The Main Guest Room (Comfy Room for 2) of this 1873 Greek Revival home built for Captain David Nelson Hill in 1873 is at the top of the center staircase with easy access to the second floor shared bathroom. It has a king-size bed that may be set up as two twins if needed. Enjoy the use of the well-equipped kitchen and public rooms.

The space

Our home, one of the Stone Sloop Captains' houses built in the mid 1800s, is situated on a lovely 2 acre property at the water's edge and accommodates 8 in 5 rooms on the second floor: Garden View $75-1 twin bed; Walter's Comfy Room for 2 $150-1 King or 2 twin beds and chaise; Captain's Room $125-full bed and love seat; J's Cozy Room/full bed $75 for 1, $100 for 2; & C's Tuck-away Room/twin-$63.

The house is walking distance of the CTC Ferry, Stone Wharf, beach, museum, library, store and restaurants. Our property is smoke free, inside and out, but feel free to bring along your favorite beverage to sip while you sit on the back bank and watch the birds and boats or just relax in the hammock. There are flowers and trees, two cats and a large white poodle to add to your enjoyment.

Guest access

Guests have use of our public rooms and grounds, including the "back bank", which is a great place for sitting and sipping while watching egrets, herons, belted king fishers and the MV Islander's comings and goings. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the kitchen, dining room or backyard, depending on guest preference and weather. Dietary preferences and requirements are taken into consideration when I'm informed in advance.

Guests may use our kitchen, bring food to prepare, order a food delivery from Whole Foods in advance of arrival or make arrangements with me regarding joining our household for lunches and dinners. If you'd like, accomplished professional chefs and gourmet cooks, who make their home on the Island, may be available to cook up a special meal for you. Fresh lobster is available from local lobstermen throughout the year if you'd like a traditional steamed lobster dinner. Breakfast foods and supplies are available, let me know how I can help you manage lunch and dinners.

Groceries can be purchased from Doughty's Island Market, open all year and just a short walk down the South Road, but you'll find frozen meats, not fresh. Doughty's is also a great place to pick up a sandwich, a slice of pizza, a cup of coffee and if you're lucky - Julie's award winning chili in the colder months. It's closed on Wednesdays except during the busy summer season.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. Our formal living room doubles as our media room with a 10' screen and surround sound. There are water color paints and art paper, board games, chess and playing cards, as well as many books for our guests enjoyment.

Guests may use our washer and dryer and laundry supplies following my "tutorial".

Interaction with guests

Our home is spacious and provides opportunity for quiet privacy as well as camaraderie. I follow my guests' lead. I can move about the house quietly, without intruding or comfortably interact with guests. Most guests sit back, relax and make themselves at home. I'm always available to answer questions or tend to concerns.

Other things to note

Chebeague Island is all about community, it is not necessarily a tourist destination. If you're looking for quaint shops and cafes, check out the Old Port in Portland before or after you visit Chebeague. Many artists and craftsmen make their home on Chebeague Island. I will be happy to organize a personal studio tour for you if you are interested in viewing paintings, sculptures, wooden bowls and vases, wooden carvings and signs, hand made toys, original jewelry, hand loomed rugs and towels and more.

Another helpful link is our island's website at www dot (URL HIDDEN) ... it will give you a feel for the community and access to links to island organizations, businesses and events.

What a beautiful island! Mary and her husband were excellent hosts and made us feel like we were visiting family. Their breakfast offerings were above and beyond and the sweet place at the end of the garden to watch the tide and ships was idyllic! The bikes made the entire island easily accessible and it was so fun exploring! Everyone is very friendly from waiving when you pass them in their car to the "honour box" vegetable stand in the middle of the island. Was a great visit and will certainly recommend.

Enjoyed our stay at Mary's place. Great communication and comfortable. Fun to have bikes to tour around the island. Mary shared a lot of interesting history about Chebeague. Walking distance to boat launch and the Inn. Our first time on the Island, I am sure we will return

We loved our peaceful stay on Chebeague with Mary and family and especially appreciated the use of the bikes, the guidance to the island, and the breakfast, coffee, walk out to the cove, and congenial common areas.

I've stayed at Mary's place before--she & her husband John are beyond accommodating and helpful. And their house has everything one would ever need! My fiance and I love Chebeague (we actually got engaged there on our last trip & plan on having our wedding there!). We'll definitely be staying with Mary for years to come.

Extremely warm and welcoming hosts. The house is lovely and you are given a fascinating insite into the family history of the house and island life! The breakfast in the kitchen was carefully and thoroughly thought out and we had the best night's sleep of our whole whirlwind 5 day Maine trip in the divinely comfortable bed. We highly recommend a stay here!

I enjoy sharing time with friends, family and guests. Whether gathered in the kitchen or seated around our dining table, I'm energized by conversations that evolve and find satisfaction in knowing that folks are able to comfortably share ideas and experiences. I'm pretty easy going and welcome help when offered. I'm not easily frazzled by large groups of visitors. I love to laugh and my husband and I have many interests, including travel, visiting museums, viewing architecture, attending theater and cultural events, volunteering with community organizations, walking, biking, sailing and eating tasty food.
