We now have three rooms in a charming house 10 minutes by bus from Avenida de las Americas...gardens, fountain, fire circle....relaxing and safe stay in the country but just minutes from downtown. Breakfast is included but also dinner is available.

The space

This house and the village of San Jose de Balzay is very special, sitting above the busy area called "gringolandia." So close to everything and yet tranquil and quiet. A true paradise for your Cuenca stay!

Guest access

One of the great features is having a gringo for a host, and I can serve as a guide if you want for travels to Banos and the beach (I know a very special place on the beach, off the grid for most tourists).

Interaction with guests

I am full time available as your chef, local guide, information goldmine.

Other things to note

As a professional chef for 25 years, I offer my guests an extraordinary dining experience, with only a $8 daily fee for breakfast and dinner! Impossible to find this kind of deal anywhere else!

He was friendly at first but never apologetic for the confusing directions to the place. First I was given a dark room with no window and flimsy and unsafe door to the room. The closest bathroom was filthy with no hot water and a full garbage that needed to be emptied. The 2nd day I was transferred to another room with a window. The entrance was directly from the porch. I felt unsafe because abybody could have climbed through the fence and get into the room by forcing the flimsy door. When I found no toilet paper in the bathrooms, I knew I had to leave

Response from Louis:
I have had many guests stay with me and I have never had such complaints. My sense is that Alfredo has some serious personal problems, beyond being a very bad alcoholic. It was embarrassing for me and my housemates having him come home in the middle of the night, very drunk and vomiting.

Good bus service, friendly neighbourhood, comfortable room and wait till you see their "farm".

Being out of town for 5 days was very relaxing. I came out here because I was in a new home without internet, and needed to communicate with family for a few days. I was fortunate to find new friends in the process. I ate with the family several times, and had a wonderful couple sharing the house with me. The room was huge, and had an ensuite. A large living room downstairs is set up for relaxation and sharing stories. Louis brought breakfast food early each morning, so I could eat when I wanted to. My view out the bedroom window was of life in a small community, with beautiful mountains surrounding the village.

Alison and I felt very welcomed at Louis's Casa. Between the home grown vegetables, his wonderful creations at breakfast ( you can have lunch and dinner with wine or drinks for an extra $. Which is very very responsible, he is a very good cook). Bed was very comfortable and again the host Louis is great. He took us on a tour to the farmers market. Over all a great time.

writer, gardener, chef, now retired and living in Cuenca, Ecuador. It has always been my dream in my retirement to run a small B&B. I love to cook, socialize, and share my love for Ecuador and the Latin culture. I can teach my guests many things about living simply but still with comfort and elegance. Imagine sitting around a bonfire in the evening, hearing the sounds of nature, enjoying lively discussions....that's what I offer in addition to a room and breakfast!
