‘The Bowgie’ is a converted 19th century barn (bowgie means cowshed in Cornish). Semi-detached from our own cottage. Set in open countryside with far-reaching views. Somewhere to escape and reconnect! Two miles north of Constantine in west Cornwall, midway between Falmouth and Helston, we are ideally placed for exploring some of the most picturesque parts of Cornwall.

The space
A cosy self-contained cottage, semi-detached from our own house with its own front door entrance. We have lovingly restored the property over the last few years. About 1 mile from the main Falmouth-Helston road, it is perfectly situated for exploring The Lizard peninsula's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Falmouth, and mid-Cornwall. For example, the ancient market town of Helston is only a 10 minute drive away, the port of Falmouth is 15 minutes away, and the university campus at Penryn is about 8 minutes away.

The local village, Constantine, is well-served with an off license, a Spar shop for all your grocery needs, and a doctor's surgery. Within a short drive are Trengilly Whartha Inn, Potager Garden and Cafe, and The Black Swan pub at Gweek - all highly recommended. Many well known tourist attractions are a short drive away e.g. Flambards, Trebah Garden, National Maritime Museum.

The front door leads into a good sized lobby/cloakroom with ample space for coats, boots etc, and adjacent door to w.c. with shower. A stone archway leads into the main living area. This is a light and airy, open plan space, which comprises a small kitchen area and breakfast bar, and a lounge with a comfy sofa, wood burning stove, and TV. A doorway leads into the double bedroom which has dual aspect views.

Tea, coffee, a fresh pint of milk, and Cornish cream tea are provided for your arrival.

Wood-fired hot tub: a Japanese style ‘ofuro’ two person tub. A gorgeous way to spend a few hours, by daylight or under the stars. You’ll need to light the stove then expect to allow 3-4 hours for the water to get up to usable temperature on first use (it will be quicker on subsequent uses). You’ll need to be around to tend the stove and stir the water every half hour or so during this heat-up period. Full instructions provided on arrival.

Two baskets of wood fuel are included in the booking price. If you need more you can purchase from us (please see 'House Manual' for more information).

There is a small outdoor table and chairs adjacent to the hot tub - a nice spot to relax with a view over the fields and south facing. Also the seat shown in the picture is a nice place to sit out front on a sunny morning with views over the fields, in summer listening to the swallows and skylarks. There is a charcoal BBQ available for use.

The setting is very rural - fields in permanent pasture on all sides, often with cows April-September. Our nearest neighbours are about a quarter of a mile away. Wildlife lovers will appreciate the biodiversity that can be seen and heard. We are relatively high up by Cornwall standards..about 180 m above sea level. The views are far reaching. Please note this means narrow Cornish lanes to get here for the last mile of your journey, and once you're here you will need a car to get anywhere.

'The Bowgie' would suit one person or a couple. An excellent base to explore mid and west Cornwall on day trips. You could equally use this space to reflect, read a book, do some work in peace and quiet, or just find some rural seclusion.

By prior arrangement we can provide a travel cot for a baby, although you will need to bring suitable cot sheets etc (please message us first).

Please note there is no washing machine. However, for a small fee we are happy to do a washing load and tumble dry.

Please see 'House Manual' for local recommendations, numbers for local taxi companies etc.

Sorry, we do not allow dogs.

Guest access
Off-road parking for one car or short wheelbase van. An additional car or trailer etc may be possible by prior arrangement, please message us to discuss before booking.

Other things to note
TV with DVD player and Netflix. A selection of board games. Wi-fi.

The setting is very rural. Fields on all sides, our nearest neighbours are cows!

We have two cats, you'll see them around about, but we don't encourage guests to allow them into the cottage (in case of allergies).

I grew up in west Cornwall, messing about in boats on the Helford River. Having moved away in 1989, initially to go to uni and then for work, I jumped at the chance to move back to Cornwall in 2006. I work at the nearby university campus in Penryn. I like a project, and in 2014 I bought a near derelict house called 'Goldstep' near Constantine, and set about the mammoth task of renovating it. I completed this in 2018, and began letting out 'The Bowgie at Goldstep'. When I'm not studying ecology or building things, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing veg, cooking, gig rowing, cycling, travelling and exploring.

During your stay
We like to greet guests on arrival, but if we can't be around for whatever reason we'll leave a key in a safe box and tell you the access code.

We live next-door in the main house (Goldstep). You're likely to see us around during the daytime, and we're on hand to help if you need anything. The area of the garden where the hot tub is located isn't visible from the main house, and we don't walk past this area after dark so you can be assured of privacy when bathing.
