that fascinating nation.

During your stay
During the Covid-19 threat period I won't be meeting you at the cottage but will instead leave the keys in the key safe for you. There is a Property Information File in the cottage with details of how everything works and lots of info about the surrounding area. I live only half an hour away in Lancaster and am available at the other end of the phone/Whatsapp/messaging in case of any problems or should you need any information.
