The Old Schoolhouse is a period property lying high above the southern shores of Loch Ness. It is a perfect base for exploring the Scottish Highlands. Loch Ness, Inverness and Moray Firth, the Nevis range and Cairngorms National Park are all within easy reach, whilst the beautiful west coast and the Isle of Skye lie only two hours’ drive away. Or stay put and enjoy views of Loch Mhor and Monadhliath Mountains from the house and garden, or read a book by the wood-burner in the cosy living room.

The space
Built in 1878, and a teacher’s house for over 100 years, the Old Schoolhouse has been simply and tastefully renovated, retaining much of its original character and features. It is warm and cosy with a log burner and central heating and boasts views of Loch Mhor (2 min walk from the house) and the Monadhliath Mountains.

The house adjoins the Old School which is home to the owners. We run an organic small-holding (where we grow vegetables and keep chickens) and often have garden produce to share with guests.

The property is very comfortable and homely with a well-equipped kitchen, a bath (with shower over), a master-bedroom with views of the loch and a twin room (which can be made up into a super-king size bed). We are very family-friendly and can offer the use of a cot and highchair.

A garden at the front of the property is for sole use of guests, while the rear garden is shared by guests and owners alike, so please take this into consideration.

The area is rich in history (from hut circles and cairns, to battlefields and castles) and in wildlife (pine-marten, deer, red squirrels, osprey, white tailed and golden eagle, Slavonian grebes and divers). With miles of tracks, quiet roads and forest, or the open solitude of loch, hill and moor, there is plenty of scope for fishing, cycling or walking straight from the house.

Local fishing trips and art lessons can be arranged on request.

Guest access
Guests have sole use of the house and the private front garden. However, the house backs onto our organic small-holding. Guests are welcome to use the back garden, but please note that it is shared with the owners.

There is a private parking space for guest use at the bottom of the garden, with a path sloping up to the house (which has some steps up to the door), so please be aware that it may not be suitable for those who require disabled access. However, guests are more than welcome to use our driveway on arrival to off-load luggage etc.

Other things to note
Please note that, although we have WI-FI, the house has no television and limited mobile signal. We think this makes it a great retreat!

We are a 35 min drive from the nearest large town (Inverness) so please stock up with food before you arrive, as it’s a long way to drive back if you forget milk!

With a short uphill path from the parking space to the house, steps up to the front door and bedrooms upstairs, the Old School may not be suitable for those who require disabled access. However, please do get in touch if you have any enquiries.

We also try to be as environmentally friendly as we can, so all cleaning products used in the house are biodegradable and we encourage recycling and composting.
