Queen thermopedic bed, cathedral ceiling, large closets, chest of drawers, desk, separate thermostat, shared bath with shower & tub. The space

A new "green" house rebuilt in 2006--legend has it on the site of Amherst's brothel. The only working girls now are my small flock of hens beside the shed that work for chickenfeed. Across the street is the Newell Court community gardens. An abundance of flowering trees, bushes and plants make an Amherst springtime a delight for the senses. Autumn finds the trees aflame with color.

Guest access

With the exceptions of my bedroom, the other guest room and my loft office, guests are free to make themselves at home inside, on the deck or grounds. The Jungle Grrlz (my chickens) love visitors and will bend your ear dishing more dirt than Delta Sand & Gravel down the road in Sunderland. They love bugs more than the NSA.

Interaction with guests

Depending on your schedule and mine we can have a gab fest or just the bare minimum. I follow the middle path, so I can be still or chatty. I am also a good listener. I am available either in person or by text, email or my cell phone to answer questions or help with directions or suggestions.

Other things to note

Amherst is central to the Five Colleges, Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke (South Hadley), Smith (Northampton) and the University of Massachusetts flagship campus. The "Happy Valley" as it is affectionately known abounds with arts, crafts, culture, education, farming, sports and recreation. So if it is music, theater, apple picking, museums, dinning, shopping or nature the area is the equal of many Northeastern cities but with less traffic and more convenient parking. Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost were poets who made Amherst their home as have many other notables both historic and contemporary. Whether it is enjoying a Shakespeare play at the Renaissance Center, a "contact high" at Gungafest on the Amherst Common or a homemade ice cream at Bart's there's something for everyone and every taste in the Valley.

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 5PM

Enjoy your stay! I am easy-going but there are a few rules you must follow so that I too can enjoy your stay. Shoes off in the house--I have an assortment of slippers. Please, no smoking, no heavy fragrances and be careful with food and drink in the bedroom. When Conrad Hilton was asked what he had learned from his many years in the hotel business, he replied, "The shower curtain goes inside the tub." There are actually two shower curtains, please make sure the inside one goes inside the tub and seals the spray from going out onto the floor. I have had leaks into the bathroom ceiling downstairs and I would like to avoid repeats. It is a quiet neighborhood and so everyone can get a good night's sleep, please keep conversations low and tread lightly after 11 PM. Kitchen, laundry, and dining area are here for your use, but I am fussy about the kitchen: please clean up after yourself don't leave dirty dishes, food scraps or spills. Dishes cleared of food scraps can go in dishwasher. Cutlery, pots and pans get hand washed and put in drying rack. If you scorch, you scour until shiny. We recycle and compost. If you plan on cooking, please let me know when you book the room because it is a small kitchen and we may have to arrange a schedule so everyone can do their cooking. My wife tends to monopolize the kitchen if she is cooking (she was a professional chef and baker). Help us recycle and compost by asking what gets recycled and where the bin for paper is and where the bin for plastic, metal and glass is. All recycle has to be clean of food.

I had a very pleasant stay at Jim's place! The house is very close to Amherst city center and also perfectly located if you want to go to UMass. His house is very nice and the rooms big you can have your privacy if you want. I really recommend his place! Jim is also very friendly and easy to communicate! Enjoy your stay! :-)

In a way I hate to tell you how much I enjoyed my stay, I would rather have my pick of return dates! But seriously, a comfortable setting, quiet and seemingly secluded, and only five minutes from the UMass campus. Gracious hosts, a spacious room, a desk upon which to write, could not ask for more.

House provided modern, quiet accommodations on a leafy street just a few blocks from the center of town. The plush queen under the eaves was an oasis upstairs, above any of the hosts quiet activity below.

It's 5 minutes on foot to downtown Amherst & the Emily Dickinson museum. Bike trails everywhere allow you to explore widely. There are 2 rooms for rent here, so it would be great for families. And Jim is not just friendly and good conversation, he's warm and generous to boot.

Perfect location for anything at Amherst College or in the town. Comfortable accommodations and available but unobtrusive host, James. Highly recommended.

James User ProfileJames is a superhost.

I am married and semi-retired. My wife, Eunice, is a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center and on the faculty of Boston University. She lives in Boston and visits Amherst mostly on weekends and sometimes brings her cat Fred. I had a 30-yr career in video production specializing in medical and science programs and documentaries. I worked as an engineer, editor, scriptwriter and director. I returned to university working for and studying with the world-renowned evolutionist and visionary Lynn Margulis for the decade before her death. I am now working on her digital archive at ScholarWorks at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library at UMass-Amherst. I do this archivist work in my home office. For recreation, I like to kayak, fish, hike, camp, ski and snowshoe. I raise a small flock of chickens. I have a Master's of Science in Geography with an interest in environmental evolution. I am a contributor on the Precambrian to the Big History book, The Biggest Picture - From the Big Bang to the Development of the Big Bang Theory. I am the webmaster for the Environmental Evolution website. I am also a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London.
