10 Minutes from Darwin International Airport. Elevated home in Malak with a huge balcony overlooking the garden.
Bus service within 1 minute walking can take about 45 minutes to reach the city

The space

** Please note I Amanda do not live here but I do visit sometimes :) **

Darwin local for 25+ years Mara has a wealth of knowledge of the area and a passion for sharing it. The huge balcony is a beautiful spot for relaxing with a glass of wine or beer and talking into the night.

**** Sometimes I may have extra people staying with us. Mostly in the dry season. Please check or notify me if you have an issue with this. The house is still not a party house during this time! ****

There are one snake on the premises! There is a black headed python under the house. You probably won't even see him He is not poisonous!!

Guest access

**** We have two airbnb rooms online. you can book them both if available for a discount (just contact) otherwise there may be other guests staying the same time. If a social home stay is not to your liking I would recommend elsewhere ****

During the week we can't always be there to let you in until after four pm as we are working full time. However we try to be as flexible as possible. Just communicate!

You have full access to the house & kitchen. Wifi access is available to you. There is also a desktop PC you can use for short periods
We are a green house we try to conserve energy as much as possible and recycle recycle recycle!

We just have a few things to know about staying here.
Please note pretty much everything is flexible we just require notice to organise around.

As I work full time we ask that you do not use the
shower between 5:30am & 7am on weekdays. This is flexible, just discuss with us if you will require access during this time and we can coordinate!

You are more than welcome to use the washing machine. Powder needs to go on the left hand side, never stick anything in the middle it clogs the machine. Also when you are finished please switch to off and leave the door open to avoid mould. We prefer to do laundry on the weekend so ask you to use it only on weekdays. Again flexible by request!

Please do not touch the snakes without ourselves around. Snakes are serious escape artists. And one bites very painfully. (this one is
not flexible ;) )

After using the bathroom or toilet we would prefer the toilet seat down (it is a girl’s house after all) and the doors left open. Please don’t close the doors if no one is in there, Dampness can be a big problem in Darwin especially during the high humidity seasons.

After finishing in a room turn off lights and fans.
No point wasting resources!

Please be quiet after 10pm on weeknights.

You have full access to the kitchen we just ask that you clean up after yourself

If you are last out every door must be locked including the gates! Also lock the gates at night

Internet!
Just note I have a 200GB download limit so excessive downloading (movies etc) could cost large amounts of extra money or shape my speeds to dial-up until the month contract ends. But there is allowance for a bit just ask me if you are worried the odd movie here and there won’t break
my limit! Also please keep downloading to after hours. After 10pm or during the day when none of us are home since it clogs the internet, Darwin does not have the best internet solutions.

There is a small plastic bin on the left hand of the sink for all compost waste. Only put organic waste in there that will break down in the garden (no meat or dairy) On the right hand side of the sink area on the ground
is a blue bucket for recyclable goods. Plastic bottles, paper, glass etc. The general waste bin is underneath the main sink. The two large bins downstairs red lid for general waste, yellow lid for recycling

We very much enjoyed our stay at Mara's. We were made to feel very welcome, the room was very cosy and clean, and our hosts went out of their way to make our stay a most pleasant one. The house is in a very nice neighbourhood, in close proximity to a larger supermarket, and an excellent hub for exploring Darwin as well as other nearby destinations (e.g. Kakadu).

The House is very big and the room was very good and clean. Mara welcome us and is very friendly. We did not have the pleasure to meet Amanda unfortunately. The house is very organised for guests and you will find lots of info about the area and things to do. The house has a very big veranda and we were also able to do our washing during the stay.

I wrote in Mara's guestbook 'home away from home'. Lovely stay! Mara has travelled a lot herself and you will get a feel of that in her house, which is great :) I booked very last minute, but Amanda was quick to reply and provided excellent communication and Mara did as well. Would definitely recommend this place. Good value for money, clean, good wifi, Malak night market around the corner, safe parking of your car within the gate, luscious garden + the sound of birds...would stay again!

The home was very cozy with beautiful kitchen and patio. The bedroom was private with a large and comfortable bed. Great fan and air conditioning options. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway then this place is perfect. Mara and her family are very kind and informative. Neat place.

Interaction with guests

I (Amanda) do not live at the residence. I do occasionally stop by but you might not see me. Mara(my mother) will be your host.

She can leave you alone or talk your ear off, it depends on you and what interactions you are comfortable with. During the week we work full time and have many night time commitments. Mara is social and friendly and will happily take you along to our own social events if available. In the dry season we head out to Kakadu & Litchfield most weekends if you are there at the right time we will invite you.
