Beautiful sunny apartment in the heart of the 2nd best european resort in Europe. Very well furnished, outstanding view with south exposure, large balcony. Close to ski lifts, shops, restaurants, Palai des Sports...ski down back to the door ...

The space

Our beautiful apartment is located in the Residence “Les Solaires” in the heart of the resort, at the “Eclose”, in the district called “Les Passeaux” where all shops and restaurants are readily available.

L'Alpe d'Huez is a great resort with lots of sports facilities such as tennis, swimming, and in summer archery, rock climbing, mini golf, hiking, via ferrata, an exceptional bike playground, and of course world famous roads for biking and The Tour de France! The lifts operate all along the summer holiday period.

In winter the Eclose/Passeaux sector is served by two chairlifts, and is therefore very easy to get to the slopes, especially the nursery slopes at the bottom of the resort, and you can come back to the residence while skiing.

A public outside lift leads to the foot of the residence and is at the forefront of the valley with breathtaking views, south facing and not overlooked! The southern exposure ensures that there is sun in the apartment from morning to sunset and at night you can watch the twinkling lights in the valley below.

The apartment is very pleasant and has 5 beds consisting of a large sofa bed in the main room with a real mattress and a single bed on the mezzanine followed by the alcove with two bunk beds which is isolated from the rest of the apartment by a door. This layout is ideal for families with young children as it allows for the various bedtimes due to different age groups or those in the group that have skied themselves out during the day! Additionally above the beds are small individual reading lights thus allowing each lamp to turn on or off without disturbing others sleeping in the same area.

The temperature inside the flat is always comfortable thanks to the southern exposure, but also to a discreet heating under the floor, enabling you to walk barefore without freezing, even when heaters are turned off. Everything has been completely renovated and is new throughout the apartment from the mattresses through to the floor and in the kitchen there is all new kitchen utensils too.

The large south facing balcony overlooks the snow/grass allowing those with younger families to watch their children playing outside. For children (and adults), the district of Eclose has a great sledging slope served by a chairlift that continues to run after all the other ski lifts close for the day.
You can store your bikes on the balcony if you bring a cover to shelter the floor. If you are at least two, it is easy to put the bikes directly on the balcony from outside, as the apartment is at ground level and is about as high as a man.
To go skiing, you just need to take the public lift in front of the entrance of the residence, and you are direclty on the snowfront. From there you can ski down the slope to the "telecentre lift", and from there get to the "DMC" one of the main cabin of the Alpe d'Huez. You can also walk 150m to take the chairlift to the Bergers, and from there take the "Marmottes chairlift", which is the second main lift.
To come back from skiing, you can take the chairlift of the Eclose or of Bergers, and once on the Eclose/Passeaux sector, you just ski down under a building until the entrance of the residence on the other side of the road!!!
You can go on foot to the Palais des Sports, and there are a multitude of activities to keep all ages occupied with a Swimming pool, cinema, climbing, squash and mini golf to name just a few of more than 30 available!
The Eclose is also served by a free shuttle bus that has a route all around Alpe d'Huez.
The bus from Grenoble also has a stop at l'Eclose.
If you come by car, it is very easy: follow Viel Alpe, Passeaux at the entrance of the resort, and it is possible to park at the foot of the residence for free.

We were satisfied with the apartment and our stay in Alpe d'Huez, despite a few qualms with the apartment, which we wish we were aware of before booking. Firstly, we couldn't find a lift directly outside the apartment block as stated. Instead, along with other groups we met staying in Les Solaires, we had to walk 10/15 minutes to the closest chair in l'Eclose (this apartment is actually in Les Passeux) which takes you to Les Bergers (from which you have access to the whole resort). Thankfully, you can ski back from the L'Eclose lift to the apartment -with some difficulty in certain (patchy) conditions. On arrival, we were met by the concierge, from Wikizi. Wikizi had a limited number of bedding sets and towels so we were left short and instructed to find our own sheets from the local launderette, despite booking the sheet/towel package well in advance. Furthermore, on leaving, we spent a good few hours cleaning the apartment, leaving it in what we thought to be the same state as we found it. Unfortunately, the Wikizi representative disagreed and our hands were tied, obviously we had no room to negotiate as it was our word against hers. This was a real shame and led to an airbnb 'resolution' (the first I've experienced) and an additional 45 euro cleaning charge. I only include this in the review to warn future users to be extra attentive when cleaning. Furthermore, there is no oven, as stated, rather a small hob and a microwave. Also, there are no plug sockets in the kitchen or near the beds. So when using the toaster/coffee machine, you are forced to get creative with where you make breakfast, be that stood on the dining table chair (using the plug for the TV) or sat in the back bedroom, near the bathroom. In terms of location, there is not much going on in Les Passeux other than a couple of ski shops, a supermarket and one or two restaurants. The area is quiet and evening entertainment tends to take place in the centre of town which is around 15-20 minutes away walking - Alpe d'Huez is a particularly big, sprawling resort . However, this is compensated by the beautiful south-facing view over the valley down towards Huez. Finally, although correctly stated in the apartment description, I wish to reiterate that there is no Wifi in the apartment and the mobile reception is particularly patchy in this part of town. Given my generation Y heritage, Wifi is something you come to expect in holiday apartments and the lack of connectivity was a touch annoying/inconvenient. Other than these qualms, mainly aimed at the concierge company, Wikizi, we were moderately satisfied with our stay. Although we never met, thanks Maude for letting us stay and being punctual in your replies. The apartment is good value for money in an otherwise ridiculously expensive resort.

Cozy flat close to amenities We like the fact that although the flat is small, it was cozy with good facilities. Suitable for families with children. We loved the view over the Huez village below. Very good location - It is situated 5 minutes walking distance to the ski chairlift which took us to Les Bergers skiing area which was great. Also 5 minutes away to the nearest supermarket and 10-15 minutes to the resort centre, including the 2 swimming pools (one indoor, one outdoor). Free parking around the block of flats which is a positive. No wifi which is a negative. No TV channels in English, only French. The concierge service was very helpful and friendly. Overall good skiing accomodation.

The apartment is a bit out of the central town area of Alpe d'Huez (about 15 minutes on foot). The apartment is in an older building and some aspects of the apartment (bathroom) could use some work. The apartment is quite small, so best suited to a small family or very close friends. The only storage (for anything) is under the beds, so make sure your luggage isn't too big or rigid. But, the apartment was cozy and clean, the view was amazing, and check-in/check-out/communication with Wiziki/Maude very easy. I would recommend.

Room with a view! This is just stunning. The appartement is set up for 5 persons, which is ok for a night but do not suggest for a full week. Maude has been an excellent host and ensured that everything was arranged for!
